Jacobsdal Pinotage 2006

Red with pinkish rim. Very fruity on the nose, with hints of oak. On the palate it rewards with generous dark fruit, supple tannins and just a hint of spicyness. Very long alcoholic tail and lingering tannins, and even a hint of savoury meatiness at the end. A wine to sit and ponder on, its extremely long tail revealing ever more of its character as the tail runs out.

PS - After letting the remainder of this stand for a few days and having a re-taste, the fruitiness of this was even more profound, and the tannins softer. It became quite clear that Cornelis and Hannes Dumas are Pinotage specialists (they ONLY produce Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon as far as I know). This comes very close to the epitome of what a Pinotage should be. I decided to bump the rating up from 4/5 to 4.5/5. It turned out to be one of the easiest drinking Pinotages around after having AMPLE time to breathe!.

Tasted: January 2010

Price when bought: R59

John Platter rating: 4/5

My rating: 4.5/5 (and worth way more than it's lowish price!)
