William died on 12 Mar 1883 at the age of 71 in Liberty, Bedford, Virginia, United States. Obituary: Bedford Sentinel - page 3 on 16 Mar 1883 in Bedford, Virginia, United States. Mr. Wm. M Johnston, father of Mr. Jno. W. Johnston of this town died Monday evening. His funeral was preached by Rev. Wm. McGhee at the Methodist church of which Mr. Johnston has long been a member. His remains were carried to Roanoke for interment. He was 71 years of age.

Obituary: Bedford Star on 16 Mar 1883 in Bedford, Virginia, United States. Death of a Good Man.

William N. Johnston, father of our townsman Jno. W. Johnston, Esq. after a painful illness of two weeks quietly breathed his last at the residence of his son on Monday evening last, aged 71 years.

The scene at this bed of death was most affecting and touching one; children and grand-children were there, gathered to catch the last words of him they loved so well before he entered the Spirit land. Death had no terrors for him. He was ready for the summons. Like Paul, he had fought a good fight and kept the faith and was conscious of the fact that there was a crown of life for him, which would be bestowed by the righteous Judge in that day. His last moments were employed in exhorting those who were nearest and dearest to him to be faithful to the end, to do good. But the scriptures tell us there is none perfect, "no not one."

The devotion of Mrs. Jno. W. Johnston to her father was beautifully touching. For two days and nights she sat stately at the bedside of the sufferer refusing to leave him until death took him and released him from his suffering.

The funereal services took place from the Methodist church Tuesday evening at half past 1 o'clock. Rev. Wm McGee officiating. Mr. McGee paid a brief but just tribute to the deceased member of his charge and exhorted his congregation to prepare for that period which would come sooner or later to one and all the prol when we should be borne by others as was the deceased brother into the church where the sad rites of Christian burial would be performed over our lifeless forms.

The remains were carried on cars to Roanoke for interment accompanied by the members of the family, Rev. Wm McGee, and Messrs I. N. Clark and D. M Newsome.

The grief stricken family, one and all have our warmest sympathies in their sad affliction.

He was buried in Mar 1883 at Roanoke City Cemetery in Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia, United States.

Obituary: Bulletin - page 1 on 25 Nov 1915 in Bedford, Virginia, United States. Mr. John W. Johnston

Following an illness of several months, Mr. John W. Johnston died Wednesday morning at his home on North street, aged about 75 years. Mr. Johnston was born in Campbell county, but when a young boy, his parents moved to Roanoke and located near where the city of Roanoke now stands, where he spent his youth and young manhood. About thirty-five years ago he came to Bedford and locaed, and has since made his home at this place.

Upon coming to Bedford he engaged in the leaf tobacco business, the tobacco he bought going mainly to the Austrian Government. He continued in active management of the concern up to about two years ago when ill health and advancing age forced him to retire and turn over his affairs to his youngest son, Mr. Samuel Johnston, who has since managed the business.

During his residence here Mr. Johnston, by reason of the nature of his business, became known to a large number of people in the county, among which class of our population he numbered his friends by the hundreds, and when he retired from active life his absence from the floor of the warehouses each morning during the selling season created a vacancy that the planters often commented on.

Mr. Johnston was a member of the Methodist church for nearly half a century, and was a Christian gentleman of the highest type. He was the very soul of honor in every relation of life and lived true to the highest ideals of Christian manhood and his death is a distinct loss to his town and country.

When the call to arms was sounded in '61 Mr. Johnston volunteered his services to his native State gong to the front from the county of Roanoke. He served throughout the four years of the war with credit to himself and State, and when the struggle ended, without bitterness or hatred he went to work to retrieve the fortunes of himself and country.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucy Johnston, and the following children: Joseph E. Johnston and J. W. Johnston Jr. of Lynchburg; Samuel A. Johnston, of Bedford: Mrs. Charles W. Byrd, of Parksley, Va.; Mrs Frank Richeson of Richmond, and Misses Lucy and Gwendoline Johnston of Bedford.

The funeral service will be held at the Methodist church at 12:30 o'clock Friday, and the body will be taken to Roanoke where interment will be in the city cemetery.

He was buried on 26 Nov 1915 at Roanoke City Cemetery in Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Obituary: page ? after 26 Nov 1915 in Bedford, Virginia, United States. Burial in Roanoke
