Teacher - Miss Storrie & Miss Ferguson
Gym days - Fridays
Outdoor Learning - Thursday afternoon (Miss Beech)
For reading comprehension, we are continuing to explore our Bug Club text on the Titanic. We will be particularly focusing on clarifying tricky words or phrases, and taking part in whole class/small group discussions about the text. This will help us to develop thoughtful, detailed answers to a range of questions. We will then be exploring the novel "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" by Louis Sachar, investigating key themes, characters and the style of writing. We will also be developing our predicting and summarising skills.
For writing, we are learning how to structure, plan and develop our own piece of persuasive writing. We will also be investigating some procedural writing linked to our topic e.g., writing recipes.
For listening and talking, we will be engaging in lots of whole class/group discussions about the texts we are exploring. We will also be working in teams to create our own product in relation to our topic.
Our numeracy focus this term is multiplication, division, estimation and rounding. We have began learning about these concepts and will be using a variety of different materials such as textbook work, digital technologies and concrete materials to support our learning.
We will be learning about money for beyond number this term. We will also be utilising our knowledge and understanding of this within our topic context through related budgeting activities.
We will also be continuing to develop our problem solving skills through our engagement with a range of 'Exploring and Noticing' activities.
Our health and wellbeing focus this term is food and health. We have discussed what a balanced diet looks like, and will be exploring this further through our topic context!
Additionally, we will be learning about food in terms of culture, tradition and sustainability. We will have the opportunity to engage in a lot of 'hands on' activities this term, preparing and working with food, whilst ensuring we are practicing good hygiene and following safety procedures.
Our learning context this term is 'The Great P6 Bake-Off'! We will be exploring food and fashion, particularly looking at healthy foods and sustainable clothing.
We will be working in small groups over the next 8 weeks to plan and create/design our own food dish or piece of clothing which shows sustainability.
Throughout the topic, we will also be learning about the meaning of food miles and how we can be more sustainable.
At the end of the topic, we will be hosting 'The Great P6 Bake-Off', where the children will present their final project.
Our Class Charter
P6 started off term 1 by creating our class charter together. We discussed the rights which we are entitled to as children in Scotland, and picked out 5 rights which we felt were best suited to our classroom.
After we had chosen our 5 rights, we discussed the different responsibilities we have in order to ensure that each of these rights can be met at school. We then collated all of this information in order to produce our class charter display which will remain in our classroom for the duration of the school year.
Literacy
The children have made great progress with their reading comprehension this term and are enjoying engaging with our bug club texts and activities.
For writing, we have been exploring a fiction piece of writing which focuses on setting. We created a story map as a whole class, and used this to help deepen our understanding of the text, leading to us being able to confidently write our own warning stories with a focus on setting.
We have just begun our new writing topic, which focuses on persuasive writing!
Numeracy
We have focused on number and number processes this month. The children have consolidated their knowledge of place value and have been investigating various different strategies for addition and subtraction.
In beyond number, the children have been investigating shape with Miss Ferguson. They have engaged in various practical lessons and have worked to create their own shapes.
Health and Wellbeing
The children have been learning about lots of things in HWB this term.
We have been looking at emotions and have spoken about who we can talk to and who can help us if we need it.
Additionally, we have discussed the unique skills and abilities each of us brings to our classroom. We worked to prepare and then present a short talk about ourselves to the rest of the class.
The children did really well with this and enjoyed sharing their skills with their peers!
I.D.L
Our topic focus is the Tudors and Stuarts this term. The children have been enjoying learning about all of the different Kings and Queens, as well as the events which occurred during this period.
We have engaged in various activities to show our learning.
We have made posters, created portraits, made presentations using digital technologies, as well as taking part in role play scenarios.
For reading comprehension this term, we will be focusing on a Bug Club text related to our topic. We will explore this text as a whole class, completing a range of activities to deepen our understanding of the text.
For writing this term, we are using the 'Talk For Writing' approach. We have been exploring the structure and contents of a fiction model text, and are learning how to create our own piece of writing.
We will also be developing our listening and talking skills this term throughout whole class/group discussions. We will also be creating and delivering our own presentations related to an aspect of our topic.
Our numeracy focus this term is place value, addition and subtraction. We will be learning and extending our knowledge of these concepts through the use of a variety of materials such as textbooks, tuff tray activities, concrete materials as well as digital technologies.
For beyond number this term, we will be exploring shape and data analysis. We will make links to our topic, analysing data from significant events such as the population before and after the Great Plague of London.
For health and wellbeing this term, our focus is on mental, social, emotional and physical wellbeing. We have had class discussions surrounding our rights and responsibilities, and have used these to create our class charter together.
We will also be learning about the different ways we can manage and cope with our emotions, as well as who we can talk to/who can help us.
Our learning context for this term is the Tudors and Stuarts. We will be exploring the lives and backgrounds of different people during the Tudor and Stuart periods, with a main focus on influential Kings and Queens such as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots.
We will be exploring what life was like during the Tudor and Stuart periods (the differences between the rich and poor), and will learn about the way in which this period of history has shaped Scotland today.
We will also be exploring our topic through literacy this term as we discuss a text related to the recovery of King Richard III's body.
