June 2013 Papoose Article

Post date: May 27, 2013 11:54:15 PM

The Prep Signal Party at the Chute home was a great event with good food and camaraderie. It was also an opportunity for us to bid farewell to Ed and Julie Snook as they head off for their new home in Maine, occasioned by a corporate move. We are sorry to loose this fine couple and Sushi will be missing a terrific crew member. But, we are happy that all has worked out well for Ed and Julie including jobs for both, a house bought and a house sold.

Some masts went up before the Cinco de Mayo Party on May 4 and more will be up for racing which starts on May 19. Our first open regatta, the Gabor Cup Regatta will be held on Sunday, June 9. Our regattas are open to all Lake Mohawk Country Club members with sailboats of any kind. This particular event, sponsored by the Lightning Fleet, is named for a former LMYC member, Charles Gabor, the 1938 Snipe Class world champion. Scoring for our regattas is handicapped using the Portsmouth Yardstick. Therefore, a Sunfish can beat a Lightning. So, come down and join us for the racing. Registration is at 12 noon and racing starts at 1 pm. The cost is only $10/boat which includes snacks and soft drinks. Trophies will be awarded.

Following the Gabor Cup Regatta we will celebrate with our Hawaiian Makani Fest. The party will begin at 5 pm and will continue until the last sailor shoves off for home. For a mere $15/person (only $10/child) you will be treated to plenty of food, soft drinks and mixers. BYOB if you wish.

2013 is not only the 75th anniversary of Charles Gabor's Snipe Class world championship. It's also the 75th anniversary of the incorporation of the LMYC and the 75th anniversary of the Lightning class sailboat. So 1938 was an important year for us in many ways. Come down on a Sunday afternoon and talk to us about joining or crewing.

Here are the dates to note for June and the months that follow:

• Gabor Cup Regatta and Makani Party – June 9

• Independence Day Family Party – TBD (to coincide with the LMCC fireworks display)

• Marine Base Regatta – July 7

• Mutiny Regatta – July 27

• Jack Robertson Day – August 10

• Commodore’s Cup Regatta and Party – September 1

Please make note of the announcements in the Papoose for our Junior Sailing School. The sailing school is extremely popular and enrollment is limited. We will be offering adult and individual sailing lessons for those who are interested. And, if you are looking for great gifts for a sailor or for yourself, you can order great shirts and gear with our logo through the club. Also, to help raise funds for the Junior Sailing Program, Haley Chute had bags made from sails. They are available at Cathy Chute's Lake Mohawk Flower Shop in the plaza.

You can visit us on the web at www.lakemohawksailing.org. For more information about membership in the LMYC or, if you want to learn to sail, just call our Vice Commodore, Perry Anderson at (973)729-3904, email us at lakemohawksailing@gmail.com or write to us care of PO Box 29, Sparta, NJ 07871.

Until next month, smooth sailing

and God bless America!
