We have started our first block of athletics in term 4 by working on our jumping, running and throwing skills. Initially, we have focussed on the long jump, the baton relay and throwing the shot put.
In the second half of the term we will be playing summer games and developing our skills within them.
IDL
In our return after the Easter holidays, several pupils spotted some successful growth in our class planters.
We remain hopeful of a large yield of vegetables and some beautiful flowers in our playground soon!
P3H had great fun making their own canopic jars when learning about ancient Egyptian civilisation. The class have been intrigued by the beliefs about the afterlife and preservation of bodies and organs.
March 2025
IDL
As part of our IDL topic on our local area, we learned about some of the foods we eat and it's journey from source to consumer. We prepared the soil in various planters and will be taking the steps needed for a successful yield of our own in the summer months.
We made our own healthy wrap after learning about food hygiene. We now understand the importance of washing our hands at appropriate times; the dangers of cross contamination; how to store food that has been prepared and how to use kitchen utensils safely.
P3H have entered the RHET Tasty Tattie Potato Project. The competition offers pupils the opportunity to grow their own crop of ‘Rocket’ potatoes and then watch and learn about the growing process, before finally harvesting their own crop. We are very excited to see what we can produce and are already thinking about potato based recipes!
Literacy and English
We have been learning to write instructions about a number of shared experiences, such as: washing our hands, planting seeds and making healthy wraps.
When our writing has been completed, we have been self-assessing our ability to use sequenced openers, bossy verbs, specific topic vocabulary and a clear and structured layout in every piece of work.
Borestone Primary celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 6th March, but extended it to a fun filled World Book Week. The Book Fair was at our school all week which was very exciting for all the classes. P3H participated in shared reading sessions with P6K pupils. Throughout the week there were several opportunities to read for pleasure and discuss our favourite stories and characters in the books we have read.
February 2025
Health and Wellbeing
We have our PE hall back after the storm disruptions! P3H are making the most of the PE hall to work on various skills within gymnastics before creating their own personal sequences. The class are becoming very confident with their balances, rolls and jumps. They are also able to keep themselves very safe at all times by controlling their movements and following the class safety agreements.
P3H have been discussing the importance of good hygiene, in washing our hands at the correct times and brushing our teeth every day.
Literacy and English
P3H and P6K have started a second block of our shared reading programme. This has been so enjoyable and worthwhile for both classes. Pupils have been encouraged to read with expression, ask each other good questions about the texts and make observations about the illustrations. Well done to everyone involved!
Maths and Numeracy
P3H are learning problem solving strategies to tackle word problems in maths. They created their own RUCSAC acronym poster to remind them of the steps they need to take to solve a real life problem that requires one of the four numeracy operations.
The class have been having fun revising days of the week and months of the year in our time topic. They are now moving on to reading clock faces and telling the time accurately on a 12 hour clock.
January 2025
P3H are learning about Scotland and their local area this term. They have started learning about the life and work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh by recreating his famous, Glasgow Rose on paper and as stained glass windows.
The class have been learning about arrays, repeated addition, grouping and algorithms to understand multiplication and division. Pupils will be challenged weekly to learn a times table and apply their knowledge to problems in class and beyond.
In PE, we have started a block of gymnastics. We will be progressively learning about balancing, rolls, travelling and jumping. Pupils will be encouraged to work with safety and control as the gradually build up their skills into an expressive routine.
December 2024
Merry Christmas from P3H! Pupils have been incredibly busy this term with their Christmas stories and Nativity performances.
They have worked so incredibly hard and enjoyed a well earned Christmas party to end the term on a high.
Pupils started their Talk for Writing process by story mapping the model text, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. They innovated the text as a class then created their own version of the story with a Christmas theme throughout.
Each pupil included a fact file on their chosen animal character as well as several pieces of stunning art to go with their book.
November 2024
Some pupils from P3H confidently took part at the Country Dancing after-school club which led to the Stirling schools festival at The Peak. The pupils made us proud and gained so much from the experience.
P3H have joined up with P6A to take part in the Shared Reading project. Pupils have loved reading to each other and talking about the features of their chosen texts.
We have been working hard to learn various subtraction strategies using two and three digit numbers this term. This will help us tackle subtraction problems with confidence in future.
October 2024
P3H are so lucky to be getting taught by our music specialist this term. Mrs Kirk will be in every Wednesday so we will be learning a number of new skills between now and Christmas. In our first session, we were singing, keeping time and playing instruments to imitate sounds we might hear in a haunted house. It was great fun!
We have started our Talk for Writing process by story mapping part of our model text. See if you can guess which story it is!
The children are internalising the structure of the story before they carry out the imitation/innovation phase.
The first week back in term 2 has been very exciting… and scary! The children have embraced Halloween art activities and the Halloween disco was a huge success.
September 2024
Towards the end of term, our PE focus has shifted to fitness. Pupils were able to identify a number of changes to their bodies in the short term and long term. We linked learning with Emotion Works lessons that were focussed on the red cog (Body Sensations) and discussed why our bodies feel this way during exercise.
We have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes this term. Pupils are becoming more confident in naming shapes and identifying and comparing the properties of shapes. In numeracy, we have been using a variety of addition and subtraction strategies as well as recognising the link between the inverse operations. We have been highlighting the mathematical language used such as: ‘altogether’, ‘the sum of’, ‘in total’, ‘the difference’ and ‘minus’, then attempted to solve word problems with real life contexts.
Our context for writing this term has been focussed on our growing awareness of the UNCRC. Pupils have been using their knowledge of child rights to write diary entries and letters from the perspective of well-known film or book characters. Throughout the topic, the class have made connections and have shown empathy for others as well as showing a better overall understanding of their rights and responsibilities.
Thank you to everyone that managed to come along to our class assembly on the 25th. The class were proud and excited to show off their artwork and to perform in front of such a large audience.
The themes of the assembly were about being grateful and thankful for what we have. The class told the story of The Little Red Hen to explain the process of harvest and to highlight the appreciation we should have for the lovely food we get to eat. We also shared information on how people around the world celebrate the harvest festival differently.
The class were praised in particular for how they supported one another throughout rehearsals and during the performance. It was a fantastic group effort! Well done everyone!
August 2024
Pupils in P3H have settled in brilliantly! The first weeks back have been full of fun as we have got to know each other more and learn the routines and expectations with our new class.
Our Class Charter has been created by the whole class and links with the UNCRC. We know that we all have the responsibility to respect each other's rights, so we will continuously revisit our charter to help us understand this.
We are a Rights Respecting school and in term 1, P3H will be learning about different rights in more depth. We will use connections between stories and our own lives to help us with this.
In literacy lessons, we have been focussing on jotter layout, reading aloud, comprehension, writing accurate sentences, handwriting and listening with respect.
In numeracy lessons, we are starting the year learning about place value, estimation & rounding and number operations.
Beyond number, we are learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
Fundamental physical literacy skills and fitness will be our main focusses in term 1.
