P6A have had a very busy June!
We’ve been finishing off our learning and getting ready for the summer holidays. We’ve enjoyed lots of rounders tournaments with P6K and even took part in a P6 Mini Olympics, where we put our athletics skills from PE into action.
In Numeracy, we’ve been learning about grid references, compass points, and using bearings to give directions. We used our knowledge of angles to help us navigate maps and give accurate directions. We also explored symmetry—identifying lines of symmetry and drawing shapes with multiple lines of symmetry.
In Literacy, we worked on a persuasive piece of writing about saving our environment. This was inspired by everything we’ve learned through our John Muir Award. We used a range of persuasive techniques to convince our readers to take action and help protect the planet.
In Health and Wellbeing, we continued exploring our Enterprise topic: “Our Rights, Our Voices.” We discussed important themes including:
Education – Is it a right or a privilege?
Child Labour – What’s the real cost?
Children in Conflict – Whose responsibility?
Digital Rights – Are we safe online?
Climate Justice – Protecting future generations.
I hope everyone has a fantastic summer holiday – you truly deserve it after working so hard all year, especially with all the changes! I'm really looking forward to seeing you all as excellent role models in P7 - Miss Armstrong.
May has been an incredibly busy and exciting month for Primary 6! We kicked things off with our class assembly on Religions Around the World. Everyone did a fantastic job, speaking confidently and clearly in front of the whole school, as well as family and friends.
In Numeracy, we’ve been exploring data collection and angle measurement. We've analysed different ways of presenting data, including pictograms, bar charts, and pie charts. We've also been using protractors to measure a range of angles and calculate missing angles in shapes.
In Literacy, we’ve been working hard on writing an information report all about John Muir. We've learned about what it means to be a conservationist and what the John Muir Award involves. We've included all the key features of an information report and practised proofreading and editing our writing using our Chromebooks.
In PE, we took part in a rugby taster session, and were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed it—even those of us who were a little unsure at first! We've also been practising a variety of athletics events such as the 100m sprint, team relay, long jump, and triple jump.
We also enjoyed our school trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park! It was a fantastic day out, and everyone had an amazing time. The highlights of the day were definitely the Birds of Prey display, the adventure park, and the Sea Lion show.
Primary 6 have recently begun their Buddy Training in preparation for meeting their future Primary 1 buddies! They’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a positive role model and a supportive Buddy for the younger pupils.

"I like how the little ones are super cute and funny." MC
"I like when I see my buddy, because they come and give you hugs and they are funny." RMcN
"I like how we have gotten to know all of the nursery children." MMcG
Primary 6 have started working towards their John Muir award at Discovery Level. The John Muir Award encourages people of all backgrounds to get out and enjoy nature! Through the award participants complete many different activities exploring the themes of Discover, Explore, Conserve and Share.
P6 would like to wish everyone a very happy return from the spring holidays! P6A have had a very busy April, even with some time off!
In numeracy we have been finishing our measurement topic, looking at converting measures, measuring area, perimeter and volume and reading scales.
In Literacy we have been focusing on reading with expression and increasing fluency when we read aloud. We have also been learning about synonyms of adjectives to make our writing more interesting.
In P.E. we have been developing our gymnastics skills. We have looked at performing different jumps, rolls, balances and creating routines demonstrating these skills.
Before the spring holidays all of Primary 6 attended an Active Stirling Tennis Festival at Kings Park. Everyone loved taking part in the small tennis games and activities and even win some small prizes! Well done to LK in P6A who was spotted for his manners, resilient attitude and sportsman ship displayed during the tournament. I was so proud of how engaged and respectful everyone was and some even surprised themselves about how much they enjoyed it!
P6 have been receiving Mandarin lessons since term 1 and have been very excited to begin some Mandarin cooking lessons! The children have been very responsible and respectful during the cooking sessions and have loved eating what they have made!

P6A have had a very busy March! We were busy with paired reading with P3F, gymnastics in PE, learning about our rights in Health and Wellbeing and celebrating diversity and religions around the world!
In Literacy we have focused on the reading skills of summarising and questioning. We have worked so hard to use evidence directly from the text and apply our knowledge of using speech marks correctly in our answers. In Writing we have been working on up levelling sentences and paragraphs with figurative writing and imagery. I was blown away at the range of amazing vocabulary and ideas the class had to turn a boring paragraph into and detailed and interesting piece of writing!
In Numeracy we have been finishing off our topic of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. We tested our skills by applying our knowledge of Percentages of Amounts in a real world context, looking at when shops provided discounts on products. This also linked in our money skills from term 1.
In March P6 and P3 got together to participate in paired reading, to celebrate our love for reading for enjoyment! Here is what we enjoyed about it:
"I enjoyed seeing my Buddy and I always looked forward to reading with her." MC
"I loved that I could read to my Buddy and they could read to me." MD
"I loved getting to know my Buddy, reading with them and giving them high fives." RMcN
P6A have been learning about their rights. We studied Article 7, the Right to an Identity. Your identity involves your characteristics, appearance, values and your name. We discussed how we are all unique, there will never be another you! Your name is a huge factor in your identity, so we created our own graffiti names to celebrate!
We have also studied Article 19, The Right to be Safe. We especially focused on being safe on the internet and social media. We became Privacy Detectives and discussed what we should and should not share online to keep us safe.
P6A had a pretty crazy start to February, where we had to move into the hall with P6K, due to the storm damage. Although, everyone did amazingly well with this transition and I am so proud of you all. Everyone showed so much maturity and understanding of the difficult situation we were in, you all took it in your stride. We are now in our new mobile hut and getting used to our new learning environment.
In writing, we have been learning about different genres of poetry. We have learned about the different features of poetry that you would see in lots of different poems such as, haikus, cinquains and acrostic poems. We have also created lots of our own poems in these styles!
In numeracy we have been working on fractions. We can convert improper and mixed number fractions, we can identify and form equivalent fractions, we can order fractions in size and find fractions of an amount using our multiplication and division skills. Our next steps are converting fractions, decimals and percentages.
In reading, P6 read the story about the Kelpies. We learned that Kelpies are Scottish mythical creatures that are lot more sinister than what they seem... We then discussed what other Scottish Mythical Creatures or legends we know about already. We used our new knowledge of the Kelpies and created some fantastic art work of the Kelpies sculptures in Falkirk. Within the drawing process we learned about sketching, shading and the use of colour and tone.
When P6 moved to their new learning environments, the first thing we did was discuss how can we make this the best environment possible for learning and our health and wellbeing. We decided to create a new class charter, looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Through a class vote, the top rights for our class were:
Article 2- All children have these rights
Article 12- The right to an opinion
Article 15- The right to set up groups and choose your friends
Article 24- The right to things that keep you safe and healthy
Article 28- The right to a good quality education
Article 31- The right to play and rest
We then discussed how we can follow our charter, while respecting the rights of others, to have the best possible learning and health and wellbeing while at school.
Happy New Year! P6A have settled very well back into class and have hit the ground running. We have been very busy with our Scots topic and learning our Scots Poems. In Numeracy we have been learning different strategies to multiply and divide numers. These have included partitioning in the grid method, the column method and the bus stop method. In Litercy we have continued with our Bug Club comprehension skils and have been studying different Scots inspired books. We enjoyed reading "The Selkie Girl" and learning about Scottish mythical creatures, but our favourite has been "Cinderellae" by Roald Dahl in his Reekin Rhymes. We loved his humorous retelling of the fairytale and transalting the different Scots words. In PE we have joined with P7BL to try some Country Dancing! Although there was initially some doubts, everyone has really enjoyed it, including Miss Armstrong! So far we have practiced the Candain Barn Dance, the Gay Gordons and the Virginia Reel.
Well done to everyone who learned and recited our Scots poem "Beasties" By Helen Cruickshank. You all did an amazing job, I am so proud of you all! Mr Kirk was amazed at your confidence and how well everyone articulated the poem in Scots. It was a very close call to choose our winners. Well done to CS and MMcG, you both did an amazing job and I can see how much the win meant to you both. Also a big shoutout to ML, who was incredibly brave and showed increasing confidence performing her poem independently. One of my favourite performances was by HMcB and IMcP who almost rapped their poems! Well done everyone!
P6A held their own Burns Supper this term. We had a little tasting session of some Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, followed by some shortbread and some Tunnock's Caramel Wafers. We even had some Iron Bru! A special thank you to Mrs Fowler, who helped heat and serve all the food. Evereyone had such a lovely afternoon and some people even had seconds and thirds!
P6A have been very busy this December writing our Christmas story books and beginning to decorate the classroom for Christmas. Everyone worked so hard at being an author, editor, illustrator and publisher! We had the opportunity to share our fantastic stories with family and friends at our Share the Learning event on Friday 13th. Well done everyone, you should be so proud of yourselves and thank you for sharing your stories with me this term! I saw a massive improvement in everyone's writing skills by the end of this project. To finish the term we have made our own Christmas ornaments from clay. We molded our ornaments, painted and glazed them, just in time for Christmas! I hope everyone has a great holiday and I will see you all in the New Year!
Well done to all the boys and girls in P6A that took part in the Christmas show! Everyone worked so hard learning all the songs and the actions. A special mention to all our readers, you all did an amazing job, CS who taught all of P6A the Makaton for our song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town'" and to our amazing Sugar Plum Fairies, who choregraphed their dance all by themselves, you were all amazing!
In December we were very lucky to have a special visitor from the government who talked all about democracy in Scotland and the UK. P6A did very well, answering the questions and sharing what we have already learned. We also started looking at voting and elections. We know that in a democracy you elect people to represent you in government and this is done through the process of voting. In Scotland you can be 16 to vote at national elections (in Scotland) and 18 for general elections (all of the UK). We know that you vote using a ballot, at a polling station, which is known as polling day. We then created our own manifesto posters.
This month P6A have been working very hard on their Winter stories. We have been busy planning, drafting and redrafting our chapters. We have aslo been using different strategies to add and subtract whole and decimal numbers. We can confidently use various strategies such as, partitioning, using an empty number line and the column method to add and subtract to 1 decimal place. In Health and Wellbeing we have been focusing on living healthy life styles and what that means to us. We explored what a balanced diet looks like and thought of small changes we could make to our diets to ensure we are eating a range of the different food groups.
P6A celebrated Book Week Scotland, 15th-21st Novemeber. We looked at our favourite books and characters in books. We were also very lucky to have a trip to St Ninian's Library, were we swapped our books. P6A love going down to the Library and exploring all the amazing books they have to offer, talking with the Librarians about books they enjoy and recommending books to their peers.
Anti Bullying Week took place from the 11th-15th November 2024. This years theme was 'respect'. P6A discussed what respect means, looks like and sounds like to us.
Some ideas were, respecting yourself, treating others the way you wish to be treated, respecting peoples belongings and opinions and respecting your right to be safe.
We also looked at the roles of bullying, the ways we can resolve conflict and celebrated Odd Socks Day. Odd Socks Day focuses on how we are all unique and our differences should be celebrated.
In Numeracy P6A have been working on different mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We have also began looking at 2D shapes and 3D objects. since returning to school we have began looking at a model text for our Winter story called Stuck in a Snow Globe. We have examined the text and created visualisers for the setting, character profiles and story maps for the plot. We are looking forward to creating our own stories soon! In PE we have been practicing for the Stirling Schools Cross Country Event. We have been focusing on keeping a consistent pace and building our strength and stamina. In Religious and Moral Education we have started to look at values and beliefs. We discussed that everyone has different values and beliefs that affect how they act and judge what is important in their life. We then assessed our own values and what is important to us.
In Literacy we have been learning about recount writing, through the form of a diary entry. We planned, drafted and redrafted our diaries about a day in the life on the Titanic. We applied our prior knowledge about the Titanic to our diary entries. We also focused on including some figurative language, such as, similes, metaphors and rhetorical questions, to make our diaries more interesting for the reader.
We have begun learning about a new topic, Democracy. We have discussed what we already know about democracy and what we would like to find out. We know that democracy means 'rule by the people' an it involves voting, elections, laws and parliament. Questions we have asked are:
"Why are the groups called parties and what are they?" M
"Who created democracy?" J
"What is the difference between a Prime Minister and a President?"
P6A have had a very busy September! In Bug Club we have been reading A Titanic Story and working on our comprehension skills, especially clairfying, questioning and prediciting. In Numeracy, we have been working on place value, roudning and decimla fractions. We found this tricky at first, but applied our growth mindset skills and persevered. In P.E. we have enjoyed developing our basketball and football skills, while working on teamwork and cooperation skills. In writing, we have written newspaper reports on the launch and sinking of the Titanic and are now working on our Diary entries. We have been focusing on using speech and some figurative language, espcially similies, alliteration and rhetorical questions, in our writing.
P6A loved their trip to St Ninians Library in September. Alex, the librarina, was super helful and welcoming. We had a chance to explore the libaray, take out some books for school, create some flower art (which is now proudly displayed at the library) and listen to some audio stoires. We are hoping to have another trip after the October Break!
This term we have been learning all about the Titanic. We have absolutely loved this topic and have been using many different skills to enhance our learning. We have,
Used drama to recreate the main events
Reserached the structure of the ships and why it was know as "unsinkable"
Interprated data about the link betwene survival rates and the socila classes
Researched key firgures on the ships and their involvement on the construction/ sinking of the Titanic
Held a class debate about who was responsible for the sinking of the ship
Created some lovely Titanic art peices!
Welcome to P6A! Everyone has settled back into school and a new routine really well. The first thing we focused on was establishing our Class Charter. We discussed that we all have rights and looked more closely at which rights are really important for our class. We picked Article 31: We have the right to play, Article 28: We have the right to an education and Article 23: Anyone with a disability has the right to live an active and full life
P6A began the new school year looking at what skills we have and what skills we would like to improve. We discussed what variety if skills different jobs would use and why these are important. We picked some skills, inside and outside of school, that we would like to develop over Primary 6. Popular ones where, efficient time management, organisation, team work and resilience.
We discussed what a growth and a fixed mindset is and looked at times when we have had a growth or a fixed mindset. We looked at different words and what they meant to us and how these affected our mindsets. Overall, we know that we will be faced with new challenges in Primary 6 but as long as we try our best and approach these challenges with a positive attitude we can be proud of oursleves.
