Exclusive Interview with World Champion 2019 Dr. Sékou Traoré, The world's most influential Superstar in Mining engineering (Red Mud)

Question: What are your recommendations to improve the standards of journals publishing research articles on Chemical Technology?

Answer:

The standard of a journal in Chemical Technology and in other sciences depends on the quality of articles or papers it publishes. The standard of a publication depends on several factors such as the author's talent, the quality of his equipment, the originality and logical structure of the article, its contribution to the progress of the knowledge, or the scope of application of the research theme. Hence, improving standards of journals is a quite complex process. Nowadays and for longtime in the future Impact Factor IF is and will remain a commonly used indicator for evaluating the performance of a scientific journal. Other parameters have been proposed to find a better method reflecting journals contribution to knowledge. However the extent of utilisation still appears to weigh in on IF’s side. To get a critical number of citations, high class articles are required. Attracting high quality articles is a hard task especially for journals with an already low impact factor. In order to improve access to high class articles journals should find high class reviewers who have already published in journals with an international scope. Moreover journals with an English abstract and no English full-text would have a hard time to present articles to an internationally renowned reviewer. The comment above suggests that to improve the standard of journals, one should play on the number of citations by reviewing it upwards and taking into account the number and experience of the reviewers.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve syllabus of Chemical Technology for more creativity, applications and opportunities?

Answer:

The teaching quality or the diffusion of knowledge by competent and motivated scientists in an environment equipped with suitable materials always remains the guagge of a good education. The Laboratory work for small groups of students, the periodic internships in factories and manufactures contribute to the mastery of a field and bring competence to the learners. When such structures are absent, the classical training is done downward and creativity suffers. Although talents still exist and/or can always emerge.

In some Asian countries the lack of industrial units is compensated by the setting up of small pilot plants strictly for internship purposes.

Curricular reforms such as the implementation of the Bachelor-Master's degree-PhD system, when properly conducted, contribute to quality and standardization on the basis of modules, credits, etc. But when they are conducted with maximum laxity, they lead to serious drift and a perversion all along the line. Guinea is in such a scenario. Other aspects such as governance, autonomy and strategic partnerships can make a significant contribution to qualifying training and research. In Guinea in particular, it is essential to review the methods of checking learners' knowledge by introducing rigor essential to the quality of training.

Question: What is Chemical Technology? What are the major branches in Chemical Technology?

Answer:

Chemistry in general has the feature of being a science and at the same time placing itself at the heart of technologies, which results in the existence of a leading industry that intervenes widely, in all key downstream sectors of the economy.

Chemical Technology or Chemical Engineering is the study of processes in the production of the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Nowadays the role of Chemical Technology is to develop new products and to design processes while reducing costs, increasing production, and improving the quality.

To define this area, in "The Handbook of Chemical Engineering," 1901, George E. Davis uses an approach in which chemical engineers and mechanical engineers form teams to manufacture large-scale products. In 1938 Cathala and Letort defined Chemical Engineering as the science of engineering designed to calculate and operate, on an industrial scale, equipment in which physical or chemical transformations take place. The application to other fields of the chemical engineering methodology has led to the creation of a serie of epigoneous Engineerings: agribusiness engineering, biochemical engineering, sanitary engineering, etc.; leading to an awareness that these principles applied to any phenomenon of transformation of matter.

From this generalization is born a discipline: the Process engineering that determines the feasibility of a process and proposes the appropriate technical solutions making it possible to extrapolate it on an industrial scale. Process Engineering is therefore a broader term covering the study of material and energy transformation processes in all chemical industries and all process industries.

Question: What are your recommendations to frame guidelines on funding of research projects on Chemical Technology?

Answer:

For sustainable funding of research in Chemical Technology or in other branches there are prerequisites. First of all the decision makers at the highest level must be aware of the importance of research. Such an awareness leads to:

- Highlighting the key role of research in policy documents, and defining a consistent strategy of implementation.

- Structuring research resources in teams, groups, etc. These units are the linchpin of research for which funding is needed.

A wide range of funding alternatives is required for different stages of the research and innovation in Chemical Technology or in any other field of knowledge. Generally authors highlight the known conceptual models: public funding, venture capital, angel investors, corporate funding. These concepts are formulated differently in other approaches emphasizing partnerships, co-funding and multi-disciplinary arrangements. The most important is to focus on excellent science, industrial competitiveness and tackling societal challenges. Another key aspect is to ensure context-driven, efficient and effective utilisation of scarce resources

Nowadays in Guinea and in most countries south of Sahara, public funding remains a prominent source for research. Conversely, this is mostly to pay salaries and wages; funding for operational research must be as much a priority as salaries and wages.

Question: How can universities produce revolutionary PhD and Post Doc thesis and dissertations on Chemical Technology? What are your recommendations to improve the academic standards?

Answer:

The all depends on the quality of the Bachelor background, on the research framework. A solid background in laboratory works, developing the students ability to imagine and try their own methods, are perquisites for students to perform a high level PhD and Postdoc thesis. PhD and Postdoc thesis reflect the quality of the research done.

Question: What are your views on Bauxite Industry in Guinea and Value Opportunities of the Resulting Red Mud as Residue for Chemical and Civil Engineering Purposes?

Answer:

Guinea requires sound resource policies to strengthen sector governance and enable economic growth. To take full advantage of the enormous mineral potential in general and bauxite in particular, Guinea must review its strategy. When the State has not enough capital to take a large share of the investment, the economic benefits of the bauxite mines and alumina industry will remain insignificant. In 2010 a Rio Tinto top manager told me clearly : if this investment trend continues, your country will not experience any positive spin-off from the Project. From 1997 till today, you have not paid anything to honor your 25% participation. The prominence of this sector to the socio-economic development of Guinea requires the development of a specific bauxite and alumina policy that is dynamic, taking into consideration the changing needs of the industry in the framework of the inland and worldwide economic environments.

The best approach for the successful valorization of bauxite and other minerals, Guinea must enter into a new scheme that breaks down as follows:

- Improve the formation of human capital by straightening education all along the line

- Investing methodologically in the primary sector and railways transport

- Increasing energy production up to 3-5 MWh.

Such a scheme will lead in the medium term to an accumulation of financial capital allowing a greater participation of the State. This will lead to the establishment of the complete extraction-conversion chain.

Otherwise with the mining strategy nowadays, instead of Guinea being a geological scandal, the country risks becoming simply a scandal.

As it is ostensible red mud is a highly complex material that differs due to the different bauxites used and the different process parameters. Therefore red mud should be regarded as a group of materials, having particular characteristics, such as: produced during bauxite refining; highly alkaline; mainly composed of iron oxides having a variety of elements and mineralogical phases; relatively high specific surface; fine particle size distribution. One of the most important ways of reducing the negative environmental impacts of the alumina industry is environmentally sustainable discharge and storage of digestion residue. Until now several applications of red mud have been studied. In general all these applications concern the use of red mud in relatively small amounts while the current need is safe disposal of red mud and its bulk utilization.

Question: How can students seek job and career opportunities in Chemical Technology?

Answer:

Students are provided comprehensive knowledge of operations and development carried out in chemical plants as well as the equipment which are used for processing.

In the context of unemployment and hard competition for jobs, students need to have good analytical and evaluative skills with good knowledge of interpreting the data. Candidates who have the ability to construct new ideas for applying it in different engineering and businesses are considered apt to compete on the job market. The teaching program in Chemical Engineering/Technology should be designed in a manner in which students are acquainted with the application and principles of Processes in general creating a link with engineering for applying them in matters related to use and production of chemical commodities and goods for a large scope of utilization.

Question: What job titles are available in Chemical Technology?

Answer:

At this point of view, there is not a big difference with other branches of the industry.

Question: Which are Typical employers in Chemical Technology?

Answer

It depends on the availability of raw materials, of energy and other infrastructure in a region or in a country. Generally these factors dictate the type of chemical industry to be developed. In generalChemical Engineers are employed in industrial units and in the academic sector such as the basic chemical industry the manufactures of large volumes of products with low added value (mineral acids, bases and mineral salts), the building materials industry, the food industry, and pharmaceutical products seem to be big job providers.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class research article in Chemical Technology? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer

A critical requirement of a publication is to present the paper in enough detail so that a reader can follow the reasoning and confirm the resulting conclusions. Moreover, an author should be willing to defend the paper against criticism, therefore he should have available for later review the data used and key detail about the experimental method.

Nowadays the vast majority of papers published in scientific journals today follow a simple structure. With some variations, they use an “Introduction, Material and Methods, Results and Discussion” format. This format seems to be durable This format seems to faithfully reflect scientific work and, if necessary, to verify its approach and conclusion.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class case report in Chemical Technology? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer

First the author should perform a complete preparation of data, which means previous good data collection on all aspects of the case. Then he should write with originality. Even if an author is confident in his own aptitude, he needs to consult expert for checking. The author should provide enough detail on the case. Because it is the detail that marks the specificity of the reported case.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class review in Chemical Technology? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer

An important requirement is to master widely the subject in the time. The next step is to present the paper in sufficient detail so that a reader can follow the reasoning presented and validate the resulting conclusions. Moreover, an author should be willing to protect the paper against criticism, therefore he should have available for later review the data used and key detail about the experimental method.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve employment and scope in Chemical Technology?

Answer:

Every chemical industry uses raw materials and energy. This industry is the most voracious with regard to energy consomption. Any change of the price of energy has immediate and multiple impacts on employment in this sector. The cost of production increases and has an impact on the cost of finished products that become more expensive. In addition, the use of fossil fuels leads to the release of greenhouse gases that have an impact on water resources; this essential commodity for any industry. To improve employment in this sector, it is therefore necessary to develop renewable energies. Favor the circular economy over the linear economy to save raw materials and solve the problem of residues.

Question: Which major challenges do you see to establish Guinea as world leader in Chemical Technology?

Answer:

Today and through the ages, knowledge and innovation have always been the engines of sustainable development and growth, and the universities are crucial institutions towards achieving the goals set out by governments and policy makers. In countries with a high industrialization level, the balance between knowledge and resources is shifting so far towards the former that knowledge has become the most important factor determining the standard of living. The Knowledge Society relies on the quality of human capital, education, research and innovation policies as key to boost growth. If Guinea wants to compete in the global knowledge society and becomes a leader in Chemical Engineering, the country must also invest more in human capital. Skills, knowledge and competences are increasingly seen as crucial prerequisites for the productivity and competitiveness of the economy in the modern world. As wrote P. Drucker “The next society will be a knowledge society. Knowledge will be its key resource and knowledge workers will be the dominant group in its workforce”

In parallel with the education and the qualification of the human capital, Guinea should necessarily build an energy capacity proportional to the needs of a consequent metallurgical industry, about 3 GW. It needs an operational railway and port infrastructure of about 3000 Km.

Therefore, it is important to reduce the intense mining activity, without any real added value, and to invest methodically in the primary sector to gradually build up sound financial capital. This sector was the spearhead of its exports in the colonial period.

The current strategy will never lead to the industrialization of the country. In 2010 a senior Manager of Rio Tinto/Simfer told me: At this rate your country will not get any benefit from this project. Because to date it has not honored 1% of his share of financial investment.

If a foreign Company has to produce electricity, set up a railway network and a port infrastructure, the State should not expect any financial benefits of a project.

Value opportunities of the red mud

The global inventory of bauxite residue stored on land currently is estimated to be over 2.7 billion tonnes, with an annual growth rate of over 120 million tonnes. Regardless of over 50 years of research on the subject, little evidence exists of any significant utilization of bauxite residue at any time. Nowadats there are two broad utilization classes for the red mud that have the potential to create value. These are: (i) construction materials and chemicals; (ii) environmental and agronomic use and (iii) metallurgical applications.

- Construction and chemical applications : includes the following application areas: Civil and Building Construction, Catalyst and Catalyst Support or Adsorbent, and Ceramics, Plastics, Coatings or Pigments.

- Environmental and agronomic applications : soil remediation, amendements, adsorbents, etc

- Metallurgical Applications, includes the following areas: Recovery of Major Metals, Steel Making and Slag Additive, and Recovery of Minor Metals. The metallurgical applications in particular illustrate utilization drivers based on overly simplistic interpretations of metal value and processing costs.

Conclusion

The conversion of the 2/3 of the world bauxite reserves into alumina in Guinea or elsewhere will produce a huge volume of red mud with serious environment concerns. However this amount of residue may be processed into valuable products suitable for application in engineering sectors. To make a significant impact on the amount of residue stored, applications that will consume large quantities of residue on an ongoing basis are required. The performance of residue in any particular application must be competitive with the alternatives in relation to quality, cost and risk. The overall lack of progress on utilization suggests that no strong economic case has been established to date. For any given application, it must to be demonstrated that the risk associated with it is less than the risk associated with continued storage.
