February 2014 Papoose Article

We kicked off 2014 with our Annual Awards Party on January 11 at the home of Rich and Gail Miner. Awards, both serious and humorous, were presented while we dined, drank and shared sailing stories. Once again, we were reminded of how great it to be involved in a sport that can last a lifetime and serve to bring together really fine people. Thanks go to Rich and Gail for once again hosting the event.

If you don't sail, it's never too late to learn. Some of our members started as children and others, as adults. Many years ago, a young boy bought a used Sunfish from one of our club members. The boy learned to sail the Sunfish and also began crewing on a Lightning. He inspired his non-sailing dad to give it a try and his entire family, including his mother and brother got on board with the sport. The young boy grew to adulthood, married a young woman who sails and they are eager to teach their children (my grandchildren) to sail. We welcome all LMCC members and their children to join our club and we provide the following information which will be of interest.

Learn to Sail this Summer, and join the Lake Mohawk Yacht Club's Summer Youth Sailing Program: June 30th to August 1st: Sailing Level 1 & 2: Mon., Tues., and Thurs., (am and pm classes - Tuition $375), Sailing Level 3: Wed., and Fri., (am class - Tuition $250). Students age 10 and above - LMCC members only! Limited space - call early to register: Jan Oldridge: 973 729 3105 or email lmycjsp@gmail.com. ( More information and Registration Documents can be found on the LMYC web site at www.lakemohawksailing.org).

We also offer adult and individual sailing lessons for those who are interested. And, if you are looking for great gifts for a sailor or for yourself, you can order shirts and gear with our logo through the club. Also, to help raise funds for the Junior Sailing Program, Haley Chute has some really nice bags made from sails. They are available at Cathy Chute's Lake Mohawk Flower Shop in the plaza.

You can visit us on the web at www.lakemohawksailing.org. For more information about membership in the LMYC or, if you want to learn to sail, just call our Vice Commodore, Perry Anderson at (973)729-3904, email us at lakemohawksailing@gmail.com or write to us care of PO Box 29, Sparta, NJ 07871.

Until next month, smooth sailing

and God Bless America,

Don Okner
