Teacher - Mrs Blair
Gym days - TBC for term 2
Outdoor Learning - Monday PM and Thursday AM
In literacy, we are focusing on frequently volunteering to read aloud with good pace, expression and fluency. We are practising pausing at punctuation when reading aloud. We are continuing to contribute to class discussions about information we have read using evidence to support our opinions, thoughts and feelings. We will then use this evidence to form a written response to literal and inferential questions relating to our Bugclub text The Road to Freedom.
In writing, we will increase our awareness of newspaper reports and the underlying features of a successful newspaper report. We will then create our own factual report writing in third-person narrative whilst continuing to up-skill our vocabulary and punctuation.
This term Miss Sewell and Mrs Blair will be organising an after-school drama club to reenact a WW2 play 'Bombs and Blackberries' by Julia Donaldson.
In numeracy we will be calculating addition and subtraction problems using mental and written strategies. We will then use a concrete, pictorial and abstract method to revise multiplication facts before multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. P7 will explore the grid method of multiplying to multiply by 2-digit numbers as well as the bar method to divide larger numbers equally or to leave a remainder.
In maths, we are learning to: measure lengths accurately using metric and imperial units of measure. We are learning to convert between different units of measure as well as calculating the perimeter and area of 2D shapes.
This term we will be continue immersing ourselves in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We have explored our own rights and responsibilities and we will now look at the rights of those around us. We will do this through our new class novel Wonder by P.J Palacio.
We will continue to develop our sense of self and how we fit into our world as we grow. We will do this through a transition week at Stirling High School (w.b. 10th November). We will access the high school learning environment, meet new staff and immerse ourselves into subjects on offer at Stirling High.
P7 will also attend numerous visits to both Bannockburn High and Stirling High throughout this term as they begin their formal transition events.
In P.E. our focus is badminton. We will learn: how to hold the racket with forehand and backhand grips; passing the shuttle to an opposing tea; keeping score and aiming at and hitting a target.
This term we will be broadening our horizons when looking at World War II. Using our knowledge of what life was like in Britain during WW2, especially for children, we will now compare their experience with children around the world, particularly Jewish children.
We will place events in chronological order and explore family trees to gain a better understanding of individuals. To do this, we will explore a variety of primary and secondary sources and discuss the importance of both types of sources in understanding history.
This month we participated in our final Christmas concert, Building a Borestone Christmas. Many of us took on speaking parts which we delivered confidently and clearly. We enjoyed watching the the P1-3 nativity during their dress rehearsal and we identified the roles our buddies were playing.
This month we finished the Bugclub text The Road to Freedom. This opened discussions about how people travel freely around the world nowadays as well as the rights of the children living in the plantations during the slave trade.
We aim to finish our class novel 'Wonder' by the end of this week too!
This month, we have been recapping how to calculate area and perimeter. We applied the formula A=LxB to help us find the area. P7 know to leave the units of measure squared. For perimeter, we practised finding the length of missing sides before combining them to find the total. Once we were secure in finding the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles, we moved on to compound shapes where we had to break the shape down into smaller shapes we could work with before combining the totals.
In art, we continue to use our knowledge of the visual elements to create art work inspired by famous artists. We have started working on a hanging decoration of concentric shapes. Look out for our decorations coming home!
We have enjoyed learning some French words and phrases. We used an online translator to build our vocabulary and create a French Christmas card. We designed the card using a French phrase before writing the entire message inside in French.
This term we spent a week visiting Stirling High School. Whilst there, we participated in group tasks to solve a variety of problems to complete The Great Crisp Challenge.
We enjoyed visiting different departments and meeting new staff, including social subjects and French. We were lucky enough to participate in Stirling High's fundraising for Children in Need too! We are looking forward to going back in December for their pantomime performance of The Wizard of Oz.
In Numeracy we have been busy practising our multiplication facts using a multiplication square to help us. We have been using our knowledge of place value to multiply by 10, 100 and 1000.
In maths, we have been exploring units of measure. We measured items around our class in mm, cm and m. We made estimations on the length of objects before accurately measuring them.
In reading, we have been improving our written responses to literal and inferential questions. We have been practising adding multiple pieces of evidence to our answers to further support our views and opinions.
In talking and listening, we have been participating in debating activities. We have been practising forming a balanced argument on a specific topic before practising the rules of debating through games and activities.
In French, we have been learning Halloween vocabulary before moving on to countries around the world. We have been participating in games and activities which practise our reading, writing and talking & listening skills. P7 are confidently writing the date each day in their jotters and are asking and answering general phrases in French now too!
P7 expressed an interest in handball following an input of the sport in P6. They recapped how to pass the ball using overhead, shoulder, chest and bounce passes. We practised some drills to pass the ball within the three second timeframe before aiming at the target to score.
We practised clay sculpting this term by making a clay poppy to acknowledge Remembrance Day.
Using air-dry clay, we created a circle before using a technique called 'slip' to cover any joins in the clay. We left the clay to dry over an egg carton to create a curved shape before painting the final details.
This month we have been busy preparing for leadership interviews. P7 considered how to apply for jobs in a real life context as well as the purpose of an application form and CV. Using this knowledge they started to identify and evidence their own personal skills and qualities which tie in with the remit of the leadership role they preferred.
Some of us have had our interviews already! Ask us how they went when you see us.
In Literacy, P7 have continued working on their reading comprehension strategies. P7 can now all confidently include evidence in their written responses to questions they answer about a text they have read.
P7 have been exploring some 'visualisation' tasks where they have to read an extract and draw what they think this might look like. Some of us found these tasks challenging but it was interesting to compare how people visualised the same extracts differently.
In Numeracy, P7 have been practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000.
This week we started exploring the four operations. We have started with addition. P7 will explore a variety of mental addition strategies they can use, when adding numbers with 5 or more digits, before demonstrating their knowledge in written addition strategies before the October holiday.
This month we have continued to work through the seven visual elements used in artwork.
So far, we have covered: colour, line, space, shape and value. Above is an example of a one-point perspective drawing which demonstrates positive and negative space as well as line direction, shape and colour.
P7 have been practising their pronunciation of basic greetings in French. They have demonstrated their knowledge through songs and games. P7 regularly ask to go to the toilet or fill up their water bottle in French. P7 have recapped numbers and days of the week too.
Some of us have been visiting the nursery and P1 settings to demonstrate our knowledge and sing some French songs with younger learners.
Bebe requin was a big hit!
P7 were gutted to hear that the upcoming cross country event has had to be postponed however P7 all agreed that their hard work and determination during this term so far has massively improved our running skills.
The next two weeks will be spent evidencing our progress through time trials and the bleep test! Ask us at home how we have improved.
This month we have continued learning about WW2. Through our class novel, we have explored the experiences of evacuation. Ask us who was evacuated during WW2.
We have also explored the blackout and how people kept themselves safe during the blackout. Last week, we started exploring rationing. We couldn't believe how a small bar of chocolate was supposed to last all week! We planned some meals we would enjoy using our ration coupons - although we didn't enjoy having to water recipes down to make them last longer or feed more people.
P7 started off this term learning about their rights as children in Scotland. They chose five rights that impact their daily lives at Borestone before ranking the five they chose in order of importance. Using these five rights P7 considered the responsibilities of the Rights Holder (learners) and the Duty Bearers (staff) in ensuring everyone has their rights respected. Once P7 have practised implementing these responsibilities, P7, and staff working in our classroom, will then sign their name on the t-shirt displayed in our class to show we are in mutual agreement. This will be displayed all year in our class.
In literacy, we are focusing on reading aloud with good pace, expression and fluency. We are beginning to contribute to class discussions about information we have read using evidence to support our opinions, thoughts and feelings. We have started using evidence from the text to form a written response to literal and inferential questions relating to our class novel 'Goodnight Mister Tom'.
In numeracy we will be extending the range of whole numbers we can work with by explaining the link between a digit, its place and its value. Using the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach we will learn to represent, expand, write and describe numbers with an increasing number of digits.
This term, we are looking at the 7 visual elements in art. So far, we have covered colour, line and space. Here is a look at some 3D optical illusions we created through our use of line and colour.
We have started looking at identifying France on a map as well as other French speaking countries (Francophones). We know the benefits of learning French and are now ready to start building our vocabulary through games and songs.
We have begun preparing for the upcoming cross country event. P7 started off with the bleep test to find out their fitness level at the start of training. Through time trials, games and relays P7 will develop their fitness and stamina whilst recording improvements to their pace and time. This will stand us in good stead for standing on the start line on 6th October!

We will then use this evidence to form a written response to literal and inferential questions relating to our class novel 'Goodnight Mister Tom'.
In writing, we will use our knowledge from our IDL topic and our class novel to write a personal, informal letter taking on the role of an evacuee during WW2. We will include a variety of punctuation and subject-specific vocabulary to up-skill our writing.
In numeracy we will be extending the range of whole numbers we can work with by explaining the link between a digit, its place and its value. Using the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach we will learn to represent, expand, write and describe numbers with an increasing number of digits. We will further enhance our ability to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000 before applying a range of addition and subtraction strategies.
In maths, we are learning to: identify and describe the properties of 2D shapes; accurately draw 2D shapes using mathematical tools; recognise regular and irregular 2D shapes in the environment; describe the link between 3D objects and 2D shapes and draw the nets of 3D objects.
This term we will be looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. We will start to explore the rights pupils have and what their duties are to ensure everyone has access to their rights. This will form our P7B class charter.
We will develop our understanding of our own personal strengths and attributes when applying for a leadership role and continue buddying our primary one buddies throughout this term too.
In P.E. we are working on our stamina and running technique over a longer distance. This is in preparation for an upcoming cross-country event.
This term we will be looking at World War II, with a strong focus on what life for a child was like during war years. We will look at the causes of WW2 before exploring The Blackout, evacuation, air-raid shelters and rationing.
The topic links closely with our novel, "Goodnight Mr Tom" by Michelle Magorian.
