NPS Visit Report Jan 2010

The National Philatelic Society visited York on the 23rd January for a joint display with our Society, the following is a brief report on the day written by Captain Phil Hyde.

There were over twenty of us there with a good turn out of N.P.S. Members. We started the displays at 1-15 p.m. and in three sessions ten very interesting subjects were presented.

Firstly

Tony Fisher with G.G. Line Engraved, Peter Byrne with York views on postcards and Penny Black reprints in York Castle Museum, David Turner (N.P.S.) with Ocean Penny Post showing covers and documents inspired by Elihu Burritt who campaigned for the Penny Post and rounded off by Rodney Knight (N.P.S.) with "Something Spanish" with a short presentation from pre stamp to more modern special issues including details of the autogyro plane.

Second session

Chris Oliver (N.P.S.) with "Royal Visits to South Africa" Prince of Wales in 1934 and George VI in 1947, David Antill with his New Zealand Universal Penny Postage issue with it's flaws, printings and watermarks,

Susan Oliver with "York Postal History" and Phil Hyde with "Bermuda G VI Key-plates"

The final session featured Mike Lewis with " Darlington Postal History and the development of the Railways" The final display was presented by Steve Ellis with "Trans-Atlantic Sea Post", covers and cancellations from vessels sailing from America to Europe.
