Primary 1 have been enjoying a countdown to the Summer with lots of fun activities in the afternoons for the last 10 days of school.
We have had Stinky feet day, Shaving foam day, A minute to win it games day. We have Neon day and a visit from Poppy, Miss McKerr's dog to look forward to as well.
We have been working hard to achieve our Natural Health Award as well and have been practising using flints and fire safety. We hope to have a go at making our own fires and having some marshmallows! Yum!
We can not believe that this is nearly the end of Primary 1 but we are so proud of all they have achieved and are looking forward to seeing all the wonderful learning and growning up they do next year in Primary 2.

In literacy we have been learning new special friends sounds and words. In writing, we have been drawing our own story maps to help us retell the Little Green Dinosaur story. We will eventually be writing our own dino stories!
We have been learning about fractions, and halving. We have been using counting in 2's to help us work out half of amounts. We have also been learning to count in 5s and 10s. Can you practice at home?
We have been learning about our bodies. We have been learning the correct names for body parts, discussed similarities and differences between each other and what makes us unique. We drew portraits of a partner and discussed things in common and differences.
We have been learning about volcanoes. We know that friction and pressure can cause magma to come up from the Earths centre and cause volcanic explosions. We tried our own experiment using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to create a chemical reaction.
In literacy this month we are continuing to work on becoming more independent in our reading and writing.
We will be learning our next 6 Set 2 sounds. These will include ar, or, air, ir, ou and oy. We will be carrying out daily phonics task focusing on blending, writing, saying and listening to these sounds.
We are continuing to work on our reading skills in our daily reading groups. We are focussing on reading a sentence each as well as using our finger to follow along while our peers read.
For writing, our main focus will be a Talk for Writing Unit based on the story of The Little Green Dinosaur. Children will learn this story and then begin to innovate it to create their own dino themed stories!
In numeracy we are working on sharing and halving,. We will be learning how to share out objects in to equal amounts. We will also be learning out to 'half' and object or a number and link this to our learning of counting by 2s.
In math, we will also be learning all about Money. We will be learning about the different types of coins and how to recognize these. We will also be focusing on using money in real life contexts such as 'shopping' where we will focus on adding amounts and giving change.
In PE, we will be focussing on practising for Sports Day. This will be held in May.
We are working on following instructions, races, balancing, jumping, passing and shooting.
This term we will also be learning all about our bodies and how to keep ourselves safe. We will be following the Scottish governments website: RSHP.
Our topic this term is Dinosaurs.
We are learning about Where life life began, What is the Universe, Life on Earth, Dinosaurs and Fossils.
We will be learning all about the different types of dinosaurs including their facts.
In French we will be focusing on food words for fruit and using our french in real life 'shopping' contexts using number vocabulary as well.
In literacy this month we are working on becoming more independent in our reading and writing.
We are working hard on our morning starters, we are practising reading and blending words using our Fred Talk and selecting the correct word to match the picture. Then we write the word, focusing on correct letter formation and writing on the line.
We are working on reading sentences and working hard to increase the number of sentences we can read.
We also wrote a postcard from Space, writing a fact about the planet we chose to visit. We had to remember to include a name, address and a stamp to create a successful postcard.
In numeracy we are working on addition and subtraction strategies. We are learning different ways to help us find the answers. We will be learning to add and subtract using counting on and back, number lines and manipulatives like 10 frames and counters.
In math, we have been learning to read digital and analogue clocks, focusing on the hour. We are also learning about position and movement and have been learning left and right.
In PE, we have been learning gymnastics. We are learning to balance safely, jump and dop forwards rolls and pencil rolls. We have been having lots of fun on the pull out bars and climbing frame too!
We are working on following instructions, travelling safely and giving feedback to our peers.
We have made some space rocks and astronaut food to link with our Space topic. We are learning to select and collect the correct tools needed, stay safe and focused on hygeine, learning to wash our hands correctly.
Our topic this term is Space.
We are learning about day and night, how the planets travel around the Sun and know some interesting facts about the planets.
There are Rocky planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. They are made up of mostly rock.
There are also 4 Gas Giants. These are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. You are not able to land on these planets as they are made of gas and you would sink through them!
Did you know Mars is red because of the red dust on the planet?
Did you know Saturn has huge rings made of ice?
In phonics, we have been continuing to learn new special friends. These are 2 sounds together to make a new one. These sounds will help us blend, read and write more words!
We are practicing our letter formation, writing common words each morning when we come in
In numeracy, we are learning about ordinal numbers. We know ordinal numbers are used to order things and can be used in competitions, races, dates, recipes and instructions. We use ordinal numbers everyday when we are lining up.
Our topic this term has been Scotland. We enjoyed learning our poem, The Wee Rid Motor. We learned about the Scottish flag and the Scottish artist, Steven Brown. We even recreated our own McCoo pictures using pastels, making sure we used bold colours and thick and thin straight and wavy lines.
We have been learning about our special friend sounds. So far we have learned, sh, th and ch. We have enjoyed exploring the sounds through our play.
We are learning to write a ssentence about a picture. We draw our picture and then add in lots of detail! We are checking to make sure we have finger spaces and full stops.
We have been having lots of fun with our Kodaly lessons this month. We have been learning to follow a beat and sing new songs.
Our 2024 nativity Snuggle up Stable was a smashing success! Primary 1, 2 and 3 did a fantastic job at acting, speaking and singing. We managed 4 performances and we have learned so many new skills. We also learned all about the meaning of Christmas in the process!
We really enjoyed the Sharing the Learning event last Friday. We got to share our Christmas books with our friends and family. We adapted the story of the Little GIngerbread Man and made these lovely decorated 'houses' as our books.
We have been learning so many new sounds in phonics. We are almost at the end of our Set 1 sounds and will be moving on to special friend sounds after Christmas. This week we are learning the w sounds- we even have to wash some wild animals!
We have been learning the story of the Gingerbread Man. We have been creating our own versions of this story to make our Christmas books. We even made our own real gingerbread men!
We had a fun time watching the McDougall's Panto with Nursery and P2. We loved singing along to the songs and dancing! It has got us in th e Christmas mood!
We have been working really hard on our nativity practise and can't wait to show you all. We were kindly gifted some handmade knitted nativity characters for primary one to play with!
Although we all enjoyed our holidays this month, we have already done some fantastic learning so far since being back!
In phonics, we have began learning 2 sounds a week. We have been exploring a variety of learning styles through our play and workbooks. We have particularly enjoyed creating arts and crafts linked to our sounds. Check out our n-n nets!
In maths, we have been learning all about shapes and patterns. We know how to recognise and identify 2D shapes as well as understanding and creating patterns using colours or shapes.
In writing, we have been continuing to focus on our sentence structure. We know that a sentence needs a capital, full stop and finger spaces. Check out our spooky sentences for Halloween!
We have been learning our number bonds to 5. We know that 1/4, 2/3 and 5/0 go in pairs and make 5 when added together. We have explored this concept through our play and our written tasks.
In RME, we have been learning about People Who Help Us. We have been discussing their job role and thinking deeply about their values and what our own values are. For example we know that a firefighter must be brave and a doctor must be caring.
We have been continuing with our jungle topic! We have learned all about the animals and the plants that live there. We have been practicing our printing technique when painting, and using mixed media to create our very own jungle landscapes.
We have really enjoyed our learning in literacy so far! We have been learning the letter m and letter a so far. We are able to recognise the sound by listening for it, reading it and writing it. We have been exploring the sounds through our play which has helped us with vocabulary and creatitvity.
Our IDL topic this term is 'The Jungle'. We read the story 'Giraffes Cant Dance' which focusses on growth mindsets as well as having a jungle theme. So far we have been learning all about the animals in the jungle such as what they eat, where they live and how they move.
We had great fun at our first session with Active Stirling Multisports. Due to the wet weather on the first session we did some dancing instead but had a blast learning some new moves! We will be recieving 2 more sessions throughout the rest of September.
