CHASE AND SANBORN (aka SPIKE JONES SHOW or FRANCES LANGFORD SHOW)

In July and August 1945, the Chase and Sanborn show broadcast 2 shows from Santa Monica, 1 from Corona and 1 from Pasadena. The shows are available at

http://www.archive.org/details/SpikeJones

The logs from Jerry H and to a lesser extent radiogoldindex show:

45-07-29 Santa Monica

45-08-05 Corona (radiogold doesn't list a city for this date)

45-08-12 Santa Monica (radiogold says it may be 7-29)

45-08-19 Pasadena

I believe that the two Santa Monica shows have had their dates switched at some point. However if that is true then either (1) the wrong cities were announced at the end of the shows or (2) the logs have the Corona and Pasadena dates switched. The simplest explanation is the logs have Corona and Pasadena switched, but I can't confirm that other than by deduction. I believe the shows are

45-07-29 Santa Monica (first song - Sunny Side of the Street)

45-08-05 Pasadena

45-08-12 Santa Monica (first song - There I've Said It Again)

45-08-19 Corona

Santa Monica #1 (listed as 7/29 but I think it is 8/12)

First Song - There I've Said It Again

at 26:10 refers to "as we stand on the threshold of peace."

at 26:45 refers to "the war in which we've just triumphed. We won this war not because we're stronger.."

Note: Atomic weapons were dropped on Japan on Aug. 6th and Aug. 9th. Announcement to the world made by Truman on Aug. 9th. Japan surrendered Aug. 15th.

End of show says next week's show is at Corona

Santa Monica #2 (listed as 8/12 but I think it is 7/29)

First Song - Sunny Side of the Street

Reference at 2:50 to "looking forward to Wednesday, August 1st."

Reference at 10:10 to the movie G.I. Joe premiering in Albuqurque "about 10 days ago." The Story of GI Joe had premiered in Albuquerque on July 12,1945 according to the book 'Ernie Pyle in the American Southwest' by Richard Melzer

End of show says next week's show is at Pasadena

Corona (listed as 8/05 but I think it is 8/19)

1st song - Long Ago and Far Away

at 2:26 "of the four, two gave all they had to make this day possible"

The mood of the show is subdued with no jokes.

Pasadena (listed as 8/19 but I think it is 8/05)

1st song - Sentimental Journey

At end of show - next week is a special show for returning soldiers.

The mood of the show is light with many jokes.
