Teacher - Miss Johnstone(class teacher) Miss Beech (RCCT cover)
Gym days - Wednesday and Thursday
Outdoor Learning - Monday pm and Tuesday am
In Literacy, we have been studying our class novel 'Wonder' by RJ Palacio in more detail. We have been focusing on the characters and the themes, and we even created our own precepts(rules to live by) just like Mr Browne in the story. The next step will be to watch the film adaption and compare and contrast the similarities and the differences of the book vs movie. In writing, we have been looking at Dr Seuss's Christmas story, 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas''. We looked at the steps and the features of the story before beginning to create our own versions. Once we have completed these, we will edit them and type them up to be printed off in time to take home with us at Christmas.
In Numeracy, we have been working on decimals/decimal fractions and how to recognise and compare these. We have also been recaping our 6 and 7 times tables, by making '6,7' monsters. Our monsters had to have features that equalled to amounts in the 6 or 7 times tables e.g. 42 eyes or 7 legs. In beyond number, we have started looking at lines of symmetry and have created festive themed pictures to show our understanding of this.
Our topic this term has been linked to the 'Bake Off' where we have focused on sustainable, fairtrade items that make our world a better place. As part of this, we have worked on our food health/tech skills, by creating a healthy dish from around the world. We made tomato salsa, mango chutney and vegetable wraps. We especially enjoyed the tasting part! We then had to write up our recipes and discuss what made them healthy and sustainable.
We have enjoyed our RME topic so far- 'Light and Hope'. We discussed how all over the world, at this time of year when its at its darkest, people celebrate the symbolism of light, and the hope that it brings. We have begun learning about all of these celebrations such as the Nativity and Diwali. We also create our own light of hope and created an imaginary short story of how it had helped someone at this time of year.
In Literacy this term, we are continuing with our Bug Club Reading comprehension. We are particularly focussing on identifying unfamiliar words and phrases to clarify the meaning as well as asking and answering thoughtful questions about a text to show the depth of our understanding. Furthermore, we have been reading Wonder by RJ Palacio as our class novel, and this term we will be studying the novel more closely focussing on, characters, themes and author style. We will also be continuing to work through our Nelson Grammar Textbooks focussing on sentences, verbs, pronouns and punctuation. In writing, we will be working on Adventure stories for Halloween and Christmas, a suspense story linked to Bonfire Night as well as some procedural writing (recipes) linked to our new topic. We will also have a focus of refective writing looking at the theme of kindness linking to Wonder.
In Numeracy this term, we will be focussing on Decimals and Fractions and their connections. Furthermore we will be continuing to work on our written sum methods for addition and subtraction as well as a short recap on multiplying and dividing. For beyond number, we will be recapping Money from last term particualrly budgeting, and also Lines of Symmetry and Map Scales. We have already been enjoying lots of hands on tasks for this. We will also do Problem Solving on a Monday working on our mental maths recall and teamwork.
Our health and wellbeing this term is focussed on heathly eating and food tech. We have linked this in to our IDL topic. We will be working on exploring food in terms of tradition culture and sustainibility. We will also have the opportunity to work with food directly cooking and baking healthy dishes whilst also ensuring we are carrying out the correct hygeine and safety procedures.
Our learning context this term is The P6/5 Bake Off! Over the next 8 weeks we will be exploring healthy foods and sustainable textiles/fashion. We will be working in teams to create a project (a healthy dish or piece of clothing) which reflects themes such as sustainibilty and creativity. We will be looking closely at food miles and fair trade, as well as upcycling materials. The idea is we want to create something fit for a better world. At the end of the topic, we will be having our Bake Off Expo, where we will showcase all of our learning from this term.
In Literacy, we have already worked our way through 2 bug club texts and have enjoyed being able to delve deeper in to a story to discover knowledge and meanings. We have also looked at our Talk for Writing programme and used a model text to innovate a story and re write it based on our own ideas- we had so many fantastic stories produced!
In Numeracy, we have been working on place value and addition and subtraction, refreshing our knowledge of these concepts and challenging ourselves to up level our learning. We have enjoyed taking part in both mental, written and active learning activities. One of our groups particualry enjoyed making place value animals out of dienes blocks. In beyond number, we have been looking at measurement and have enjoyed linking this in with our topic to create some decades themed problems such as how big was a 1960s Tv compared to now!
We have really been enjoying outdoor learning this term. We do this on Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings, using the school grounds and surrounding wooded areas as our classroom. We have been learning some key skills such as mapping, leaf identification and knot tying. We have been loving the freedom and calmness of the outdoor class.
This term we have been working on our Through the Decades Topic. We have covered the 40s, the 60s, the 80s, 90s and 2010s-20s. We have really enjoyed learning about how different life was in these eras and have emmersed ourselves in the technologies, fashion and music. We have even had some special visitors who have come in to tell us what their childhood was like growing up in one of these decades. We enjoyed meeting Jeannie how told us all about what it was like to grow up in the 190s.
In Literacy this term, we are working on a variety of things. For reading comprehension, we have began working our way thorugh daily Bug Club activties which enhances our understanding of a text. We also have the opportunity to read with our group 3 times a week as well as further opportunities to read independently. For writing, we have linked this to our Decades topic so far and have had some practise writing newspaper articles, diary entries and letters. We will also have a focussed Talk for Writing Unit where we will use a model text to help us generate new ideas of our own. For listening and talking, we will be carrying out class presentations around our favourite decades as well as presenting our learning this term in our class assembly.
In Numeracy this term, we will be focussing on Place Value, Estimating and Rounding, Addition and Multiplication. For beyond number, our focus this term is money, measurement and some data analysis. We have been enjoying linking some of these topics to our Decades learning context so far. We will use a range of activities such as textbook work, learning through play, digital technologies, visuals and concrete materials to help us learn.
Our health and wellbeing this term is all around our school values and focussing on creating the best version of ourselves. We have had lots of discussion around our class charter, our emotions and our peer relationships. We will also be discussing our skills for life and work and creating our own termly learning targets.
Our learning context this term is Journey Through the Decades. We will be focussing on our historical skills learning about how people lived in the past and making comparisons with the current world. We will be specifically learning about the 40s, 60s ,80s,90s and 2010s, with special opportunities for visitors(such as Mrs Dawson!) popping in to tell us about their 'era'. We will also be making links to literacy and numeracy by reading a 1940s WW2 based class novel, and by using money and measurements in a '1980s' comparasion context. We will also be collating all of our learning together to create our class assembly at the end of term.
