January 2021 Papoose Article

The Lake Mohawk Yacht Club was able to have a very good season, while taking into consideration the social distancing requirements. The Club held its Gabor Cup Regatta on July 12, as written up in the August Papoose and its Commodore’s Cup Regatta, on September 27, as reported in the November Papoose.

While the Lightning Fleet was not able to hold as many races as it normally does, in the Spring Series the Karl and Susan Hauck Lightning came in second, and the Rich and Gail Miner Lightning came first. In the Fall Series the Joe and Joe Fleming Lightning came in second, and the Miner Lightning came in first. Rich Miner was Lightning Fleet Champion and Joe Fleming was Runner-Up. The Snipes, which sail a combined series, were also very active with Tim Mackey or Chris Mackey usually in the lead.

The Yacht Club was able to welcome five new family memberships and a new junior member. See the November Papoose for details. Much of the credit for all of the new members goes to Gail Miner the Membership Chair and to Perry Anderson for doing an excellent job coordinating both junior and adult sailing lessons, while observing social distancing. In addition, there was plenty of day sailing by all ages and classes of sailboats, including our two cruising sailboats.

The Club finished 2020 with a “virtual” annual meeting held via Zoom on Dec. 13, 2020. This was quite a change from the past when our last event was a brunch, a cocktail party or even a dance. With any luck, 2021 will be a better year for all of us.

Sailing is a great sport for girls, boys, women and men of almost any age. The Club has access to a fine lake so join us and give it a try. You can learn to race or just cruise and, we offer social events. Our history includes a member named Charles Gabor who was a world champion Snipe sailor and our Lightning Fleet is number 25, making it one of the oldest in the world.

The LMYC is open to any LMCC member who is interested in sailing. Therefore, plan to join us. For more information, you can visit us on the web at www.lakemohawksailing.org . Also, you can email us at lakemohawksailing@gmail.com, or write us in care of PO Box 29, Sparta, NJ.

Finally, thanks go to Rich Miner for his contributions to this article. Thanks also go to Ian Oldridge for his photography and for upgrading and maintaining our web-site.

Until next month, smooth sailing and God bless America!
