Teacher - Mr Kirk
PE Days - Monday and Wednesday
Outdoor Learning - Tuesday with Ms Westmorland
A happy new year to you all and all the best for 2026 from everyone in P4K. We hope you enjoy reading about some of our learning highlights from January.
In literacy, we have been working hard to further develop our expression and fluency in reading aloud groups as well as learning weekly spelling rules and developing our understanding of connective words. We are becoming more independent when reading for information and note-taking. Our next steps are to now use our own notes and turn them into summaries.
As part of our IDL topic for January – Scotland and Robert Burns – we have applied our note-taking skills to write notes on the life of Robert Burns both in our jotters and digitally on our Chromebooks to create a google slides presentation. We also learned to recite two Scottish poems – Mrs Nae Offence by Gregor Steele and Nae Fizz Izzie by Hamish MacDonald. On the day of our class recital competition, every learner who was present performed a recital to the whole class and a very well done to those who were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. We created pop art artworks of a Scottish thistle and of Robert Burns, sketched and shaded a Scottish loch landscape and also made a collage of a Scottish flag. To celebrate the diversity of Scotland following a class discussion, we decide to make one section of our flags multi-coloured. Please see below for some photographs of these learning tasks.
We will now focus our IDL topic learning on Scotland, facts about the country, its geography and cities, and the importance of Stirling before moving on to our next IDL topic – The Vikings!
In numeracy, we have been learning about measurement. We have learned to accurately measure using rulers to the nearest millimetre and have also practised changing lengths in centimetres to millimetres by multiplying by 10. Our next step is to measure in metres and convert between all units of measurement by multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 using decimal place value charts (linking to previous learning from our multiplication topic in Term 2). Following this, we will look at weighing and capacity conversions before learning about fractions. Here, we will link our learning on fractions to our previous Term 2 topic on written division strategies.
Finally, and posted just below some of our photographs of learning tasks, are our Term 3 learning targets.

P4K have continued to work hard, as they always do, throughout December so a very well done to each learner.
We were hugely successful in learning and performing our Christmas songs for our school show and we showed confidence on stage to our wonderful audiences. Well done to our readers who said their lines so expressively and confidently at every step of the way from practising their lines in class, to saying them aloud during rehearsals and then during the four shows!
In literacy, we completed our big club reading novel "King Kafu and the Moon" and used the final chapters to develop our note-taking and summarising skills. We will be practising these skills more in literacy and across other subjects in term 3. In writing, we revisited previous learning on the use of adjectives, similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia and use of direct speech in our ‘Winter Wonderland – describing the setting’ lessons.
In numeracy, we have learned about multiplying and dividing whole numbers by 10 and 100. We used place value charts to show that the digits move to the left when we multiply and to the right when we divide. Some learners were able to apply these skills to decimal numbers where we observed that adding on a 0 or two 0’s when multiplying by 10 and 100 doesn’t work for decimal numbers!
We have also been successful on some tricky art tasks which can be seen below. We applied our sketching and shading skills to draw a Christmas elf, and our pattern and positioning skills to create Christmas decorations with hama beads and Christmas cards. Even when our hama bead designs were not successful or were accidentally dropped, we showed our growth mindsets and can-do attitudes to seek solutions to the problem. A huge well done to all! Due to our teamwork and perseverance, we had a 100 per cent success rate for all decorations - a first in his career for Mr Kirk!
Below are some photographs of our December art tasks, our place value chart resource and the cover of reading programme book.
From all in P4K, have a wonderful festive period and a very happy new year!
It’s been another busy term for P4K!
In literacy, we are nearing the end of this term’s class novel “The Day the Screens Went Blank” by Danny Wallace. In our bug club reading programme, we have been reading non-fiction and fictional texts to develop our comprehension skills. We have become more confident in rephrasing reading questions to structure our written answers. In extended writing, we have learned about onomatopoeia and used these types of words in our Bonfire acrostic poem. We then completed a non-fiction report on the eatwell guide linking to our HWB topic on eating healthily and having a well-balanced diet. Our next steps in learning is to become more confident writing main points and chapter summaries in reading. In writing, our next steps are to continue working on sentence openers and learning more about apostrophe rules.
In numeracy and maths, we have been learning about written division methods and have also revised some of our learning on 3D shapes from Term 1. When learning about division, some learners have been sharing amounts into groups while others have been thinking about the role of the remainder in written division calculations. To revise our learning on 3D shape, we made 3D shapes from 2D nets using card and by carefully applying our cutting, folding and gluing skills.
Across the curriculum, we worked in groups to sort food items into their food groups and have developed our sketching and shading skills in Art. In PE, we have been learning about individual and paired balances in gymnastics. In music, we have been learning to play along to different sets of rhythms with drum sticks and have been playing the notes to different tunes on glockenspiels. We have also been learning our Christmas show songs with the rest of P4 and P7 and can’t wait to perform!
Please take a look at some photographs of our learning tasks below.

P4K have had a busy start to term 1 and have covered lots of learning.
We have completed some of our learning targets for term 1 and learners have made improvements in their use of punctuation, paragraphing and use of adjectives when writing diary entries and imaginative stories inspired from our class novel topic “The Boy Who Grew Dragons” by Andy Shepherd.
In numeracy and maths, we have covered and met our learning targets in addition, subtraction and 2D and 3D shape. As we approach the end of term 1, we will be learning more about multiplication and concepts involving analogue and digital time conversions, the language of time and calculating time durations.
You will see some of our key learning in the literacy and numeracy wall display pictures below before we were required to move into a new classroom. Thank you P4K for managing these classroom moves so successfully!
In PE, we have been playing a variety of invasion games, discussing different team tactics within an invasion game, and developing our throwing and catching skills.
