This term we have been revising and consolidating place value for Tens and Ones and then challeging ourselves to Hundreds, Tens and Ones. We have a good understanding of digit values and have enjoyed playing different games.
In preparation for moving into Primary 3 we have been challenging ourselves with Hundreds numbers. We have made a good start and show a good understnding.
We have been learning about the different kinds of animals that would be on Scottish Farms. On of these animals is a Highland Cow. Whilst watching a presentation about Highland Cows we made simple notes about them. These notes were either key words or pictures.
After making our notes on Highland Cows we then used them to help us write about them. Mrs Cuthbert is very impressed with how we got on. We all included good details and information about them as well as an illustration.
With all this super weather we have made the most of our afternoons by spending time outside in the woods. We have been playing and climbing and having fun as well as investigating!
In our last visit to the woods we played a scavenger hunt game which involved us looking for natural objects with specific features eg: something that is smooth/soft, something that was rectangular or square, something that was jaggy and something that was green. We found a variety of different things in the woods and we created a quadrant for each feature.

Over the last month P2C have been participating in paired reading with P5/4W.
We have loved this time and it is great to show our reading buddies just how oour reading is coming on.
As part of our Farming topic we have been learning about life cycles. The first life cycle we learned about was the life cycle of a chicken. We made a life cycle model to show the different stages of the chicken's life.
One of the experiences and outcomes we focused on through our topic is to grow and look after a plant. On one occasion we grew cress and then watched it grow. We knew that in order to grow the cress needed light, warmth and water.
We have been working on building our confidence and independence in writing by using our phonics knowledge to help with spelling. We've also been learning about nouns and verbs, practising how to recognise and use them in our sentences. In reading, we’ve been continuing to develop our comprehension skills through our reading books and Bug Club activities. We are also really enjoying our class novel, Charlotte’s Web, which links perfectly to our new farming topic!
In maths, we are continuing to strengthen our mental maths skills through our daily Daily 10 game, where we practise quick recall of number facts, helping us become faster and more confident with addition and subtraction. We have been building on our learning about money, recognising coins, adding amounts together, and have now started to explore the idea of giving change in simple shopping situations. We have also been learning about ordinal numbers, using them to describe positions and order events. Alongside this, we have been moving on from skip counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s to begin investigating the concept of multiplication as repeated addition, using arrays and number patterns to help us understand.
We have started our new topic on farming and have been learning about the different types of farms, including arable, dairy, and livestock farms. As part of our learning, we’ve taken on the responsibility of caring for a toy chick, which we imagined hatched from an egg on Mr Zuckerman’s farm from Charlotte’s Web. Our job is to keep the chick safe and healthy so it can grow into an adult chicken. This links to some of our UNCRC rights, such as the right to be cared for and protected (Article 3) and the right to learn and develop (Article 29), just like our chick!

March 2025
For World Book Day we did a Thinking Reader. A Thinking Reader is a book study. The Thinking Reader we chose for our book study was 'Gigantic' by Rob Biddulph
To start off with we investigated the front cover. We looked at it and thought about what it reminded us of- something we have seen, heard or read before.
Then we used the word 'gigantic' in a sentence
We then discussed what we thought the book might be about.
Metalinguistics means looking at the words in the book. We worked in our phonics groups to skim and scan for words that contained our focused sounds. One group looked for 'ea' words, one looked for 'er' words and another looked for magic e words.
When we had identified words in the text we wrote them on a white board to then copy onto a display sheet for our floor book.
In class we have been learning about Nouns. We looked at two different illustrations from the books and then identified all of the Nouns. Mrs Cuthbert was very pleased with our knowledge of nouns.
In the next phase of our Thinking Reader we looked at the Main Ideas in the text. We used some Blooms Button questions to help see if we had a good understanding of the book
We completed a sequencing task about the text. Some people sequenced pictures from the text and some sequenced passages from the text.
We also completed a 'Bug Club' style worksheet which showed our understanding of the text. This was completed very well by everyone. We all had a great understanding of the book.
We then thought about a part of the story that made us feel a bit sad or a sad part in the story. We drew an illustration to show the part of the story.
The Last Part of our Thinking Reader was all about Summarising. The children had to summarise the book in 20 words.
This week we shared our knowledge about our Thinking Reader process with the rest of the school and our parents. We hope you enjoyed our assembly and finding out about our Thinking Reader.
After a first visit to talk to us and then they were called away for a water rescue emergency, the Amber team came back to speak to us and tell u a little about their job. We were very lucky and got to go outside and see the fire engine as well as getting to go inside.
We were able to tell them about what we had been learning about too. We learned about hazards in the home and how we can prevent them.
We have been learning about healthy eating and the different food groups. It is important that we eat foods from each of the different food groups. We should eat foods that all all different colours. To help us remember this we made an 'Eat a Rainbow' Visual.
In class we made fruit kebabs which used fruits of different colours. Mr Logan and Mrs Johnstone even came in for a sneaky kebab.
February 2025
Over the last couple of weeks we have been revising 3D shapes. We are learning the names of the shapes and to recognise them.
This week we have started to look at the properties of 3D shapes. 3D properties encourage the children to learn about the faces, edges and vertices (corners) of each shape. We have made a good start with this and will keep working on this for the next wee while.
This term we have been working on our recount writing. This means that we are writing about events/experiences that we have been part of. Last Week PC Josh and PC Lynne came into class to talk to us about road safety. We had a great afternoon. They spoke to us, we asked them questions, we tried on the uniform and we went outside to the police van. It was great! On Thursday we wrote about our visit from the Police. Mrs Cuthbert was very pleased with our work.
PC Josh and PC Lynne spoke about Road Safety.
It was fun trying on different parts of the uniform.
Our new IDL Topic is 'Keeping Ourselves Safe and Healthy' We have started to make a folder for all of our work. We have been working on the front cover.
We have been learning about the Emergency Services and making 999 calls. We can now identify the different emergency services and match the vehicles to the workers
January 2025
For 3 days in January the whole school took part in a music experience with the Rookie Rockstars. This involved us learning 5 different songs about perseverance, being friends, not bullying and getting along.
It was a lot of fun meeting Cara and Lisa. They played challenges with us and taught us actions to go with the songs. Mrs Cuthbert was nominate to take part in one of the challenges. She was mortified- rapping is not her string point!
Primary 2 were learning the poem 'Mince and Tatties' I was very impressed with how everyone joined in and tried very hard at the poem. Not everyone wanted to perform this infornt of their peers, but that is okay. The winner for P2C is and the runners up are
In our topic maths we have been learning about fractions. We have revised halves and have started to learn about quarters. To consolidate our learning we created our own paper pizzas and wrote the description above. These were then put in their own pizza box.
Part of our learning was about the community that we lived in. We have learned about map icons and coordinates. We used a map of St Ninians to identify co-ordinates and to plot landmarks that we know in St Ninians
We are aware that Scotland has its own traditional dialect. In class we have been learning some scots words. Some we already knew and others that are new to us. We used scots adjectives to write an alliterative sentence.
To link with our Scots words we also learned about scots animal words. Again we knew some of these and some were new. Mrs Cuthbert's favourite scottish animal is a 'spottit reidcoat' Do you know what this might be?
We have been making a dictionary of Scottish animal words.
December 2024
This afternoon we had our Christmas Party. What a fantastic afternoon we had. Everyone played well, joined in and the sportsmanship was great!
We played pass the parcel, musical bumps, Christmas Corners, Pin the nose on the Snowman and Best Dancer.
Half way through we had our party food and a break after all the dancing.
Thank you to P2M for joining us and making our Christmas 2024 party so special.
On the morning of the book launch we made truffles for our sleighs. We worked in small groups to make the mixture and then rolled and coated our own truffles. Mrs Dawson came in to quality assure them and said they were delicious, so we hope you enjoyed them.
After a lot of hard work and dedication we all completed a fabulous Christmas story. It was bound together in a zigzag book and we spent time completing illustrations and working on our dedications. We hope you love them as much as we do.
December saw us starting to write our Christmas Story. Mrs Cuthbert was very impressed with how well we used a word mat and our story maps to help us write the first few pages of our story. We wrote, edited and redrafted each page.
Mrs Cuthbert stuck these into our zigzag books as finished redrafting them. We loved seeing how great they looked and how our book started to take shape.
November 2024
Most of this month has been spent on rehearsing for our Nativity, Snuggle Up Stable. The children have worked so hard at learning all the actions and songs for our performance. This year we have 4 separate performances to look forward to.
At the start of this term we read the story of the Enormous Turnip and we put actions to it. This helped us learn to retell the story. Another strategy we used to help retell the story was to create a Story map of the story. We could the use this to remember what happened in the story.
After creating our story map we then had to innovate our story. This is where we change the characters and the setting to create a new story. We wanted to create a Christmas story so we all brainstormed and then chose our own characters for our story. We created a character plan. Our story was going to be set at the North Pole with Santa.
October 2024
Every week we do bug club. This is n interactive comprehenion resource. This week's book was called 'I like to play'. The book told us about different children and what they liked to do to play.
As a follow up task we looked at the index page and answered questions. For example... 'What page would I find out about dogs?' 'What would I find out about on pages 10-11?' 'What type of weather was mentioned in the book?'
First week back after the holidays we consolidated our learning on Venn Diagrams. The activity this week was all about different kinds of flowers. Did the flowers have 5 leaves and were they spotty, or were they neither/both. This was tricky as we had to count the petals and they were quite small. We did get there in the end. We had to remember if the flowers had 5 petals and were spotty they went in the middle of the Venn Diagram.
We looked at how Stone Age people communicate with each other- there is lots of evidence still around today of the cave drawings they did. There are caves throughout Europe that you can visit and see the neolithic drawings. We had a go at doing out own Stone age drawings on sand paper. They look great!
Stone Age people would not have had paintbrushes to help them create thier drawings. They would have used natural objects that they would have found around where they lived.
We had a go of using natural materials to print with. This was great fun. We used twigs and sticks, leaves and grasses, flowers and some corks.
Our problem Solving continues to go well. This week's was about a table plan in a classroom.
' Jean had to sit near the teacher. Peter had to remain in his original seat. Ali and Mary had to sit next to each other, but Mary wants to sit next to Jean. Bill sits directly opposite Jean and Andrew and Bill are not allowed to sit together. Where should everyone be placed?'
We completed this as a listening skills task and we all did well. Quite a number of children said they enjoyed the activity.
September 2024
We have made a good start to our IDL Stone Age topic. We have spent time looking at Stone age housing and how this looks different to housing nowadays. We created a timeline for housing and looked at how housing had developed over time.
We looked at Skara Brae. This is a prehistoric village which is located in Orkney. The children were amazed that this village was found in Scotland and want to plan a trip. They thought it would be great to look around. We looked at how the houses were laid out
Over the last few weeks we have been revising our knowledge about pictographs and bar graphs, looking at tally marks and interpreting the data.
Over the last couple of weeks we have worked in groups to carry out a survey, complete a tally sheet and the use the date to create a bar chart. The children have worked so hard in their groups and have produced super pieces of work.
Every week we do some problem solving. So far this term we have looked at the strategies of 'logical reasoning' and 'guess, check and improve'.
Most of the problem solving we have done has been quite hands on and active.
Last week we had to identify as many differerent shapes as we could usin 5 cubes. We had to make a shape, check we had not done the shape before and if we had improve our shape.
Mrs Cuthbert was very impressed with how many we identified!
Our Next stage in our Thinking Reader is to look at the main ideas about the text. We used some Blooms Buttons to answer questions about the text. This questions helped show our understanding of the story. We also completed a 'Bug Club' style worksheet about the book.
At the start of this term we started Colourful Semantics. This is a programme to teach children about the different components of a sentence. There is an action for each component. Ask us about them!
Week one we focused on 'Who' and 'Doing'
After revising 'Who' and 'Doing' in week 2, in week 3 we added another component 'What'
Mrs Cuthbert found it very difficult to chose a star writer this week!
After revising 'Who', 'Doing' and 'What' in week 4, in week 5 we added another component 'Where'
Each week the sentences are getting longer and more complex.
As part of our Health and Wellbeing programme, we have been focusing on Growth Mindset. It is important that children understand about and can grow a growth mindset. All through life there will be challenges and having a positive outlook and strategies will undoubtedly help. Over the past couple of weeks we have learned about what Growth Mindset is and what we need to try and do and not to do.
We are going to start some challenges this week and into next week, so I will post some pictures of these next month.
August 2024
Welcome to our website page. We have had a busy start to this year's session. Everyone has settled in well and we have made a good start to our learning.
The first thing we focus on at the start of the session is our class charter. This is where as a class we decide on our class rules based around our School Rules of 'Ready' 'Redpectful' and 'Safe'
The first couple of weeks we spent building relationships. We created an 'All about Me' lapbook. This included our favourite things, personal information and information about our family.
At the end of last session we achieved our Silver Award for Rights Respecting Schools. This year we are going for Gold. To start our journey as a class we looked at articles 7 and 8. The right to an identify and nationality and protection of identity. We created identity passports. Next we are going to look at how our community links to the Rights of the child.
We had a visit to St Ninians Library the other week. We met Alex who read us a story and then we chose some books for the classroom. Mrs Cuthbert also chose some books for our IDL Topic Stone Age.
Alex invited us back for a craft session later on in October. We can't wait to go back!
