Pendleton to the west is nearly unreachable as the old interstates over the Wallowas have collapsed with age, leaving the only western route down the Central Oregon highway leading to the ranching hamlet of Burns. The eater town of Coeur d'Alene to the north may as well be on the moon with all of the wilds in between the two communities. Pocatello can be reached to the east, making those settlements Boise’s natural trade partners.
