In 2016 Epoch Times published this statement from Michael Huerta, FAA Administrator during the Obama Administration.
“The U.S. commercial aviation community is working together to make sure pilots are able to report, and be treated for, any mental health condition. We must be confident pilots are medically fit when they enter the cockpit.”
In doing so, the FAA has decided not to carry out in-depth psychological screening of pilots due to there being “no convincing evidence” that it would be helpful. FAA Administrator Michael Huerta calls routine testing “neither productive nor cost effective.”
Instead, the FAA’s methods will focus on creating support networks for pilots that encourage them to report and seek support for mental issues.

Michael Huerta, the Federal Aviation Administration's administrator, says psychological tests are ineffective because they reveal a pilot's mental health for only a moment in time without providing insight into whether the pilot will suffer problems later.
Yet the FAA did not eliminate the Cogscreen, and those that voluntarily disclose any mental issues, including marriage counceling have their medicals suspended or revoked. To quote Admiral Akbar, "It's a trap"
This shows the subjectively graded Cogscreen tests have nothing to do with safety and are really about creating a cottage industry that holds pilots hostage for as much money can be squeezed out of them by dangling the hope with no guarantee of getting their medicals back. Far from it, these trapped pilots are subjectively graded as fails in order to keep them in hostage indefinitely. It's time to let the safest pilots have their unrestricted medicals back without any strings attached and to put these mental health quacks cottage industry of holding pilots hostage out of business.
