July 2013 Papoose Article

June 3 brought wind to our lake--perhaps a bit too much so that our racers opted for using the opportunity to do some shake down cruising. By the following week were ready for the Gabor Cup Regatta and for our Hawaiian Makani Fest. Three Lightnings competed in the regatta with Rich Miner and crew Gail Miner and Ken Potts taking first place followed by Don Okner and crew Brad Newton second and Chuck Chute with crew Dave Newton taking third. Constance Gill and Angela Hopkins were our race officials. We sailed two triangles and a windward leg for both races, in light to moderate wind out of the southwest. Gail Miner provided some really nice trophies--wooden sailboat/picture frames. The Makani Fest party followed. We sincerely thank the Miners for their hard work in making the party a success.

The LMYC salutes Josh Oldridge, USN upon his graduation from Naval Electronics Technician School and his advancement to Petty Officer 3rd Class. We also extend congratulations to Katharine Miller, daughter of John and Shirley Miller, who graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelors degree in Education and to Ali Brown, niece of Margaret and Perry Anderson, who earned a masters degree, with distinction, in Urban Planning from Harvard University.

We hope that all LMYC members will enjoy all that we have planned this summer and that any LMCC members who may be interested in our club will stop by on a Sunday afternoon to watch us race. And, be prepared to sail--you just may be recruited into crewing. Here are the dates to note for July and the months that follow:

• Independence Day Family Party – to coincide with the LMCC fireworks display

• Marine Base Regatta – July 7

• Mutiny Regatta – July 27

• Jack Robertson Day – August 10

• Commodore’s Cup Regatta and Party – September 1

• Finish Line Party – October 26

• Awards Banquet – December 1

We offer adult and individual sailing lessons for those who are interested. And, if you are looking for great gifts for a sailor or for yourself, you can order shirts and gear with our logo through the club. Also, to help raise funds for the Junior Sailing Program, Haley Chute had bags made from sails. They are available at Cathy Chute's Lake Mohawk Flower Shop in the plaza.

You can visit us on the web at www.lakemohawksailing.org. For more information about membership in the LMYC or, if you want to learn to sail, just call our Vice Commodore, Perry Anderson at (973)729-3904, email us at lakemohawksailing@gmail.com or write to us care of PO Box 29, Sparta, NJ 07871.

Until next month, smooth sailing

and God bless America!

Don Okner
