Abstract
L- Pyro Glutamic acid (LPGA), an organic nonlinear optical crystal was grown by conventional slow evaporation method at ambient temperature. The structural properties of grown crystal have been investigated by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction studies. The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectrum studies were used to affirm the functional group of the grown crystal. Using UV–VIS–NIR spectrum studies, the lower cut-off wavelength and optical band gap of LPGA were found to be 243nm and 2ev respectively. Mechanical strength was estimated using the Vickers microhardness tester. Thermal analysis indicate that the grown LPGA crystal is stable up to 182°C. The photoluminescence study suggests that the presence of defects in the grown crystal due to increase of Stokes shift and vibrational energy relaxation phenomena. The elemental composition of the grown crystal is confirmed by EDAX studies. Surface morphology of the crystal is analyzed by SEM analysis. The Kurtz powder test shows the second harmonic generation efficiency of LPGA is 0.8% that of KDP crystal. Antibacterial activity was carried out against Gram positive (Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative bacterial strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus oralis).
