Boundaries: The only known entrance to Mount Weather is in the Blue Ridge mountains in the region known as Virginia at the southern edge of the Boswash devastation zone. It is not known how extensive the underground complex may be. However it is known that the main entrance can support heavy vehicles, and travelers from the region usually have jerky and fresh produce year round.

The entire region was blasted down to bedrock due to multiple rounds of nuclear strikes in the War. The regions vegetation has yet to recover. Further, in remnant radioactivity acts as a deterrent for visitors.

History:
Mount Weather, Virginia was established by the Old US as a Federal Disaster / continuity of government bunker complex that included Mount Weather, someplace called Site R, and supposedly the old government buildings some 50 miles away by underground train.
It was built when the American Empire was in a conflict for world dominance with another nation called the Soviet Empire (few details remain about who they were). First a little history: The American Empire was established as a breakaway province of the British global Empire. Researches believe it lasted 200 years as a collection of associated Provinces. Then the provinces broke away and formed a Republic. This Republic sated its Imperial urges by expanding across the North American continent. Finally, after a series of European conflicts, it emerged as an Empire, controlled by an oligarchic class that maintained an illusion of Republic by dominating the major political factions.
The US basically controlled half to 2/3’s of the globe sparring with the Eurasian Empire (The Soviet Union) in a series of proxy wars and arms races. After about 50 years the Eurasian Empire collapsed from the strain of the conflict, leaving the US as the Global Hegemon.
This left the US with a problem; it had established a series of industrialization, tributary and occupation (or basing) policies to maintain control of its client states. Bereft of its conflict the Empire drifted maintaining its policies while ignoring the long term economics underlying its policies.
Eventually this led to a global economic collapse akin to one which ended the British Dominion in the Wars of European Dynastic Dissolution in the 20th century. It is not known who fired first. Most scholars agree that the conflagration began on the Indian subcontinent. Soon the globe was engulfed in a massive conflict dominated by “use it or lose it” mass destruction weapons. In short, less of a war and more for a global spasm of death.
In any event, Mount Weather was designed explicitly so that the governing classes of the old American Empire could survive such an event. And as a result it survived multiple Chemical, Nuclear and Biological impacts.
Therefore, it can be said that the legitimate claimants to the old US are those who inhabit the cavern complexes, factories and hydroponic farms under Mount Weather. Sadly for them, no one really gives a damn.
