Highlights of the research article titled: Perceived Health Effects of Charcoal Production among Rural Dwellers of Derived Savannah Zone of Nigeria Journal of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, 7(1): 127-133

The article was an original research from a Ph.D thesis carried out in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in the year 2014 and supervised by Prof. Stella Odebode.

The research reviewed that globally, the use of energy in form of biomass and biofuel such as fire wood, charcoal, petroleum, kerosene and gas are becoming competitive depending on the level of development of each Nation. High dependence on the production and use of charcoal has resulted in various health hazards during production (Bailis, et al 2005). Many people suffer from one ailment or the other ranging from acute to chronic diseases such as head ache, respiratory diseases, cough, sputum production, dyspnea, and hemoptysis as a result of their involvement in charcoal production (UNDP, 2005). Charcoal production therefore creates serious concern for health, agricultural production, environmental sustainability and food security in the near future.

The study made use of One hundred and fifty nine respondents selected through multi stage sampling technique in major charcoal producing communities. Data was collected through the use of structured interview schedule and focus group discussion (FGD).

The results shows that most of the charcoal producers were Male who are in there active age with little educational background. However, as married individuals, the need to feed their households made them to take charcoal production as a good alternative source of income.

From the 30 perceptional statements on health effects of charcoal production to the rural dwellers, respiratory disease recorded a significant percentage. Respiratory disease has been attested to by most of the charcoal producers especially during monitoring of charcoal kiln which result into other secondary ailments such headache. Upon this consequences, the production of charcoal still increases in Nigeria. Focus group discussion further revealed that the occurrence of the disease may reduce future productivity in agricultural production. 2 Therefore, it was recommended that awareness campaign on health consequences of charcoal production should be promoted.
