Mother Teresa was a humanitarian. This means she did things to help out needy people. Her life was devoted to helping the poor, the sick and the helpless. She was raised as a Roman Catholic and decided to devote her life to God at a young age. She joined the Sisters of Loreto at the age of 18 to become a missionary to India.

A year later she started work in Darjeeling, India. She learned the Bengali language and taught at the local school. She took her vows as a nun, taking the name Teresa. She taught for many years in India, becoming the headmistress at a school in Calcutta. When she was 36 years old she felt God was asking her to help the poor of Calcutta, India. She received some basic medical training and then set out to help the sick and needy. This wasn't an easy task in India in 1948. She had very little support and, while trying to feed and help the poorest of the poor, she herself was constantly hungry. She even had to beg for food for the hungry ones she cared for. Soon other women joined her and she formed the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa described them as an organisation to take care of "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the sick, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, and uncared for; people that are shunned by everyone". She accomplished some amazing things. The Missionaries of Charity originally had 13 members. Today they have over 4,000 nuns who care for people just like those Mother Teresa described, all over the world.

It wasn't an easy task to build such a large organisation and to keep the focus on the poorest people. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She worked almost up until her death in 1997, aged 87. Reference: http://www.ducksters.com/biography/mother_teresa.php

Play the Game

Give each group (or person or pair) five non-matching quarter posters and ask them to make a complete poster by giving pieces to other groups, without talking.

The last group should only get the one last piece. Pretend that you've made a mistake counting and there's not enough for them, but say that you're sure that the other students will give pieces to them soon.

To Play 

Each group approaches another group, studies their pieces, and gives them a piece if they have one that matches one of theirs.

They then move away without receiving one back. There is to be no swapping (trading).

Tell the class

'When you have made a complete poster, bring it and read it to me. When we have all the groups finished we will stop and give out the prizes.'

They are to think that the winners are the ones who first collect a whole quote.

No group is to have more than 6 pieces at a time. Tell them: 'If you are caught having more, you must give away all your pieces before receiving any more. I will be doing spot checks to count how many pieces you have.'

The Winners

Are the ones with the fewest pieces in the middle of the game. When the first three groups have brought their completed puzzles to you, tell the class to 'Freeze.' Pretend to do a spot check to make sure no group has more than 6 pieces. You are, however, looking for the winners, the group with the fewest pieces. They are the best givers, and their generosity probably helped the other groups to succeed. If there is no clear winning group, do another spot check a minute or two later. After the game finishes, surprise them by giving them the prize and explain why. Give a bonus prize to the first ones to give a piece to the group that began with only one piece, so observe that group at the start.

Lastly

Have each group hold their poster up and read their quote to the class.
