TED Talk Translation

Hours: 30 mins per minute of Ted Talk translated

# of Volunteers: Anyone can participate!

Responsibilities: Translating TED Talks so that they are more accessible to all viewers, including those that have hearing impairments.

Notes:

  • We are allowing you to complete videos UP TO 30 MINUTES long.

    • This means you can do one 30 minute long video, or multiple videos that add up to 30 minutes.

    • Doing 30 minutes worth of videos will allow you to earn 15 hours, and this is the maximum amount of hours you can receive.

  • You CANNOT make English subtitles for an English video as that is not translation and those videos already have English subtitles.

    • You are watching a video in ENGLISH and translating/typing it into A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE.

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPLETE THE EVENT:

  1. Create an account through Google, and verify your account by clicking the “verify” button on the verification email.

  2. After creating your account, you should be redirected to a page with an “Apply now” button. If you click that, it will take you to a page with a video and the application under it. There is also a short quiz on the contents of the video to make sure that you know how to translate or transcribe the TED Talks. Watch the video, fill out the application, and fill out the short quiz.

  3. After submitting your application, it should send you an email saying that your application has been approved. Follow the instructions provided in this email.

  4. When you click the link included in the first step of the instructions of the email, you should be redirected to the Ted Amara dashboard.

  5. Click the “Join Via TED” link.

    1. Make sure that you create the Amara account via the link provided NOT by going to the Amara website and creating the account: IT WILL NOT WORK THIS WAY.

  6. After clicking the link, you should be on a page (the Ted Amara Dashboard page) with a hyperlink that says “Select the languages you can caption or translate”. Click on this and specify which languages you would like to translate in.

  7. Click browse all videos to find videos that you can transcribe or translate. Or, go to the task tab and search for any tasks that involve the language you would like to translate or transcribe.

  8. Once you find a task you would like to complete, click the arrow next to it, and then click the “start now” button.

  9. This should take you to a subtitle editor. This page includes the keyboard controls you need to play and pause the video, skip back in the video, or insert a line break in the subtitles. You can click the tool icon to go through a tutorial on how to work this software.

  10. You can begin the subtitling process by typing in the respective subtitles in the center of the screen for the allotted time period. The English subtitles are offered on the side of the screen to help you if you are translating to another language.

    1. You might need to download the keyboard if you are translating into another language. If so, find a tutorial online that tells you how to download the keyboard for your specific device.

  11. You can either save your draft, or click the “Start Syncing” button once you are finished.

  12. Fill out the google form on the classroom assignment to get credit for the event. The picture and video attached below are examples for what we expect to be uploaded to the google form.

    1. A video of you scrolling through your translations (make sure to move slow enough so we can see the timestamps) AND

    2. A screenshot of the final status of your Ted Talk (it should say “Needs Review” next to the language that you translated into)
