July 2012 Papoose Article

We start off by welcoming Alex Fox and Birgit Fox as new family members. We also extend a welcome to two more new family members, Gustavo Calle and Belinda Gomez.

Our first races took place on May 27th and will continue every Sunday into October. Despite light air, Perry and Don Okner were able to match race their Lightinings. Perry took two firsts over Don as Rich and Gail Miner served as race officials. Margaret Anderson and Ali Brown, having completed her first year at Harvard grad school, crewed for Perry and 2011 Crew of the Year, Ed Snook, was on board Don's boat.

The following weekend, June 3rd, brought strong winds and three Lightinings sailed with Hank Jelinek and new member Alex Fox running the races. Rich Miner took a first and a second, Perry a second and a first and Don Okner a DNF and a third. Gusts up to 15 knots made for tough sailing during the first race but by the time race two started, the wind settled down. New member Birgit Fox crewed with Ed Snook for Don.

Our Gabor Cup Regatta was scheduled for June 10th but there was little wind so we postponed the event. However, the Makani Party took place as scheduled, and despite a squall at the beginning of the event, things went well and there was a good turnot. After all, Makani is the Hawaiian word for wind!

Our Junior Sailing school starts on July 2nd. There may still be a few openings available. We offer the following levels of instruction:

* Level 1 – Sunfish; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday – 9:30 am to 12:15 pm

* Level 2 – introduction to Snipes; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday – 1:15 pm to 4:00 pm

* Level 3S – Snipe sailing techniques; Wednesday, Friday – 9:30 am to 12:15 pm

* Level 3R – Snipe sailing & racing tactics; Wednesday, Friday – 1:15 pm to 4:00 pm

Tuition is $400.00 for the 3 day per week sessions and $275.00 for the 2 day per week sessions. If you are interested in enrolling your child/children in the 2012 program, please call Jan Oldridge at 973-729-3105 or email at lmycjsp@gmail.com.
