Exclusive Interview with World Champion 2019 Kavita, Nester Muthoni, The world's most influential Superstar in Environmental Sciences (Sustainable Rural Development)

Question: What are your recommendations to improve the standards of journals publishing research articles on Library Science?

Answer:

All journal articles should be refereed by at least one academic authority (professional) from the country of origin to ensure the authenticity of the information.

Question: What are your recommendations to improve syllabus of Library Science for more creativity, applications and opportunities?

Answer:

(1) Practical projects whereundergraduate students are made to come up with simple but practicable models or frameworks on how to set up a library for specific clientele, for example;

· A special library that serves an industry

· A government department library e.g. Ministry of Agriculture, Health, e.t.c.

· A Kindergarten library- as part of a public library or in a school.

· A public Library

· A School library

· An Academic library (University library)

· A national library (national depository) inter alia

N.B.: This can be done after students’ attachments to the libraries of their choice depending on their specialization. The student should be able to ably visualize the physical library building including the fittings, library processes right from Acquisitions of allinformation resources and be able to show how they are processed and disseminated to the clientele. They should be able to explain about the budget allocation and also to whom the librarian is answerable to. The rationale behind this thought is that Kenyan graduates find themselves in a predicament when they are variously sent out to plan and set up libraries on their own.

(2) They should be made to think of innovative ways of how to run a library that is not automated in any way. This would assist them to cope with situations where they have to set up services in remote areas.

Question: What is Library Science? What are the major branches in Library Science?

Answer:

Library Scienceentails the study of the principles and practice of Library technical processes as well as its administration and management. It is variously referred to as Library and Information Studies, Library and information science.

There are several branches of Library Science which include the provision of Library and information services in an Academic, School, Special, National and Public libraries which serve the public including the children and users with special needs (visually impaired the deaf and physically disabled, home bound e.t.c.).

Question: What are your recommendations to frame guidelines on funding of research projects on Library Science?

Answer:

Research funding particularly in the developing countries would be useful in the area of;

· Information literacy of diverse clientele i.e. assessing the ability of users in the way they identify their respective information needs, locate information, and evaluate it for use in their day to day ventures.

· Library staff capacity building in tandem with the evolving use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs).

· The problems and prospects of adopting electronic information resources in academic libraries in developing countries.

· Preservation and dissemination of indigenous knowledge particularly in agriculture, health sciences, art and craft inter alia.

· The possibility of training professionals e.g. doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachersagriculturalists e.t.c. as special and embedded librarians to articulately serve their contemporaries in their respective fields, especially in the research organisations and academic institutions.

Question: How can universities produce revolutionary PhD and Post Doc thesis and dissertations on Library Science? What are your recommendations to improve the academic standards?

Answer:

First and foremost, the University Faculty or School need to;

· Emphasise the need to ensure that their respective staff are competent and available to guide students through their research process.

· The lecturers should not be overwhelmed with other responsibilities so as to be able to have adequate time with the students

· Avoid duplication of research by teaching students on how to find out whether their topic has been done in other local universities – by scheming through other universities’ repositories

· Ensure that plagiarism is curbed by the use of anti plagiarism software such as “turn it in”.

· Ensure that the research findings would be useful nationally and internationally.

Question: How can students seek job and career opportunities in Library Science?

Answer:

They can offer to do voluntary service for various employers where they would prove their worth in the organization.

· The Faculty or School of Information Science need to sensitise various potential employers on the need of having a library and information department, to be run by a knowledge manager.

Question: What job titles are available in Library Science?

Answer:

· University Librarian/ College Librarian

· Knowledge Manager in a company

· School Librarian

· Embedded Librarian in an academic institution or in a research organization

· Systems Librarian

· Circulation Librarian

· Reference Librarian

· Research Librarian

· Special Needs Librarian

· Acquisitions Librarian

· Children’ Librarian

· Assistant Librarian

· Senior Assistant Librarian

· Library Assistants

· Senior Library Assistant

· Library Attendant

Question: Which are typical employers in Library Science?

Answer

· National Government – in schools, colleges, universities, hospitals inter alia

· Private institutions, companies, national and international organizations

Question: Please provide comprehensive list of journals in Library Science?

Answer

· Journal of Library and Information Sciences

· Review of the literature on the subject under study

· Methodology

· Research design

· Sampling technique

· Data Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation

· Research discussions and Summary of the Findings

· Recommendations

· Conclusion

· References used in the article

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class case report in Library Science? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer

Introduction

  • Identify the key problems and issues in the library case study.

  • Present the background information, relevant facts, and the most important issues.

· Indicate the problems in the case study.

Alternatives

  • Outline and discuss the possible alternatives

Proposed Solution

  • Provide one specific and realistic solution

  • Explain why this solution was chosen

  • Determine and discuss specific strategies for accomplishing the proposed solution.

Question: What are your recommendations to write a world class review in Library Science? What essential components and factors must be there?

Answer

Be fully conversant with the aspect of the library science you are writing the review article on.

· Define the topic and Audience

· Write a general introduction

· Search and Re-search the Literature on the topic and take notes while reading

· Write the review consistently and critically ensuring that you are up-to-date but inclusive of earlier articles where need be.

· Be logical in structure and remain focused

· Get feedback from colleagues

· List all the references

Question: What are your recommendations to improve employment and scope in Library Science?

Answer:

Kenya is comparatively better than many African countries in the provision of library and information services. Currently, the Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) has 62 Branch libraries spread throughout the Republic. However, 14 out of the 47 Counties do not have access to library services. Although the secondary schools have libraries, quite a large proportion has rudiments of libraries that are not professionally run. Except for private primary schools, most public primary schools have handfuls of books locked up in class cupboards. At least the college libraries are up and running but have a long way to go with automation. The university libraries are in sync with the information technology and are useful as information providers to the university public. A university cannot be chartered unless it has a functional university library.

With the above backdrop, there is a wide gap in terms of library services to the public as well as schools. I believe the employment situation would change tremendously if the Kenya government was to ensure that all Counties and schools are well endowed with formal library services regardless of their location – urban or remote villages.

Question: Which major challenges do you see to establish Kenya as world leader in Library Science?

Answer:

The main challenges include;

· Inadequate number of trained Library Science graduates because not all universities in Kenya offer this course

· The course is not well marketed to potential students and parents. Not many seem to know what the course entails in terms of career advancement

· Unlike other scientific areas, minimal attention is given to the profession in terms of research

Question: Any other thing, you would like to share?

Answer:

The future of Library science profession lies on purposeful training of Library and information science professionals as well as promotion of library and information services. Without functional library and information services in all sectors of life, the citizenry will lack the essential nourishment in terms of knowledge which is crucial fornational innovation and socio-economic development.
