Give Generously Game 2: The Shoe Game (Reverse 'Rob the Nest')

Preparation

For this game you will need to split the class into teams. Each team will need a tub/bucket/box/hoop or a specific area marked out in the middle for their pile of shoes. You might like to set each group up in different corners of the room or court, but make sure players in each team are an equal distance from the pile of shoes in the middle. 

Begin by getting everyone to take their shoes off and place them in the middle of the room (all shoes from all teams together in the middle). Explain to the students that the object of the game is to fill up others teams tubs with shoes and for their team to end up with no shoes or the smallest amount possible in the time allocated.

You might like to play some fast music for this game and finish when the song finishes, or you can have someone timing an allocated time, or watching to see if a group empties their tub after a certain period of time.

How to Play

One person at a time from each team is the runner, while the others sit in a line behind their tub, awaiting their turn. The first players run to the middle, take one of the shoes and place it (not throw it) into another group’s tub. When they have given away three shoes, they tag the next player's hand, who stands up and continues the game. The first runner now sits at the back of their line. Once all the shoes are gone from the middle, students are able to take shoes (one at a time) from their own tubs and place them into another group's tub. When the music or time finishes, ask everyone to sit in their groups and count how many shoes they have in their tubs. The winning team is the one with the least number of shoes.

Discussion Questions

1. This game is like the game called 'Rob the Nest.' How are they different? (Usually you will be trying to get as many things as you can into your teams tub rather than giving things away.) Did it feel weird? 

2. Is it more fun giving things to others, or do you prefer games where you have to get the most to win? Why?
