19. Displays at the Castle Museum

With the Society meeting at the Castle Museum it was informed by the curator that it was proposed to create a Post Office in the Victorian Street and perhaps the Society may like to make a contribution.

This was first raised in May 1962 and on the 9th May 1963 it was agreed to produce a permanent display of GB single stamps, from 1840 onwards in the show case within the Post Office.

During 1964, a good number of stamps had been donated, but by 1967 the total number and what they were was not known. An enquiry found that they were in the safe at the Castle Museum.

Surprisingly, the matter lay dormant until the AGM of November 1977 when the matter was raised again. Mr Chapman agreed to investigate and he reported back to the 1978 AGM. “It was apparent that a display would not be featured in the museum.” The stamps were recovered still with no record of how many, and were placed in to the 1979 club auction.
