July 2014 Papoose Article

Although the winter ice really took its toll on our docks, we finally were able to have our first races on June 8. Rich and Gail Miner were our race officials for two races in a moderate breeze out of the Southeast. In the first Lightning race, Perry Anderson and crew Margaret Anderson and Shirley Miller took an early lead but Chuck Chute and crew Haley Chute overtook Perry and led for five legs. But Perry was able to win in a tacking duel on the last leg. In the second Lightning race Perry Anderson won the start and led all the way.

In the Snipe fleet's first race the Mackey brothers, Michael and Christopher, won the start but the team of Constance Gill and Angela Hopkins was able to slide through the Mackey’s lee and lead for most of the race. In the final beat the Mackeys out tacked the Gill boat and won the race. The Mackeys also won the start in the second race. The Gill boat then lifted over the Mackey boat and led for five legs until the Mackeys caught and passed them at the second leeward mark and went on to win again.
