Following the University of Texas at Austin's lead, The University of California System will stop using cognitive predictors that fail to predict actual performance of the students as a tool for college admissions. Where UT will stop using an in-house test called GRaduate ADmissions Evaluator or GRADE, UC will stop using the decades old SAT and ACT tests.
University of California (UC) provost Michael Brown brought to a close not only a two-year but a five decade “experiment” into the use of aptitude and achievement testing in the admission process. According to the Public Policy and Higher Education Center at UC Berkeley, in 1960 the university began “a series of experiments” to determine whether “(1) the test improved prediction of freshman grades; (2) it could be used to assess grade inflation; and (3) it could be used to help manage enrollment growth.” After 50 years, the University seems to have concluded that the answer to at least two of those is no.
The University of Texas System after not requiring their prospective students to take the SAT and ACT for admission for 2021 and 2022 due to COVID has decided to extend this policy through at least 2023. Other Universities in Texas that have adopted this policy are Rice University and Texas A&M University. https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2022/04/28/ut-not-requiring-sat-act-scores-fall-2023-applicants-university-texas-admission/9569530002/
