Exclusive Interview with World Champion 2019 Dr. Sylvain Beourou, The world's most influential Superstar in Malariology (Antiplasmodial Activity)

Question: What are your recommendations to improve the standards of journals publishing research articles on Parasitology?

Answer: The managers of newspapers who publish in parasitology must, with the biologists, discuss and improve together the questions of standards.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve syllabus of Parasitology for more creativity, applications and opportunities?

Answer:- Biologists who innovate in parasitology research should be encouraged,

- Establish funding in Parasitology, accessible to researchers in the South.

Question: What is Parasitology? What are the major branches in Parasitology?

Answer:Parasitology is the branch of biology that studies parasites, their characteristics, their way of life and parasitic diseases caused by them.Parasitology is major divided into vegetal parasitology and animal parasitology, which are the study of parasites and parasitic diseases of plants and animals, respectively.

Question: What are your recommendations to frame guidelines on funding of research projects on Parasitology?

Answer: - As I announced earlier, funding must be made available to researchers in developing countries.

- In the commissions for the allocation of project funding, biologists from southern countries must be included.

Question: How can universities produce revolutionary PhD and Post Doc thesis and dissertations on Parasitology? What are your recommendations to improve the academic standards?

Answer:We must enrich parasitology with innovative research themes. Awarding distinctions to deserving researchers, based on established standards.

Question: What are your views on Propagation in culture of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes clinical isolates and antiplasmodial activity of two medicinal plant extracts on parasitic growth?

Answer: Most of the antimalarial molecules discovered are oriented towards the destruction of non-infective forms for the mosquito, schizont forms and ring forms. Gametocytes represent the infectious forms involved in the transmission of malaria. They must be put at the heart of the search to eradicate malaria. Develop active molecules on gametocytes. To do this, it is necessary first to propagate in vitro culture gametocytes in laboratories in southern countries where malaria is endemic. This research theme is very important for the research team that I head at the Institut Pasteur of Côte d'Ivoire.

Question: How can students seek job and career opportunities in Parasitology?

Answer: Have a job and career opportunities in parasitology, you must first train and have love for parasitology. After that, you have to apply for projects or calls for applications.

Question: What job titles are available in Parasitology?

Answer: You can be a biotechnologist, a teacher, or a researcher.

Question: Which are Typical employers in Parasitology?

Answer: Typical employers in parasitology are hospital laboratories, research center laboratories, university laboratories and private medical analysis laboratories.

Question: Please provide comprehensive list of journals in Parasitology?

Answer: Sorry, I am not able to quote them because I am not allowed. However, there are good and bad journals in parasitology. So be careful when submitting a manuscript.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class research article in Parasitology? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer: Have good results and you must write in peer-reviewed journals or impact factor journals. However, it is especially important to write in specialty journals in parasitology.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class case report in Parasitology? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer: Above all, you have to master the writing methodology and adapt to the global context.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class review in Parasitology? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer: Have good primary results and you must write in peer-reviewed journals or impact factor journals. However, it is especially important to write in specialty journals in parasitology.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve employment and scope in Parasitology?

Answer: To improve employment, it is necessary to update laboratory equipment, have easy accessibility of laboratory inputs, to have internet at lower cost in developing countries, to have continuous electricity, to train and to reinforce the capacities of biotechnologists regularly. For the scope of parasitology, the networks of parasitological biologists must be valued, the number of annual scientific congresses must be increased.

Question: Please mention research highlights of your research on Propagation in culture of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes clinical isolates and antiplasmodial activity of two medicinal plant extracts on parasitic growth?

Answer: The results obtained from this research theme and presented at scientific conferences, have earned us collaboration and encouragement. The published article is referenced in the work of other researchers and uploaded online regularly. By this theme, I was distinguished by World Championship 2019. We want to proceed soon to purify Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes and carry out viability tests on them.

Question: Which major challenges do you see to establish Côte d’Ivoire as world leader in Parasitology?

Answer: Parasitology researchers must respond to all global meetings. To be present at important scientific congresses. For this, benefit from the help of competent authorities and line ministries. Research Institutes and Universities must respond to calls for projects and scientific papers. Set up a network of parasitologists and meet at least once a year. Get closer to the people to meet their needs. Become familiar with advanced equipment in our laboratories to meet the challenges of the moment. We must promote research and make ourselves known by our scientific publications.

Question: Anyother thing, you would like to share?

Answer: I would like to invite my dear colleagues to more collaboration to promote research and share experiences. I thank the management of the Pasteur Institute of Côte d'Ivoire at the head of Professor DOSSO Mireille for the necessary equipment made available to us to achieve the objectives. The distinction goes to my research team, to the Institution where I work (Institut Pasteur of Côte d'Ivoire), to my superiors, Côte d'Ivoire and Africa.

Perspective of development of research in progress

The search for new molecules follows the emergence of resistance to the usual antimalarials, including therapeutic combinations based on artemisinin derivatives (ACT). The need to search for natural molecules is an alternative to treat malaria in all its forms and to allow the vast majority of the population to have access to effective medicines at a lower cost. The research carried out under this project concerns medicinal plants from the Ivorian pharmacopoeia whose extracts will be evaluated on the parasite biomass. The method of extraction and the characterization of the active principles of these plants is essential to enhance their value.

Various programs will then be developed on this theme, in particular those on:

- Modeling an extraction method that better concentrates the active principles of these plants

-Characterization of molecules by high performance liquid chromatography

- Continue work on in vitro culture propagation of gametocytes for viability testing

- Formulation of an improved traditional medicine in collaboration with galenic researchers

The nutrition-infection relationships are the source of many controversies that need to be clarified through studies for the well-being of population health. Indeed, during infectious diseases, including malaria, there is a disruption of the nutritional needs of the host, creating a state of undernutrition of the subject, associated with a physiological imbalance. This situation contributes to the weakening of the immune, protein-energy and antioxidant functions of which these molecules are responsible, further aggravating the state of health of the subject. It should not be overlooked that these micronutrients are sometimes used by the parasite to survive and ensure its metabolism within the host organism. As such, there is competition for the use of these micronutrients, both for the nutritional needs of the host and for the metabolism needs of pathogenic organisms. Thus, the question of the bioavailability of these molecules with regard to our traditional dishes during infectiousdiseases deserves more investigation to the effect of minimizing the losses of these molecules to the detriment of the pathogenic agent, and in favor of the host organism.

In collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and under the scientific coordination of Professor DJAMAN A. Joseph, it will be:

-Study the mode of interaction between the nutritional needs of the host and those of the pathogen

- Study the mechanism of action by which the pathogen would use these molecules to the detriment of the host?

- Establish the relationship between nutritional intake, nutritional needs of the host and those of pathogenic organisms to define the benefit-risk factor of nutritional intake during malaria.
