September 2008 Papoose Article

Thanks to the Papoose for highlighting our club with the August cover page showing our top Lightning skippers, defending Fleet Champion Rich Miner and Perry Anderson flying their spinnakers in heated competition, with the Lake Mohawk boardwalk in the background. We also wish to thank Drew of Danforth’s Lake Mohawk Marina for donating many Sunfish parts that will help keep our club boats in good repair.

July marked the end of the Spring Series for the Lightnings with Rich Miner holding on to his lead, followed by Perry Anderson, Chuck Chute, Don Okner and John Incantalupo in that order. Due to cancellation of racing on July 27^th (the only cancellation for the series) because of storms followed by lack of wind, Hank Jelinek did not get in enough races to qualify for the series in his newly acquired boat, Tabasco. The Snipes sail a combined series so they will race until the end of the season before their results are tallied.

Junior Sailing School ended on July 31, 2008 with 21 young sailors successfully completing the course, 13 Beginners and 8 Advanced. Sean Incantalupo, despite an injury, ably served as our lead instructor, assisted by Calvin Hopkins and Josh Oldridge. Once again, we have been able to introduce some of our youth to the thrill of sailing and to provide them with life long skills. See their smiiling faces on the photos that accompany this article.

On August 8^th, we held the annual Jack Robertson Cruising Day. This is the one, non-racing, sailing event that we hold every year in honor of Jack who retired from active sailing a number of years ago but still comes down to cheer us on and participate in our social events. And don’t forget the remaining events for the year:

September 7: Commodore’s Cup Regatta and Cocktail Party

October 18: Finish Line Party and Annual Meeting

November 23: Awards Brunch

Race Official assignments are posted on the Buoy Room bulletin board. Please be sure to check the list and contact Race Committee Chairman Hank Jelinek if you need to change your dates. Race Official assignments for September are as follows:
