Bai (extinct varieties)

Bai (Kesa)

On April 18, 2014 at the Ning'er County bus station in Ning'er, Yunnan, China, a Hani man on bus from Kesa told me that the Bai there do not speak Bai, and have been there for 4 or 5 generations. Their ancestors are from Dali. There are also Hani and Yi, most of whom do not speak the language anymore. He also reported that there are Hani speakers in Xuande 宣德.

Bai (Yangmaochong)

On April 8, 2014 in Huanian, Eshan County, Yunnan, China, Huanian locals told me that ethnic Hani were reported to live in Yangmaochong 羊毛冲. Locals are not aware of any ethnic Bai in the area. The local Yi autonym is Nisu; one Nisu woman’s Hani mother could not speak it anymore, and was reported to be a “3rd or 4th generation Hani.”

Bai (Changtian)

On April 25, 2014, I found out that the Bai language of Changtian 长田, Guodazhai Township, Fengqing County, Yunnan Province, China is now extinct. I talked to a 61-year-old Bai man who could not recall whether his grandparents spoke the language.
