Teacher - Miss Sewell (Monday to Wednesday); Mrs Allan (Thursday and Friday)
Gym days - Term 2 to be confirmed
Outdoor Learning - Monday and Friday
In literacy, we are focusing on frequently volunteering to read aloud with good pace, expression and fluency and practising pausing at punctuation when reading aloud. We are continuing to contribute to class discussions about information we have read using evidence to support our opinions, thoughts and feelings. We will then use this evidence to form a written response to literal and inferential questions relating to our Bugclub text The Road to Freedom.
In writing, we will increase our awareness of newspaper reports and the underlying features of a successful newspaper report. We will then create our own factual report writing in third-person narrative whilst continuing to up-skill our vocabulary and punctuation.
This term Miss Sewell and Mrs Blair will be organising an after-school drama club to reenact a WW2 play 'Bombs and Blackberries' by Julia Donaldson.
In numeracy we will be continuing to develop our addition and subtraction strategies using mental and written methods. We will also use a concrete, pictorial and abstract method to revise multiplication facts before exploring the grid method of multiplying to multiply by 2-digit numbers as well as the bar method to divide larger numbers equally or to leave a remainder.
In maths, we are learning to: measure lengths accurately using metric and imperial units of measure. We are learning to convert between different units of measure by applying our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.
This term we will continue to explore the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Having explored our own rights and responsibilities, we will now look at the rights of those in other times, using The Road to Freedom text and a class novel, Once, as a context.
We will continue to prepare for changes in our own life through a transition week at Stirling High School (w.b. 17th November). We will access the high school learning environment, meet new staff and immerse ourselves into subjects on offer at Stirling High.
P7 will also undertake visits to both Bannockburn High and Stirling High as they begin formal transition events to secondary school.
In P.E. our focus will be racket sports, particularly badminton. We will: learn how to hold the racket with forehand and backhand grips; improve our accuracy when hitting a shuttlecock; learn to keep score and improve our aim within the court.
This term we will be exploring the substances that make up Earth’s surface, before comparing some of their characteristics and uses. We will analyse samples of rocks, soil and minerals and report on their characteristics and uses, using a range of media.
Over the past few weeks the class have been preparing for P7 leadership interviews. They looked at the skills and qualities needed for each specific role and and using this knowledge they began to identify and evidence their own personal skills and qualities. They mindmapped ideas ready for their interview with the DHT or HT. Some have had their interview already with others patiently waiting for their opportunity to say why they would make a good house captain, head pupil or sports leader.
In Literacy, P7 have continued working towards their reading targets. Everyone can include direct evidence from the text in their written responses to questions about a text they have read and are able to clarify the meaning of unknown vocabulary they encounter.
The class have also looked at the skill of 'visualisation', where they read an extract from Goodnight Mr Tom and drew what the author was describing. This allowed us to apply some of the art skills we have been learning and it was fun to see how people visualised the same extract differently.
In Numeracy, P7 have consolidated their ability to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000, 100,000 and beyond. Now we have a good understanding of place value, we will apply this knowledge when looking at mental and written addition and subtraction strategies. We will look at jump and split strategies to aid mental calculations before demonstrating correctly laid out formal written strategies.
In Beyond Number, we have continued to explore the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, using our knowledge to construct 3D objects from their nets.
Alongside our class novel, "Goodnight Mr Tom", we have been learning more about WW2. P7 looked at why the war started and how allied and axis groupings of countries developed.
On the home front, we explored the experiences of those children who were evacuated, just like our novel's main character Willie Beech. We also discovered why rationing was introduced and some of the foods that were included. Miss Sewell showed us the amount of sweets we would have been entitled to and it wasn't even enough for our whole class to get one each!
P7 started off this term learning about their rights as children in Scotland. They chose five rights that impact their daily lives at Borestone before ranking the five they chose in order of importance. Using these five rights P7 considered the responsibilities of the Rights Holder (learners) and the Duty Bearers (staff) in ensuring everyone has their rights respected. Once P7 have practised implementing these responsibilities, P7, and staff working in our classroom, will then sign their name on a t-shirt displayed in our class to show we are in mutual agreement. This will be displayed all year in our class.
In literacy, we are focusing on reading aloud with good pace, expression and fluency. We are beginning to contribute to class discussions about information we have read using evidence to support our opinions, thoughts and feelings. We have started using evidence from the text to form a written response to literal and inferential questions relating to our class novel 'Goodnight Mister Tom'.
In numeracy we will be extending the range of whole numbers we can work with by explaining the link between a digit, its place and its value. Using the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach we will learn to represent, expand, write and describe numbers with an increasing number of digits.
This term, we are looking at the 7 visual elements in art. So far, we have covered colour, line and space. We are enjoying completing different tasks to demonstrate our new skills and techniques.
We have started looking at identifying France on a map as well as other French speaking countries. We know the benefits of learning French and are now ready to start building our vocabulary through games and songs - with a focus on numbers.
We have been developing our team work and communication skills during P.E, participating in some good- natured games of rounders with P7B. We will also begin preparing for the upcoming cross country event. Through time trials, games and relays, P7 will develop their fitness and stamina whilst recording improvements to their pace and time. This will stand us in good stead for standing on the start line on 6th October!

In writing, we will use our knowledge from our IDL topic and our class novel to write a personal, informal letter taking on the role of an evacuee during WW2. We will include a variety of punctuation and subject-specific vocabulary to up-skill our writing.

This term we will be looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We will start to explore the rights pupils have and what their duties are to ensure everyone has access to their rights. This will form our P7S/A class charter.
We will develop our understanding of our own personal strengths and attributes when applying for a leadership role and continue buddying our primary one buddies throughout this term too.
This term we will be looking at World War II, with a strong focus on what life for a child was like during war years.
The topic links closely with our novel, "Goodnight Mr Tom" by Michelle Magorian.
