In literacy, we have continued progressing through our phonics programme, building our confidence with sounds and blending. We also explored the features of leaflets, learning how they are used to inform and persuade. Using this knowledge, we planned and wrote our own leaflets on Almond Valley.
In numeracy, we have been consolidating our understanding of numbers up to 100, ensuring we can count, read, and write them confidently. We also learned how to compare numbers using the terms greater than, less than, and equal to, and practised using the symbols >, <, and = correctly.
In outdoor learning, we took part in fun scavenger hunts that helped us explore nature while building teamwork skills. We also used sticks to make letters and words, helping us practise our spelling sounds in a creative, hands-on way. To finish off, we enjoyed a trip to the park where we combined learning with play.
In literacy, we’ve been continuing to learn our new sounds and using them to help us read and write. We’ve been working hard on blending sounds to read new words and enjoying our reading books. We’ve also been learning about adjectives—describing words—and had fun using them to make our sentences more interesting. In writing, we learned how to sequence and describe a life cycle. We used our knowledge of living things to write about the life cycle of a frog, describing each stage from tiny eggs to tadpoles and finally to adult frogs.
We’ve been working hard in maths and having lots of fun revising some important skills. We’ve been practising the days of the week and telling the time to the hour using o’clock. We enjoyed using clocks to show different times and playing games to help us remember the order of the days. We’ve also been learning about numbers, focusing on finding 1 and 10 more or less. We used number lines and 100 squares to help us understand, and we’re getting really good at spotting patterns in numbers!
We had a fantastic time at Sports Day and really enjoyed taking part in all the activities. During the potted sports, we worked hard as a team and earned lots of points for showing our school values like teamwork, respect, and perseverance. Everyone gave their best effort and encouraged each other throughout. One of the highlights was taking part in our running race—we were so excited to line up, give it our all, and hear our classmates cheering us on. It was a fun and active day that made us feel proud of what we achieved together!
Almond Valley
We had a great time on our trip to Almond Valley! While we really enjoyed seeing all the animals, the different play areas were definitely a firm favourite across P2M. It was a fun-filled day with lots of laughter, exploring, and happy memories made.
P2M have managed to fit lots of fun learning into April even with the holidays. We have jumped straight back in and are looking forward to our last term in P2
We have been working on building our confidence and independence in writing by using our phonics knowledge to help with spelling. We've also been learning about nouns and verbs, practising how to recognise and use them in our sentences. In reading, we’ve been continuing to develop our comprehension skills through our reading books and Bug Club activities. We are also really enjoying our class novel, Charlotte’s Web, which links perfectly to our new farming topic!
In maths, we are continuing to strengthen our mental maths skills through our daily Daily 10 game, where we practise quick recall of number facts, helping us become faster and more confident with addition and subtraction. We have been building on our learning about money, recognising coins, adding amounts together, and have now started to explore the idea of giving change in simple shopping situations. We have also been learning about ordinal numbers, using them to describe positions and order events. Alongside this, we have been moving on from skip counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s to begin investigating the concept of multiplication as repeated addition, using arrays and number patterns to help us understand.
We have started our new topic on farming and have been learning about the different types of farms, including arable, dairy, and livestock farms. As part of our learning, we’ve taken on the responsibility of caring for a toy chick, which we imagined hatched from an egg on Mr Zuckerman’s farm from Charlotte’s Web. Our job is to keep the chick safe and healthy so it can grow into an adult chicken. This links to some of our UNCRC rights, such as the right to be cared for and protected (Article 3) and the right to learn and develop (Article 29), just like our chick!

For World Book Day, we spent the week doing a Thinking Reader on Gigantic by Rob Biddulph. This helped us develop a range of literacy skills, including prediction, summarising, and understanding the text. We explored vocabulary and metalinguistics by identifying nouns and finding words with our phonics sounds. Additionally, we practiced skimming and scanning to find evidence to support our understanding.
We had an exciting visit from the Amber Fire and Rescue team, where we had the chance to ask questions about their uniform and the different types of rescues they carry out. They taught us about fire safety, including what to do in an emergency, and then showed us their fire engine. We even got to sit inside and explore the equipment they use to help keep people safe!
We have been continuing our learning about 3D shapes by exploring their properties, such as the number of faces, edges, and vertices. Additionally, we have been strengthening our addition skills by using money, practicing adding different amounts and calculating totals.
With the weather improving, we have enjoyed getting outside after lunch to complete the 'Daily Mile'. We collect a counter for every lap we complete and we have been trying to beat our personal bests. We have also focused on some football skills in PE such as passing, dribbling and shooting.
P2M have had another busy month full of fun and learning. We enjoyed our shared learning with P2C, but we are pleased to be settled back in our own classroom. We have started back up our morning starter stations. This month construction and hair and beauty have been a favourites during times of play.
We are continuing to learn our RWI phonics sounds. We have been practicing to read and write our green words linked to our weekly sounds.
We have learned about sentence openers, including instructional openers, and have used them in our recount writing to make our sentences more engaging.
This month we revisited our number bonds and doubling. We are trying to improve our fluency of these number facts. We had great fun making number bond paper chains.
We have also started to look at 3D shapes. We have been learning the names for these shapes and have been identifying these shapes in our environments.
We have started our new topic "Keeping ourselves safe and healthy. We had a fantastic visit from the police who spoke to us about road safety before letting us try on their uniform and look inside the van.
Next we looked at emergency situations and tried out some role play 999 calls. We now know when we may need to call and what information we will need to pass over.
We have been learning how to order and sequence numbers up to 100, practicing placing them in the correct order and understanding their values. We have also been exploring fractions, specifically 1/2 and 1/4, by looking at both shapes and numbers. Through activities, we have learned how to divide shapes into 2 and 4 equal parts or groups.
We have started our Scottish topic and have been exploring where Scotland is in the world, as well as learning the names and locations of cities in Scotland. Our main focus is on Scots language, and we have been learning the names of animals in Scots, as well as adjectives to describe them. We've also enjoyed studying the poem "Mince and Tatties," which has inspired us to create our own "Mince and Tatties" art. This has been a fun and creative way to connect with Scottish culture while developing our language and artistic skills.
We are continuing to learn our new RWI (Read Write Inc.) sounds, which helps us improve our reading and spelling skills. We are also practicing our comprehension through our Bug Club tasks, where we read stories and answer questions to understand them better. In addition, we are enjoying using the Scots words we have learned in our writing. It's fun to put our new vocabulary into sentences and stories, helping us connect more with the Scots language while developing our writing skills.
For three afternoons, we took part in the Rookie Rockstars program, where we learned a variety of fun songs and actions. These activities were designed to promote important values such as friendship, individuality, and anti-bullying. Through music and movement, we explored how to be kind and supportive friends, celebrate what makes us unique, and stand up against bullying. The songs helped reinforce positive messages, while the actions made it easy for everyone to remember and practice these important lessons in everyday life.
We have had another busy month in P2M! We hope everyone has a well earned rest and enjoys the holidays. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the New Year!
We completed our Christmas story books "When Santa got stuck up the chimney" and enjoyed sharing our learning with our adults. A great amount of hard work has went into these from learning the model text to being innovative and creating our own story.
We had great fun learning our Christmas songs for our Nativity. We hope you enjoyed watching us perform.
We have been learning about place value, focusing on how tens and ones work in numbers. This helps us understand how numbers are made up and how to break them down into smaller parts.
This month we have been creating our Christmas Books. We learned the story of the Enormous Turnip. Then we used our innovation skills to adapt this story to create our own individual "Santa got stuck up the chimney" story.
Our numeracy focus this month has been shape. We have been learning to identify 2D shapes and there properties. We introduced pentagon, hexagon and octagon.
We took the time to refresh our class charter. We discussed our Children's Rights and which ones were the most important to us as a class. We then came up with what we need to do in order to achieve these.
We have been learning how to use Venn diagrams to sort objects based on their different characteristics. This helps us compare and organise items in new ways! We also continued practicing finding the numbers that come right before and after a given number, which strengthens our counting skills and helps us understand number order better.
We learned that Stone Age people made cave drawings to tell stories and communicate, using materials like charcoal, rocks, and natural pigments. We tried mark making ourselves by experimenting with different materials, just like they did! This helped us understand how early people used creativity and resources around them to express themselves.
We explored how to recognise non-fiction texts by looking at the types of pictures they use, like photographs and detailed illustrations, which help show real information. We also learned that non-fiction books often include an index, a special tool that helps us find information quickly. For our task, we practiced using an index to locate specific topics and pages.
We have started focusing on making our letters the right size, paying attention to how tall or short each one should be. This helps make our writing clear and easy to read! We’ve also begun learning our capital letters, understanding when and how to use them, especially at the beginning of sentences and names.
The hard work has continued in P2M throughout September. Check below to see what we have been learning about in literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing and IDL.
We have been focusing on Colorful Semantics, particularly the "who", "doing" and "what" components. We have created some silly sentences to help us work on sentence structure and improve language comprehension skills in a fun, engaging way.
In numeracy, we have been exploring how to create bar charts. We've focused on gathering data, organizing it into categories, and visually representing it using bars. We carried out surveys of other classes and found out what P2M's favourite sport was. This activity helps us understand how to compare different sets of information and interpret data in a clear, visual format.
P2M has been exploring the growth mindset and the concept of the power of yet. We've been learning how important it is to keep trying and embrace challenges, understanding that we can improve with effort. By training our brains, we're becoming more confident in our ability to learn new things and overcome obstacles.
Our IDL topic has been The Stone Age. P2M have enjoyed learning about what life would have been like back then. This includes what people would have worn, eaten, used and where they would have lived. The children learned about Skara Brae and will be using this knowledge to write a report, so look out for this in the near future.
Welcome to our website!
We had a very busy start to the start of term. We are very much looking forward to all the new learning that is planned for us in P2!
Keep checking back to see what we have been learning about!
We started this term with a very important job, we created our class charter. We learned about articles which were important to us and talked about what they meant to us.
We know that our class charter means that we all look after each other, treat each other respectfully and we can share our problems with adults who will help us. The adults make sure that everybody in our class has rights at all times.
