What is the most efficient way of recuperating internal combustion engine exhaust energy?
Introduction
This document explains the main principles, technologies and applications for turbo compounding. Synonyms for the technology are “bottoming cycle” or “exhaust energy recovery”.
The article was created because there is a great deal of confusion with regards to the terminology and many web resources incorrectly consider it a form of “twin turbo” system.
Turbo compounding is the use of a blowdown turbine in the exhaust flow to recover energy which would otherwise be lost to atmosphere. Hence it is not a compressor feeding another compressor (which is called twin-stage or multiple-stage
turbocharging). In the case of Scania, the turbine is supplied by leading manufacturer Holset.
