This term, we will be developing our debating skills. So far we have been introduced to the vocabulary and stages of a debate. We have focussed on writing a strong argument using the P.E.E structure and we have discussed how to use tone and clarity to make our speech more persuasive. We will continue to work in teams to create arguments for and against a 'motion' to further develop these skills.
In writing, we are focussing on a range of genres. Starting off with Setting Writing, we will be using descriptiona nd dialogue to wrire a piece about an Ancient Civilisation linking to our topic. Further on in the term, we will also be using our new class novel 'Atticus and the Ancient Greeks' to model and write our own book reviews.
This term in numeracy, we will be revisiting and revising all our mathematical concepts from the year. We will be refining our strategies and ensuring we fill in any gaps in our learning. We will be applying the ' I do, we do, you do' structure to our week.
We will also be covering multiples and factors as well as percentages.
These skills will be developed through a range of textbook activities, gamess, digital technologies and active numeracy stations.
In beyond number, our focus this is on Angles. We have already begun to discover the different types of angles and we will soon be moving on to measuring and drawing them. Following this we will be looking at compass directions and coordinates which will link nicely to our Ancient civilisations map for our topic.
This term, our focus in health and wellbeing is RSHP.
This is a Scottish government inititive to ensure all children are aware of the safety and hygeine around about their bodies as well as covering some elements of emotional wellbeing. This is split into P5 lessons and P6s lessons, so the whole class will recieve the P5 input and then the 5s will be given an alternative activity whilst the 6s recieve their further input.

This term, our topic is the Ancient World. P6/5 had expressed an interest in learning more about this part of history. We have already begun exploring maps of the world during the ancient age and finding out what made a civilisation.
We will be exploring Ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome and the Maya/Aztecs.
As part of our topic work, we will have a variety of learning experiences within art, drama, literacy and social studies.
This month we finished off our focus on Scottish texts. We looked specifically at Scottish songs, focusing on the meaning of the lyrics and the emotion/mood they created. We explored popular songs like Flower of Scotland and Caledonia. We found out that Loch Lomond was actually about a Jacobite soldier who had to leave his loved ones. We recognised the mood had a sad nostalgic feeling and we reminisced about how we would feel to leave our familys. We all looked at word choice like 'bonnie banks' and discussed techniques like adjectives and alliteration.
This month we have been working on Decimals and Fractions. We have focussed on what they look like in all their different forms and also how to convert between them. We can now compare their size using symbols like < and > and order them on a number line. We have also began to find fractions of amoutns by dividing by the bottom number and multiplying by the top.
In beyond number, we enjoyed looking at patterns and relationships using out problem solving skills to work out the next number in a sequence. We have also been having lots of discussions in mental maths regarding our startegies and trying to improve our scores.
Our recent new topic, following our Scotland one, has been all about Game Design As .learners we have become part of a game development studio and work collaboratively to design, build, test and launch their own digital game. Across five weeks, pupils follow the technology design process, moving from initial ideas and planning through to coding, testing and improving a final product. We have used online resources like Scratch and Chrome Music Lab to help us with our games.
This term, we will be developing our reading skills through a range of Scots texts, including Selkie Girl and texts about Burns Night traditions, as well as Bug Club texts. We are learning to clarify the meaning of tricky words and to answer questions about a text by skimming and scanning for key details.
In writing, we are using the Talk for Writing approach to explore the structure of Robert Burns’ 'Address to a Haggis' poem and 'To a Mouse'. We have begun producing our own poems using this structure and have successfully completed our own “Address to a…” stanza. Our focus is on directly addressing the object, using exaggeration, and including Scots vocabulary.
For listening and talking, we have been practising our Scots poem 'To a Mouse' by Robert Burns.
This term in numeracy, we have been developing our understanding of number by exploring decimals and fractions.
We will also be recapping and enhancing our multiplication and division strategies by focusing on things like repeated addtion and multiplying by 10 and 100.
These skills will be developed through a range of textbook activities, games such as fraction dominoes, digital technologies and active numeracy stations.
In beyond number, our focus this is on 3D shapes and time. We will be drawing circles using compasses as well as created 3D skeletons. This will help us apply our numeracy skills to everyday situations and build confidence in using time in the real world.
This term, our focus in health and wellbeing is on substance misuse.
We are learning about alcohol laws in Scotland and what it means to drink responsibly. We have been investigating how alcohol affects the human body and discussing the reasons why there are age limits for drinking and buying alcohol.
We will also be learning about other substances, such as cigarettes, exploring how smoking can affect different parts of the body and learning about the laws surrounding smoking in Scotland.
This term, our topic is Scotland. We are learning about Scotland’s eras, how they have changed over time From Ancient Skara Brae to Modern Day inventions we will focus on Scotlands Journey.
We will also be exploring maps of Scotland, working to locate key features and directions.
As part of our topic work, we have been learning about Robert Burns and expressing our learning through a range of creative activities. These include using different art styles to create Burns To a Mouse art, designing pointillism showing the field and cottage.
As part of our last week we will be challenging ourselves to take part in the "malted milk biscuit house challenge" . In groups we are tasked with constructing mini houses using malted milk biscuits, icing, and various decorations. The challenge often emphasizes engineering skills (STEM) to design a stable structure.
We also get to deconstruct it at the end by eating it- yummy!!
P6/5 are going to be learning how to become an elf through our elf training academy program. We will have to work in teams at different activities to learn all the skills needed to be an elf. These will include, wrapping presents, solving puzzles, designing a toy and reindeer fitness activities.
In pairs we will be designing a stall for the Edinburgh Christmas markets.
First we will create a product(bookmark, paper ornament, poster, card)
Then we will Price it
Design an advertisement
And finally -Pitch it to the class
In Literacy, we have been studying our class novel 'Wonder' by RJ Palacio in more detail. We have been focusing on the characters and the themes, and we even created our own precepts(rules to live by) just like Mr Browne in the story. The next step will be to watch the film adaption and compare and contrast the similarities and the differences of the book vs movie. In writing, we have been looking at Dr Seuss's Christmas story, 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas''. We looked at the steps and the features of the story before beginning to create our own versions. Once we have completed these, we will edit them and type them up to be printed off in time to take home with us at Christmas.
In Numeracy, we have been working on decimals/decimal fractions and how to recognise and compare these. We have also been recaping our 6 and 7 times tables, by making '6,7' monsters. Our monsters had to have features that equalled to amounts in the 6 or 7 times tables e.g. 42 eyes or 7 legs. In beyond number, we have started looking at lines of symmetry and have created festive themed pictures to show our understanding of this.
Our topic this term has been linked to the 'Bake Off' where we have focused on sustainable, fairtrade items that make our world a better place. As part of this, we have worked on our food health/tech skills, by creating a healthy dish from around the world. We made tomato salsa, mango chutney and vegetable wraps. We especially enjoyed the tasting part! We then had to write up our recipes and discuss what made them healthy and sustainable.
We have enjoyed our RME topic so far- 'Light and Hope'. We discussed how all over the world, at this time of year when its at its darkest, people celebrate the symbolism of light, and the hope that it brings. We have begun learning about all of these celebrations such as the Nativity and Diwali. We also create our own light of hope and created an imaginary short story of how it had helped someone at this time of year.
In Literacy this term, we are continuing with our Bug Club Reading comprehension. We are particularly focussing on identifying unfamiliar words and phrases to clarify the meaning as well as asking and answering thoughtful questions about a text to show the depth of our understanding. Furthermore, we have been reading Wonder by RJ Palacio as our class novel, and this term we will be studying the novel more closely focussing on, characters, themes and author style. We will also be continuing to work through our Nelson Grammar Textbooks focussing on sentences, verbs, pronouns and punctuation. In writing, we will be working on Adventure stories for Halloween and Christmas, a suspense story linked to Bonfire Night as well as some procedural writing (recipes) linked to our new topic. We will also have a focus of refective writing looking at the theme of kindness linking to Wonder.
In Numeracy this term, we will be focussing on Decimals and Fractions and their connections. Furthermore we will be continuing to work on our written sum methods for addition and subtraction as well as a short recap on multiplying and dividing. For beyond number, we will be recapping Money from last term particualrly budgeting, and also Lines of Symmetry and Map Scales. We have already been enjoying lots of hands on tasks for this. We will also do Problem Solving on a Monday working on our mental maths recall and teamwork.
Our health and wellbeing this term is focussed on heathly eating and food tech. We have linked this in to our IDL topic. We will be working on exploring food in terms of tradition culture and sustainibility. We will also have the opportunity to work with food directly cooking and baking healthy dishes whilst also ensuring we are carrying out the correct hygeine and safety procedures.
Our learning context this term is The P6/5 Bake Off! Over the next 8 weeks we will be exploring healthy foods and sustainable textiles/fashion. We will be working in teams to create a project (a healthy dish or piece of clothing) which reflects themes such as sustainibilty and creativity. We will be looking closely at food miles and fair trade, as well as upcycling materials. The idea is we want to create something fit for a better world. At the end of the topic, we will be having our Bake Off Expo, where we will showcase all of our learning from this term.
In Literacy, we have already worked our way through 2 bug club texts and have enjoyed being able to delve deeper in to a story to discover knowledge and meanings. We have also looked at our Talk for Writing programme and used a model text to innovate a story and re write it based on our own ideas- we had so many fantastic stories produced!
In Numeracy, we have been working on place value and addition and subtraction, refreshing our knowledge of these concepts and challenging ourselves to up level our learning. We have enjoyed taking part in both mental, written and active learning activities. One of our groups particualry enjoyed making place value animals out of dienes blocks. In beyond number, we have been looking at measurement and have enjoyed linking this in with our topic to create some decades themed problems such as how big was a 1960s Tv compared to now!
We have really been enjoying outdoor learning this term. We do this on Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings, using the school grounds and surrounding wooded areas as our classroom. We have been learning some key skills such as mapping, leaf identification and knot tying. We have been loving the freedom and calmness of the outdoor class.
This term we have been working on our Through the Decades Topic. We have covered the 40s, the 60s, the 80s, 90s and 2010s-20s. We have really enjoyed learning about how different life was in these eras and have emmersed ourselves in the technologies, fashion and music. We have even had some special visitors who have come in to tell us what their childhood was like growing up in one of these decades. We enjoyed meeting Jeannie how told us all about what it was like to grow up in the 190s.
In Literacy this term, we are working on a variety of things. For reading comprehension, we have began working our way thorugh daily Bug Club activties which enhances our understanding of a text. We also have the opportunity to read with our group 3 times a week as well as further opportunities to read independently. For writing, we have linked this to our Decades topic so far and have had some practise writing newspaper articles, diary entries and letters. We will also have a focussed Talk for Writing Unit where we will use a model text to help us generate new ideas of our own. For listening and talking, we will be carrying out class presentations around our favourite decades as well as presenting our learning this term in our class assembly.
In Numeracy this term, we will be focussing on Place Value, Estimating and Rounding, Addition and Multiplication. For beyond number, our focus this term is money, measurement and some data analysis. We have been enjoying linking some of these topics to our Decades learning context so far. We will use a range of activities such as textbook work, learning through play, digital technologies, visuals and concrete materials to help us learn.
Our health and wellbeing this term is all around our school values and focussing on creating the best version of ourselves. We have had lots of discussion around our class charter, our emotions and our peer relationships. We will also be discussing our skills for life and work and creating our own termly learning targets.
Our learning context this term is Journey Through the Decades. We will be focussing on our historical skills learning about how people lived in the past and making comparisons with the current world. We will be specifically learning about the 40s, 60s ,80s,90s and 2010s, with special opportunities for visitors(such as Mrs Dawson!) popping in to tell us about their 'era'. We will also be making links to literacy and numeracy by reading a 1940s WW2 based class novel, and by using money and measurements in a '1980s' comparasion context. We will also be collating all of our learning together to create our class assembly at the end of term.
