Teacher - Miss McNaughton
Gym days - Tuesday
Outdoor Learning - Wednesday Afternoon
Primary 1 have settled in so well this term. We now know our daily routine, which we go over each morning with Miss McNaughton, and we enjoy reading stories and creating music with egg shakers. Our confidence and independence have already grown so much, and we are learning to try new things every day.
We have loved exploring the classroom and all the toys we can play with. Some of our favourite activities are drawing at the creating station, playing with the construction, pretending to play restaurants and taking everyone's orders!
This September, Primary 1M have made great progress in learning their initial sounds. We’ve been working on recognising, saying, and writing these sounds with growing confidence and independence.
The children have also started blending sounds together to read simple words and even short sentences!
In writing, they are using their sound knowledge to create basic sentences. We are focusing on forming letters correctly, leaving spaces between words, sounding out words carefully, and using full stops to mark the end of a sentence.
In Numeracy, we have been working on our numbers from 1 to 5. We began by identifying the correct number for each amount, practising number formation, and subitising numbers to 5 using dot patterns, Numicon, five frames, and dominoes – which we now love playing with on the carpet!
Next, we started practising our number bonds to 5 and using this knowledge to help us add two numbers within 5. We have also been learning to use mathematical language such as “more than,” “less than,” “bigger,” and “smaller” to deepen our understanding of the size and value of numbers.
This term in Topic, we have been learning all about the jungle. Primary 1 have absolutely loved this theme and all the activities we have explored. We began by reading "Giraffes Can’t Dance", the story of Gerald the giraffe who learns to dance in his own way. We discussed the key themes of the story, such as never giving up, being kind and brave, staying true to ourselves, and understanding that it is okay to do things differently from others.
From there, we explored the different jungle animals in the book. We investigated and discovered many more jungle creatures – learning about where they live, what they eat, the sounds they make, and how they use camouflage.
One of our favourite activities was creating our own jungle landscapes using resources from the garden, such as leaves and acorns!

Primary 1M have had a very busy November!
We have been practising for our school nativity, learning our lines, and rehearsing the songs and actions. We’ve also been working hard learning all of our new sound and using our robot arms and blending hands to help us blend words.
We love being creative when drawing and building towers and castles in our constuction area! We are all very excited to perform our nativity!
We have now learned all of our initial sounds and continue to practise them every day. We have begun exploring digraphs—special friends where two letters come together to make one sound. The children have been practising reading sentences that include the digraphs and sounds we have covered in class.
In writing, we have been creating our own Gingerbread Man storybooks. We enjoyed reading the story together and watching a short film version. We have been focusing on using sequencing words such as first, then, and next, and on adding exclamation marks to our writing.
In numeracy, we have been learning numbers to 10, recognising numerals to 10, and counting forwards and backwards. We have been practising our number bonds to 10, which has helped us when adding and subtracting.
We have also been learning about the days of the week, the months of the year, and the seasons. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and sequenced what he ate on each day of the week! We then created some seasonal artwork with paint, thinking about the colours we see in all four seasons.
