What is Clinical Studies ?
Clinical trials are research studies performed in people that are aimed at evaluating a medical, surgical, or behavioral intervention. They are the primary way that researchers find out if a new treatment, like a new drug or diet or medical device (for example, a pacemaker) is safe and effective in people.
What is Genetic Engineering ?
Genetic engineering is the process of using technology to change the genetic makeup of an organism - be it an animal, plant or a bacterium. Recombinant DNA technology was first developed in the early 1970s, and the first genetic engineering company, Genentech, was founded in 1976. Genetic engineering is the deliberate, controlled manipulation of the genes in an organism, with the intent of making that organism better in some way.

What are the major branches in Genetic Engineering?
Analytical Genetic Engineering, Applied Genetic Engineering and Chemical Genetic Engineering are the major branches in Genetic Engineering.
What is Analytical Genetic Engineering ?
This is the research branch of genetic engineering in which virtual genetic models are created using computer software. Various computer programs are used to theoretically study the implications of various genetic engineering activities if they are to be carried out in practice.
What is Applied Genetic Engineering ?
Applied genetic engineering, as the name suggests, is that field of genetic engineering which pertains to practical application of genetic engineering tools to manipulate the genes of living organisms for making genetic copies of them or to introduce certain different characteristics in them that are not usual for the subjects. The first instance is what we typically refer to as cloning and the second instance refers to the premises of transgenesis.
What is Chemical Genetic Engineering ?
Chemical genetic engineering can be called the grass root level of applied genetic engineering as it deals with separating, classifying and graphing genes to prepare them for applied genetic engineering activities and experiments. Chemical genetic engineering includes genetic mapping, studying genetic interaction and genetic coding. In genetic mapping, DNA fragments are assigned to individual chromosomes and thus, a genetic map is created after the complete DNA sequencing of a subject is done.
Dr. Osayande Osaretin Julie from Belgium is World Champion - 2018 in Clinical
Studies (Genetic Engineering)
World Champion Osayande Osaretin Julie was born on July 15, 1976 in Benin City, Nigeria. She studied Biochemistry at the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria where she graduated with second class honors, upper division in the 1996/97 academic session. She obtained a Master's in Molecular Biology at the Free University Brussels, in Belgium thereafter, she received a scholarship to pursue a PhD degree at the same University in a thesis titled “Evolution of siderophore receptors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa”.
Ghysels et al. 2004 identified an alternative receptor P. aeruginosa uses to assimilate iron bound to its siderophore (pyoverdine), and at the time of identification, a fragment (562 bp) of this alternative receptor gene called fpvB was amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction, (PCR). The aim of her thesis , amongst others, was to, using PCR to amplify about 2.5 kb size fragment of this gene (the fpvB gene is about 2.5 kb in the P. aeruginosa PAO1) in other clinical and environmental strains of P. aeruginosa. A collection of strains from the Woluwe River was used for this purpose (Pirnay et al. 2005) . Gene cloning procedures were used in the past for the characterisation of the complete ferripyoverdine receptor gene sequences in P. aeruginosa strains (Poole et.al. 1993), however, these procedures are time consuming. To further simplify this gene identification process, Osayande J.O. designed a series of external and internal primers to amplify and sequence the complete ferripyoverdine receptor gene sequences of the strains under study for the first time using PCR and during the process of amplification , variant forms of the siderophore receptor genes were presented (Osayande J.O., 2010).
Furthermore, during her thesis at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital, water samples from the NorthSea were analyzed for the presence of P. aeruginosa. From the experimental work carried out by Osayande , J.O. on these water samples, a probable P. aeruginosa strain was identified for the first time in the NorthSea in Belgium.
In addition to identifying this strain using the VITEK biomerieux method of bacterial identification, she also observed that the VITEK machine may serve as a tool for other scientific purpose other than for mere bacterial identification.
In the past , she had worked on Hibiscus rosasinensis anthocyanin and its role in the prevention of carbon tetrachloride-induced liver toxicity in the rat. Currently, she is interested in researches involving HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.
