Teacher - Miss Comrie
Gym days - Monday and Thursday
Outdoor Learning - Friday morning
In literacy, we have been adding ‘where’ to our Colourful Semantics writing, helping the children build longer, more detailed sentences by thinking carefully about the setting. They have enjoyed using pictures and prompts to expand their ideas and make their writing more interesting. We have also continued to learn new phonics sounds and revisit previous ones, using these skills when reading to decode unfamiliar words, blend more confidently and develop greater reading fluency.
This month, we have been interpreting and creating our own pictographs and bar graphs. The children have been developing key skills such as collecting and organising data, counting accurately, using tally marks, and presenting information clearly. They have also been practising how to read graphs carefully, compare quantities, and discuss what the data shows. Everyone has worked confidently to design their own simple surveys and turn the results into colourful, easy-to-read graphs.
This month, we have been busy practising for our Nativity performance, Knock Knock Nativity. The children have been learning their lines, songs and actions, and have even helped to make some of the decorations for the show. They have worked very hard, and we are looking forward to performing it for those who are able to come along and watch.
Since returning from the holidays, we’ve jumped straight back into our learning! In literacy, we’ve been continuing our work on Colourful Semantics to help us build super sentences. In maths, we’ve been exploring place value, learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones. We also enjoyed showing off our creativity with some fun Halloween art activities.
This term in Primary 2, our literacy focus is to develop reading, spelling, and comprehension skills. The children will practise their Read Write Inc. (RWI) sounds, learning to recognise sounds, blend them to read words, and use them to help with spelling.
We will also be working on building sentences using Colourful Semantics, which helps children think about who, what, where, and when, so they can write sentences that make sense.
The children will also practise comprehension skills, answering questions about texts to show understanding. They will have fun applying their skills by creating invitations and posters.
This term in Primary 2, we will continue to develop our understanding of place value. The children will work on recognising, reading, and writing numbers up to 100, exploring the value of tens and ones in each number. Building on this, the children will begin to practise addition and subtraction within 100. This will help them solve a range of number problems with increasing confidence and accuracy.
In data handling, the children will develop skills in collecting, organising, and interpreting information. They will create and read bar graphs to represent different sets of data and use Carroll diagrams to sort objects or information according to specific criteria. These skills will help them understand information in everyday contexts and support problem-solving across numeracy.
This term in Primary 2, the children will be exploring health and wellbeing through a focus on both physical and personal development. They will be learning Scottish social dances, practising coordination, rhythm, and working together as a group. These activities help children stay active, develop confidence, and enjoy moving in time with others.
Alongside this, we will continue to work on growth mindset, encouraging the children to try new challenges, learn from mistakes, and keep improving. They will practise thinking positively, setting goals, and supporting each other, helping them become more resilient and confident learners both in and out of the classroom.
This term in Primary 2, the children will take part in creative learning through two exciting topics. For our Nativity, they will develop their skills in singing, drama, and music, and use art to create posters, props, and other visual materials. These activities will help them express themselves creatively, work as part of a team, and share their learning with others.
In our Habitats topic, the children will explore the natural world by learning about living and non-living things and how they interact in their environments. They will study food chains, discovering how animals and plants depend on each other to survive. Through hands-on activities and observations, they will develop curiosity, understanding, and respect for the world around them.
In literacy, we have been developing our comprehension skills by using our online Bug Club resource. As a class, we listen to a story together and discuss the key events before answering questions based on the text to check our understanding. We then complete a follow-up task in class to deepen our comprehension and practise applying what we have learned. Alongside this, we have been working on “read and draw” sentences linked to our focus phonics sound and current reading book. This activity helps us practise decoding and understanding what we read, as the children must show their comprehension by illustrating the meaning of the sentences.
In maths, we have been exploring numbers to 100, focusing on identifying numbers that come before, after, and in between. We have also been practising ordering numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest to build a strong understanding of number sequences. Some children have even been challenged to work with numbers beyond 100, extending their learning and developing their confidence with larger numbers.
In IDL, we have been enjoying learning all about castles and knights. We have learned lots of new information. We explored the different parts of a castle and their purposes, learning how these structures were designed for protection and defence. We also investigated what life was like for people living in castles, including the roles and responsibilities of different people in a castle community. In addition, we learned about the armour knights wore to protect themselves in battle. We even had a go at drawing our own knight and labelling the different parts of their armour. This topic has helped us build our knowledge of the past and understand how people lived and worked during this period in history.
In HWB, we have been learning in a variety of ways. In PE, we explored different ways of travelling and moving around safely in space, as well as beginning to develop our skills in sending and receiving objects. We have also been thinking about relationships and emotions by learning about who is important to us and discussing what makes a good friend. Additionally, we worked together to redesign our class charter to reflect our new learning space. This was an important activity as it helped us create shared expectations, take responsibility for our behaviour, and ensure our classroom remains a positive, respectful, and welcoming place for everyone.
We are settling in well to Primary 2, practicing and learning our new routines with enthusiasm and focus. In Literacy, we have revised some of the Read Write Inc. (RWI) sounds we already know and have begun introducing new ones to build our phonics skills further. In writing, we’ve started exploring colourful semantics, a fun and helpful approach to improve our sentence structure and make our writing more detailed and interesting. We are also enjoying circle time, which supports our health and wellbeing, as well as music sessions that spark creativity and joy. Outdoor learning with Miss Beech has been a real hit so far, giving us exciting hands-on experiences outside the classroom. In Maths, we have started learning about 2D shapes, and the children are making great progress in naming these shapes and describing their properties with increasing confidence. Overall, it’s been a positive and engaging start to the term!
This term our literacy target in Primary 2 is to build on our reading and spelling skills by practising Read Write Inc. (RWI) sounds. The children will be working on recognising sounds, blending them together to read words, and using them to help with spelling.
We will also be learning about how to put sentences together in the correct order using Colourful Semantics, which helps children understand who, what, where and when in a sentence. This will support them to write sentences more confidently and with meaning.
In Numeracy this term our target in Primary 2 is to build a strong understanding of numbers to 100. The children will be practising how to read, write and count numbers accurately, and will be working on ordering numbers from smallest to biggest and vice versa. We will also be learning to identify which numbers come before, after and in between, which helps the children develop quick recall and confidence with number patterns.
Alongside this, we will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes, learning the names and properties of each (for example sides, corners, faces and edges), and looking for them in our classroom and local environment. This will help the children see how maths links to real life while strengthening both their number and shape knowledge.
In Health and Wellbeing this term, Primary 2 will be developing their fundamental movement skills in PE, with a focus on spatial awareness. The children will be practising moving safely and confidently in different ways, as well as following both verbal and visual instructions during games and activities. We will also be continuing our work on growth mindset, encouraging children to keep trying even when something feels tricky and to celebrate their effort as well as their success. In addition, we will be learning about supportive adults and how children can recognise and talk to trusted people who can help them at school, at home and in the community.
In our Interdisciplinary Learning this term, Primary 2 will be exploring the topic of Castles and Knights. The children will learn about what life was like inside a castle, including the different jobs people did and how they lived. We will also be finding out about some of the famous castles in Scotland and learning to recognise where they are on a map. The children will explore different types of castles, such as motte-and-bailey and stone castles, and discover why they were built and how they changed over time. This topic will link across literacy, numeracy, art and drama, giving the children lots of exciting and creative ways to deepen their understanding.
