August 2015 Papoose Article

The Gabor Cup Regatta on June 7 brought seven boats to the line including three Lightnings, three Snipes and one O'pen Bic. It was a picture perfect day on Lake Mohawk with a 5 mph wind and gusts up to 12 mph that allowed for two races with John Miller as our race official. The Lightnings completed both races with Rich Miner winning the regatta followed by Perry Anderson second. Haley Chute took third place in a Snipe, edging out Peter Breiling in a Lightning. The other Snipes, skippered by,John Marx Howard Gooblar sailed the first race but Howard went over and was a DNF. Mark Marussich sailed an O'pen Bic in race one but also capsized and was a DNF. Following the races, we celebrated with our Makani Party. Many got into the spirit with Hawaiian shirts and leis. Rich Miner manned the grill and cooked up some terrific chicken and others brought food of all types.

Racing was canceled on June 14 due to lack of wind. But on June 21 sailing resumed with three Lightnings competing in two races run by Mark Marussich and daughter Catherine. The first race was a triangle course with the prevailing wind out of the north and was won by Rich Miner. Perry Anderson was second and, despite a good start, Don Okner came in third. The wind shifted to west south west for the second race, an Olympic, and Perry Anderson led the way taking first place followed by Rich Miner second and Don Okner third. Rain followed by no wind forced another cancellation on June 28.

On July 4 we held our annual Independence Day party and July 5 was the day for the Marine Base Regatta. More about those events in next month's Papoose. We also welcome as new members Jody Lepore, crewing for Don Okner, Ian and Esther Weintraub sailing in our Sunfish Fleet and junior member Joshua Bajramoska, also sailing a Sunfish..
