May 2025
Last week we returned from our 3 day residential trip to the Cairngorms. Whilst there, P7 participated in a number of activities: archery, high ropes, battle zone and raft building. Some of P7 chose to camp outside in the bell tents during their stay whilst others bunked together in the bunk house. We enjoyed evening activities which included marshmallow smores round a campfire, footgolf and frisgolf.
Whilst there, all P7 pupils had excellent manners, which was commented upon by the staff working there, and they all gave every activity a go - demonstrating excellent resiliance and growth mindsets. Mrs Blair is very proud of you all and had great fun spending three days with you in a different learning environment.
Some P7 pupils stayed at Borestone whilst their class attended the residential. During this time they came together as a year group to explore new opportunities and make new friendships. They went swimming at The Peak, saw the new Lilo & Stitch movie and went bowling - where it got very competitive! They experienced cooking Mexican foods whilst spending time together in a smaller group in a more relaxed learning environment. Good fun was had by all!
I'm sure you will agree that P7 planned and hosted an amazing Family Fun Night at the start of this month. This event saw us raise a very generous £451 towards our leaver's week activities. From bingo to beetle drive and quizzes, P7 sure know how to put on a good night.
This month, P7 have been exploring and discussing the changes that happens to the human body during puberty. We have discussed body parts, changes unique to males and females as well as educating ourselves on menstruation and period poverty. We discussed personal hygiene as well as consent and individual rights of people, particularly online.
We have been busy creating our own business plans outlining our unique ideas for the Summer Fayre. P7 explored subject-specific vocabulary including 'investment', 'returns', 'profit', 'loss', 'breakeven' and 'consumers'. We discussed the difference between products (goods) and services before deciding what business we would like to offer. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 3rd June to see what we have been working on!
P7 have been using KNex to explore area and perimeter of irregular and regular 2D shapes. They have had to call upon prior knowledge of using the grid method of multiplication and the bar method of division to support them when calculating larger totals. Some of us have experienced calculating the area and perimeter of circles and semi-circles rounding pi to 3.
P7 have been exploring money through their IDL in Enterprise where they have been adding final totals, subtracting investments and costs before finding the difference to calculate profit.
This month we finished off our Bugclub reading comprehension stories. More of P7 pupils volunteered to read aloud ahead of transitioning to high school. Pupils read with great pace, expression and fluency. We are all confident using P E A to answer questions independently and most of us are now working on adding multiple pieces of evidence from a text to strengthen our reading responses. We will spend the rest of this term applying our reading comprehension strategies to short animation films, some of which have no dialogue.
P7 voted to stop reading Harry Potter as we felt we had taken too long of a break during our WW2 topic. Instead, we have voted to read the short story 'Once' which is about a young Jewish boy called Felix who lives in Poland during the war. P7 have demonstrated empathy towards Felix so far in his journey to try and reunite with his parents.
Plans for leaver's week are well under way. Thanks to your generosity P7 have already raised £969. With this, they plan to go bowling, ice skating, out for lunch and have a BBQ. They may even be able to treat themselves to an ice cream visit.
P7 have been blown away by your support and would like to say a big THANK YOU!
April 2025
We have started reading our next BugClub text to continue to improve and practise our reading comprehension knowledge, understanding and strategies.
More P7 pupils are volunteering to read aloud during Literacy lessons and they are really pushing themselves out of their comfort zone ahead of their transition to high school.
In Numeracy we have been focusing on area and perimeter as part of our focus on measure.
We have been looking at some units of measure (mm, cm, m, km) and we are beginning to confidently convert between units when calculating the area.
When working out the area of a square, rectangle or parallelogram P7 know to use the formula A = L x B. Some of us then have used this formular and halved it to calculate the area of a right angled triangle.
This month we have continued with Decider Skills. We look forward to our weekly input from Ms Nicholson and Mrs Fowler.
We are beginning to relate the situations and scenarios to real-life situations that we may face in our daily lives with a particular focus on high school transition and residential opportunities.
We have made a start to our IDL topic which for this term focuses on Enterprise. We have begun looking at the social, economic and poltical status of Scotland from the last census results. We will then look at the status of Stirling before our school community. This will help us to then plan and write a business plan and budget to create a Dragon's Den style talk to qualify for a loan. This loan will then be used as part of the Summer Fair to create profit which will go towards P7 leavers week activities. P7 have been enjoying interpreting the data whilst practising percentage knowledge.
We recently enjoyed another visit to St Ninian's library where we chose a book to enjoy during E.R.I.C (Everyone Reading In Class) time.
Some of us took advantage of the time in the library to sign up to their own library account to enjoy the benefits the membership brings using their library cards.
P7 would like to thank the parents helpers who came along and helped us with this visit.
Planning is underway for our upcoming residential to Cairngorms in May.
We have recently listed a preference for sleeping arrangements and group activities.
P7 are looking forward to pushing themselves out of their comfort zone and trying new activities in a new environment.
March 2025
This month we visited St Ninian's library to explore different genres and authors available to us. We discussed the facilities available to use within the library including access to a variety of texts, computers and a PlayStation!
Many learners left with a form to sign up to access the facilities as well as a book to enjoy. P7 have thoroughly enjoyed using our class library account to access BorrowBox where we have access to many audiobooks and Ebooks which we can read on our chromebooks or on an iPad.
This month we have started working on our informal letter writing.
We are pretending it is 1939 and that we have been evacuated to the country. Using parenthesis, punctuation and subject-specific vocabulary, we are writing a letter in first person narrative including some emotive language too. We are almost at the editing stage and we can't wait to share them with you.
In Numeracy we are using our knowledge of fractions and fractions of an amount to convert percentages into decimals and fractions.
We discussed where we might see percentages in a real life context and created a huge list for the wall. It got very competitive!
For the remainder of this term we will look at percentages of an amount and applying this knowledge to solve realistic challenges.
This month we have started progressing through 12 of the skills attached to promoting positive mental health and making positive choices.
Mrs Fowler and Ms Nicholson are supporting us with this once a week to help us be the very best version of ourselves in an ever evolving society. This is important in preparing us for the transition to high school next term!
On Friday 28th March P7 pupils went down to Stirling High School for a transition football event where we were teamed with and were playing against pupils from other schools within the learning community.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and really grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
We are coming to the end of our WW2 topic. The children have really enjoyed learning about the causes of WW2, important people in the history of WW2 as well as how Britain prepared citizens for life during the war.
We have learned about rationing, identity cards, evacuating, the blackout, Adolf Hitler and his early life.
Thank you to those who participated in the homework task of completing an Anderson Shelter. The children worked so hard on them and the finished products are tremendous - P7 should be very proud of themselves.
February 2025
February was a busy month. Following the damage to the roof P7 were temporarily accessing their learning at Stirling High School. Whilst we were there P7 demonstrated the values of Borestone Primary to a high standard, grabbing every opportunity with both hands and navigating their way around the 'big school'.
We are now back at Borestone in our PortaKabin and are settling in well. We have enjoyed taking on our leadership roles once again and most of us are now feeling more positive about the transition to high school in a couple of months.
In Literacy we have been working on our reading aloud and our comprehension strategies. We are using the text The Road To Freedom to help us.
Using P E A we can structure a written response to inferential questions which includes evidence from the text. We are also connecting our prior knowledge and using the internet to deepen our knowledge of slavery in America as well as the underground railroad.
In Numeracy we have started our work on decimals, fractions and percentages. We have discussed place value of decimal numbers and have used this knowledge to order, round, add and subtract decimals.
We are currently working on converting improper and mixed number fractions, ordering fractions and equavalent fractions. We can identify the numerator and denominator and are building confidence in adding fractions with the same denomintator.
We continue to enjoy our weekly Mandarin inputs. We have been exploring colours and countries this month.
Everyone gets engaged throughout these lessons and there is a huge buzz in the room when the lessons are going on. Kahoots have shown to be an extremely popular way to demonstrate our learning.
We are currently learning about World War 2. We discussed the potential causes of the war and the Treaty of Versaille.
We listened to the radio recording of Britain declaring war on Germany before looking at how life changed in 1939 for the people of Britain. So far we have looked at evacuation and identity cards. We will now look at Anderson shelters, rationing, the blackout and the Blitz.
As part of our World War 2 topic, we are reading Goodnight Mister Tom. We are thoroughly enjoying the experience of Willie Beech as he is evacuated from the city to live in the country with Mister Tom and his dog Sam. We are comparing the experiences of evacuees. Some of us have really connected with Willie and can discuss his thoughts and feelings as the novel progresses.
January 2025
In Literacy we have been reading The Eejits which is a Scots adaptation of Roald Dahl's 'The Twits'. We have been working on a number of reading comprehension strategies with a particular focus on clarifying and visualising. We read the description of Mr Eejit and Mrs Eejit before drawing our own visualisations.
We started off this term by looking at the life and work of Robert Burns in preparation for our Burns Supper at the end of the month. We have created invitations to invite our families and have been practising some Scots poetry, dance and songs to perform. We have recently performed a poetry recital for the class of one of the two Burns poems we studied: 'Up In The Morning' and an extract of 'Tam O' Shanter'.
In preparation for our work on fractions, we have been further consolidating our knowledge of division strategies. We have been using a bar method to help us visualise the links between division and fractions.
We are also working to improve the speed and accuracy of our mental calculations.
This term we will be working on our painting skills. We have started exploring watercolours and how the volume of water mixed with the paint dilutes the colour. We recognise that the benefits of using watercolours include the paint drying fast, multiple layers of paint can be added to the picture creating texture and you can mix the paints and clean the palettes efficiently and repeatedly.
We challenged ourselves to draw a picture of Robert Burn's cottage after spending some time researching his life. We created a one-point perspective and made sure all our horizontal lines met this point. This helped to create the illusion of things getting smaller in the distance. Mrs Blair noticed a huge improvement in our painting skills and displayed our artwork within the P7 corridor where they have received many compliments!
We recently participated in RookieRockstars. We learned songs about the importance of our mental wellbeing and how important our uniqueness is.
We sang songs, took part in challenges and followed along the dance moves. Some of P7 were very enthusiastic during rehearsal - I'm sure they'll rock your socks off at the concert!
We continue to enjoy our weekly Mandarin sessions. We are currently working on learning numbers within 20. We have recognised the pattern the numbers follow and we are beginning to use our knowledge to ask and answer simple questions with our peers. We have also learned how to say colours in Mandarin.
We continue to explore songs, rhymes and playground games from China whilst learning about the culture and lifestyle.
December 2024
P7Bl were thrilled to take part in their final Christmas concert. We enjoyed rising to the challenge of singing Little Saint Nick and following the Makaton for When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
A special shout out to our readers BD, KH, CMcE and CMacG who did a great job reading aloud with good pace, expression and volume. So much fun was had by all!
We have been enjoying our weekly Mandarin lessons. One that stood out for us in December was learning how to play Jian Zi. This is a common playground game played throughout China. We learned some of the rules before having a go ourselves!
This term we have been practising using pastels to add depth and shape to our art work. We know the effect using different shades of the same colour has on our artwork and creating a more 3-dimensional look. We explored how to layer colours to create different effects. We created a Christmas window scene and some Christmas lights.
We are now looking forward to our Christmas party on Wednesday afternoon. We have been busy planning traditional party games with our own twist and our song playlist is in full swing!
P7Bl wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Joyeux Noel!
This month saw us put the finishing touches to our Christmas novels. We have thoroughly enjoyed taking on the role of author, illustrator, editor and publisher.
Thank you to those who came along to our sharing the learning event last Friday. There was a great buzz around the room of P7 pupils sharing their own stories with their family and friends.
November 2024
P7Bl took part in a cross country event organised by Active Stirling. All pupils demonstrated amazing perseverance and were a great representative of Borestone.
We have been enjoying recording our personal best times across different running distances during our PE lessons and many of us have been trying to improve our times, recognising that the only competition is ourselves. One way we have been doing this is by regularly completing the daily mile.
We are busy working on our creative Christmas stories. We are using The parrot, the pirate and the cupboard as our model text. When analysing the text we identified different writing styles: personfication, metaphors and speech. We are currently working through our first draft of our own creative story whilst trying to include these writer's craft tools in our stories. We have completed the first draft of chapter 1 and 2 and we are now ready to begin chapter 3. We are looking forward to sharing our stories with you at our upcoming shared learning event.
We have been working on our multiplication strategies. We began by completing a game to identify our own personal targets of which times each of us would focus on. We recapped on prior knowledge of arrays, equal groups and repeated addition before moving on to multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000. We know that each digit moves to the left when multiplying and 0 is used as a place holder.
Now we are focusing on the grid method which is helpful when multiplying larger amounts. We have practised multiplying by one digit and some of us challenged ourselves to multiply four digit numbers by two digits.
Alongside our endurance running focus, we have been participating in weekly basketball lessons.
We recapped dribbling and the three main types of passes (overhead, chest and bounce) before moving on to team games. We will now explore the scoring system used, how to improve our accuracy aiming at the basketball hoop as well as using pivots to improve our passes. P7 have been very competitive during our PE lessons and are demonstrating excellent team work and co-operation skills!
P7Bl have been really engaged in their weekly Mandarin lessons. They have been learning words and phrases through songs, videos and practical experiences. The picture above shows us learning how to correctly hold a máo bǐ (writing tool). We practised writing numbers, symbols and our names before trying to write the Chinese symbol with the most (56 in total) strokes. The symbol above is one of the amazing attempts by one learner in P7Bl.
P7Bl have been participating in daily song practise in preparation for our upcoming Christmas concert.
We have been excellent role models for the younger pupils during the singing rehearsals.
Despite some of the songs being new, P7 have tackled them with a positive attitude and have thoroughly enjoyed performing for other classes during rehearsals.
Some of us are also taking on speaking parts and are busy behind the scenes learning the lines.
We look forward to seeing you at the concerts soon!
With only two chapters to go until the end of the second novel (Chamber of Secrets), we are eager to see what is going to happen next!
Those who are familiar with the novels are doing a great job at keeping the rest of us on our toes and making sure they are not sharing any spoilers!
We are really enjoying reading the book four times a week and watching what we have read of the film on the fifth day. The differences between the novel and the film have encouraged great discussion in class.
October 2024
We were so excited to see our hoodies arrive. We are really enjoying the privilege of wearing them in class. Some of us have commented on how the colours helps our buddies to find us in the playground as well as adding some uniqueness to our year group.
We are busy working behind the scenes on our very first Christmas themed novel. We have decided to use The parrot, the pirate and the cupboard as our model text which we will innovate and rewrite with a Christmas theme. To help us do this, we are currently getting to know the story by applying our BugClub reading comprehension skills to various tasks before applying the Talk4Writing model to the writing process. We look forward to showcasing them in December!
In Numeracy, we have been revisiting addition and subtraction. We worked through the mental strategies we can use before applying our knowledge of mental strategies to formal written methods. We used the place value counters to help us follow the concrete, pictorial and abstract process.
In Maths, we have been revisiting and demonstrating our knowledge on shape. We identified the properties of various regular and irregular polygons. We then moved on to looking at quadrilaterials and the properties of various four-sided shapes.
This term we have started using oil pastels to add texture and depth to our art pieces. We followed a step-by-step guide to draw a birds-eye view of a pumpkin. We considered where to start on the paper and the direction of the lines we were drawing to create a 3-dimensional effect.
We are very lucky to have a specialist teacher come into school on Fridays and teach us Mandarin. So far, our teacher has introduced us to the four different tones used in Mandarin as well as a very catchy song about ice cream! P7Bl were very enthusiastic during their first Mandarin lesson and were a great representative for Borestone Primary whilst our specialist teacher was visiting.
We are continuing to work through the Harry Potter novels. We are thoroughly enjoying sharing the second book together. We are currently on chapter 10 and are on track to potentially begin the third novel before the end of term. Watch this space!
Towards the end of October, P7Bl were practising their endurance running skills. We know the importance of warming up before a run, keeping a steady pace as well as warming down afterwards. We have practised using stopwatches to time our own and others personal bests over different distances. We are looking forward to the Cross Country event organised by ActiveStirling taking place on Thursday 7th November.
September 2024
Last week we finished our BugClub reading comprehension focus on Oliver Twist. We are now busy planning and organising our writing for this term; a newspaper article on a natural disaster we have learned about through our topic. So far we have decided on the features of a good newspaper article such as a bold, attention-grabbing headline, a clear image and quotes from charities/aid and we have looked at our model text to analyse the structure of a good article.
In Numeracy, we have been working on our mental addition and subtraction strategies. P7 had lots of discussion around expanding 4, 5, and 6 digit numbers into smaller amounts to work with.
We completed a great task demonstrating our knowledge of mental addition on Seesaw - make sure you check it out!
In October we will recap written addition and subtraction strategies in preparation for our SNAs.
This month we have welcomed Mr Smith into our class. Mr Smith is a fourth year student from the University of Stirling who is currently undertaking his final placement in P7Bl.
P7Bl have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Mr Smith - it's like he's always been here!
This term we have been enjoying learning the skills and qualities it takes to play as part of a football team. P7Bl have been practising their dribbling, passing and shooting and they have really demonstrated their willingness to work as part of a team.
This month we have been busy applying and interviewing for various leadership roles within the school. We all worked incredibly hard to demonstrate our different skills for different roles. We are all happy with the roles we were allocated and everyone has really shown themselves to be true leaders within the school.
August 2024
We have all settled well into P7. We have demonstrated ourselves to be excellent buddies and many have taken on additional leadership roles in the first couple of weeks of term. We spent time during the first week of P7 revisiting the UNCRC Rights of the Child before co-creating our new classroom charter!
Last week P7 handed in their leadership applications which will see P7s adopt roles throughout the school year. Some of the roles available are: Head Pupil, House Captain, Sports Leader, Digital Ambassadors and Social Justice Ambassadors.
During reading comprehensions sessions we have been enjoying reading Oliver Twist. We have been focusing on reading aloud with a loud clear voice, good pace and expression too. We clarified new vocabulary using an online dictionary and thesaurus and we have been using this new vocabulary knowledge to answer inference questions using evidence from the text to support our answers.
In numeracy we have focused on place value. Using the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach we can represent, expand, write and describe numbers with 5 and 6 digits. Some of us have been challenging ourselves to work with 7 and 8 digit numbers. Next month we will work on rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000.
Our IDL this term is Natural Disasters. We have been learning about tectonic plates with Ms Sewell and how the movement of these plates causes different types of natural disasters to occur. In September, we will be conducting our own research on volcanoes, hurricanes, tsunamis among other disasters. We will then use this knowledge to support our writing of a newspaper article.
