Dale Hartley MBA, PhD who is a retired professor of business and psychology as well as an industrial-organizational psychologist has published an article coming out against cognitive assessments for employment. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/machiavellians-gulling-the-rubes/201603/would-you-take-psychological-test-apply-job
Dr. Hartley has questions why the cognitive assessments are kept as a black box, including withholding the results from the individual taking the test. Questions the competency of the test administrator. Questions who actually gets to see the results. These are his points.
· Unless I am familiar with the test, how do I know it is valid and reliable? Who is interpreting the test results, and how do I know they are competent to do so?
· Who will get to see the results?
· What are you trying to discover about me through this test that you can’t discover by less intrusive methods?
· How will the test results be used to evaluate my candidacy, and why aren’t you forthcoming about that?
· How will I know what impact (if any) the test results may have had on my candidacy?
· It is coercive, since there is no option for the employee to opt-out of the testing and still remain a candidate.
And my number one objection…
· In the interest of transparency, why won’t you share the test results with me? If my psychological profile is none of my business, then it is certainly none of anyone else’s business.
Dr. Hartley also states that the tests are so intrusive that they violate one's private thoughts and feelings. This adds an extra layer of discrimination since most pilots don't have to go through the Cognitive assessment process through a quack psychologist off the FAA hand selected list.
