Introduction

In this movie you'll meet an inspirational man named Nick. He was born with no arms or legs, and this disability has helped to realise the importance of the way you treat others.

Discussion Questions

1. How does Nick say that we feel when we give something to someone that really makes a difference in their lives. (Indescribable joy and fulfilment)

2. What is the greatest asset that we have to give? (Time.)

3. Why does it often mean so much when people give their time to you? (It shows that you care about them. Everyone needs to feel that someone cares.)

4. What are some ways we can be generous with our time? (talking, helping, babysitting, playing with younger siblings,ringing, texting or emailing someone who needs encouragement, etc.)

5. Who are some people that would really appreciate us spending some time helping them? (Grandparents, old folk who live nearby, mothers with young children, lonely people, kids with disabilities like Nick was.)

Generosity Movie 2: Soul Pancake, Unexpected Generosity  (7-12yr olds, 2 minutes) 

Summary

A short movie of people on the street telling of times when they received unexpected generosity.

Discussion Questions

1. The people in the movie were given something unexpectedly, sometimes by people they knew and sometimes people they didn't know. What effect did the gifts have? (People remembered and it made them smile to think of it again.)

2. Do you think the people who were generous to them realised the pleasure they would give and how long it would be remembered for? (Probably not)

3. When someone is unexpectedly kind to you, what happens as a consequence? (It causes happiness, you get the help you needed, people become more friendly and trusting, it makes a good memory, people feel cared for, people tell others who feel good also etc.)

4. Are people are more likely to help others the way they were helped? (Yes, giving is contagious.)

Generosity Movie 3: A Companion to the Forgotten  (8-15yr olds, 3 minutes)

A wealthy Indian gives up his job to feed the hungry and homeless.

Introduction  

Who has seen a hungry street person? Did you help them? Let's see what the Indian man in this movie does when he saw a starving man.

1. What motivated Narayanan Krishnan to start feeding the poor?

2. What kind of people does he help?

3. What other ways does he help needy people besides feeding them?

5. Why do other members of his society criticise what he is doing?

 

Generosity Movie 4: What if We Could Lead a Life of Excessive Generosity Jeff Shinabarger (10 - 15 yr olds, 11 minutes)

1. What do we have excess of?

2. Jeff said, 'If we choose to live with less, we gain the opportunity to...' what? (give more)

3. This is what Jeff calls a lifestyle of? (excessive generosity.)

4. What gift did Clarence give to Jeff? (the ability to see how much excess was in his life)

Optional Activity

Have the class collect unwanted gift cards. Perhaps advertise it in the school newsletter or website as well.

1. In what ways are you lucky? Write a list of at least ten things you are lucky to have, in order of their importance to you.

2. If a street child in Bangladesh, like the ones Rachael gave biscuits to, could change places with you, would they change the priority order of your list? 

3. What might be at the top of their list? Why? What might be next? Why? What might be last on their list?

4. If you swapped with the street child for a year, and then were able to change back, would it change you? In what ways?
