Research Experience

I have been in the research for over 30 years. My area of research has been on small grain cereals and oil-seed crops. I have also been involved in advisory services covering other crops within mandate

regions of the center( e.g. Maize, sweet potatoes, cassava, horticultural crops among others). I have also been involved in out-reach services and surveys. I have been able to interact with farmers from all spheres of life, through which I have been able Identify various diseases in different crops and tried to address them. These farmers need advice and support to improve their farming, because they depend on these crops for subsistence and earn a living. I have worked with individual and women group farmers on management of seed-borne diseases in common beans and soybeans using the sorting and selection techniques. Currently I am in- charge of acquisition of global germplasm for field screening against Ug99 at Njoro, and also the Kenya’s Focal Person on surveys and surveillance of wheat rusts under Delivering Genetic Gain in Wheat (DGGW) Project funded by Bill &Melinda Gates and Department for International Development (DfID) through Cornell University, USA. I am also PI_Kenya of Sustainable Crop Production Research For International Development (SCPRID) project funded by Biotechnology for Biological Science Research Council (BBSRC) and (DfID), working on yellow (stripe) rust of wheat. I have contributed to the release of more than 15 wheat varieties with adult plant resistance (APR) to stem rust race Ug99 for commercial production and actively involved in fungicide efficacy trials funded by International and local agro‐ chemical companies. I have coordinated research projects funded by CIMMYT, ICARDA, Global Rust Initiative (GRI), African Rural Policy Analysis Network (ARPAN), Winrock International, IDRC, and Danida. I am an outstanding African Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) alumnus and a fellow of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) and was attached to the International laboratory (BecA Hub, ILRI, Kenya) where I completed a research project on ‘Characterization of wheat stem rust races in Kenya including race Ug99 and its variants as part of my PhD study. I have worked on seed mycology at the Danish Seed Health Center (DSHC), on a research project ‘Fungal Diseases Associated with Soybean Seeds in Kenya’. I am a member of the Kenya Women in Agricultural Research and Development Kenya Chapter (KeAward), American Phytopathological Society (APS) and Crop Science Society of America(CSSA),Borlaug Global Rust Initiative( BGRI) and founder member of Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture and Development (KEPAWAE).I have written, published several technical reports, authored/co-authored journal papers, and contributed to book chapters and book editing.I have won a number of awards including the 2015 Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI) Gene Stewardship Award, Sydney, Australia. I am also a mentor of a number of both female and male university students (Msc & PhD).
