John D Johnson

1. John D Johnson (the son of) was born on 22 Feb 1780 in Bedford, Virginia, United States.

According to Lorrand Johnson he was the son of James "Seneca" Johnson. Y-DNA tests do not disprove it.

He was living in 1805 in Highland, Ohio, United States. John Johnson and Susanna, his wife, emigrated from Campbell County, Va., to Highland County, Ohio, in 1805.

In 1806, he moved with his family to the farm now owned by Silas Mathis. He spent the first winter in a camp. Mr. Johnson was a noted hunter, and for years supplied his family with meat with his gun. The first election in this township was held at Mr. Johnson's house. They raised a family of twelve children. Four of them were still living Ann Scott, James, Polly Johnson (widow of J. M. Johnson) and Susan Bodkin at the time of publication of LIBERTY TOWNSHIP. - HISTORY OF CLINTON COUNTY. - LIBERTY TOWNSHIP. - BY HON. JESSE N. OREN. p 733

He was living in Mar 1810. March of 1810 when John paid $190 for 114 acres of land on Anderson's fork of Caesar's Creek in Liberty Twp, Clinton Co OH. The purchase was made from Nathaniel Pope, an early Highland Co. settler who had bought 1000 acres of land from William Lupton and James Johnson, possibly a relative of John.

John was living in 1811 in Clinton, Ohio, United States. In the Spring of 1811 they moved to the wilderness of Clinton Co. The first year they lived in a shelter made of poles which was open on one side. A constant log fire provided a means of cooking as well as warmth and was also a deterrent to wolves and bears during the night. A log cabin was soon erected and they raised a total of 11 children there, losing one daughter as an infant. A history of Clinton Co. states that John was a noted hunter and supplied meat for his family with his gun. The first election in the township was held at their home.

He was living in 1830. In about 1830, John and Susannah built a one-story brick house where they spent the rest of their lives. Their children were leaving home about this time and eventually provided them with 68 grandchildren. All of their children joined the Methodist church during a revival at Port William and one of their sons became a minister of that denomination in Iowa.

He appeared in the census in 1840 in Liberty, Clinton, Ohio, United States. p9

He appeared in the census in 1850 in Liberty, Clinton, Ohio, United States living with his daughter Ann Scott, his real estate was valued at $3300.

He sold his farm to son-in-law James Johnson in Sep 1851 in Clinton, Ohio, United States. in September of 1851 he sold his farm for $3000 to his son-in-law James M. Johnson, husband of daughter Polly.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sleeper Wall married Moses B. Johnson on 10 Jan 1863. Moses and Lizzie moved to McLean County IL ca 1864. They adhered strictly to the rules and disciplines of the Quaker movement. From son Ireatus, "On Saturdays my mother and sisters prepared meals to be eaten on Sunday. No cooking, dishwashing, bedmaking was ever done on the Sabbath. My father and the help did the chores on Saturday. Horses and mules were given enough fodder for two days. Our Sundays were a day of silence, no laughing, joking or excessive talking. After an early rising followed by a cold breakfast, we sat silently around the table while father read aloud from his Bible. We children sat quietly, exercising great control for we feared the wrathy punishment that was sure to be administered when, in moments of pent up energy, we sometimes forgot what the day was. We walked to the meeting house, mother in a flowing black dress and bonnet. Father, in a black suit and hat, led the way. After a cold lunch the young ones were given liberty to sit on the front porch. Running, playing games, laughing were strictly forbidden, for we were supposed to be meditating, and for the whole tortuous Sunday afternoon, that is what we did."

From "A Genealogy_The Johnson Clan: Also: Hall, Moorman, Wall and Whitehorn" by Garner J Phillips, Springfield Missouri 1977

Iretus Crum named for his father's business partner. Known as 'Reat' to his wife, I.C. to friends but "Pop" to his children and grandchildren. Attended school to 5th grade, started at age 12 to work as a 'live-in' chore boy for farming neighbors. Worked as a mason and plasterer Kossuth Co, IA. One 4th of July he spotted a beautiful girl riding a solid black horse leading the parade. He managed an introduction at the evening's open air dance. On Thanksgiving day, the couple drove 11 miles to Algona, IA to get their marriage license. It was 22 below zero, but a good horse and sleigh, a heavy robe and their new love kept them warm. They often told of riding horses 15 miles in later years, each parent holding a young boy in the saddle, to attend a dance. They became staunch republicans and Baptists, decided dancing was sinful and eventually gave it up for religious belief. They move in 1897 to Willow Springs MO where they purchased 167 acres, began to farm and operate a slaughter house. Included in the group who migrated to MO were their two small sons, I.C's brother Alonzo & wife Ada (Lena's sister), his mother-in-law Kate Whitehorn Cole & husband Charles, and his grand-mother-in-law Bolina Whitehorn (Grannie). In 1901 they all migrated to Oklahoma City, a town of 15,000. Its 135 saloons were an abhorrence to the tee-totalers. After a brief return to MO the family loaded all of their cattle, wagons and household goods into two migrant railroad cars and on Apr 8, 1910 settled finally in the newly established town on the plains in eastern NM, "The Magic City of Clovis." There they were involved in the furniture and undertaking business until retirement.

In those early days of the west, wild burros could be purchased for 75 cents unbroken, straight from the sand hills. The town marshall sported a long mustache, wore a 10 gallon hat and polished boots. He patrolled the flat, dirt streets riding his handsome gray horse. Reservoirs were used to store water to fight fires and cab horses often sank in the new sewer ditches after infrequent rains.

IC had an adventurous and pioneering bent. He and two friends made the second overland drive to Albuquerque NM in a Jackson car in 1913. Traveling over dirt wagon roads and cow paths with only a compass and a vague idea that their destination was somewhere west, they carried all supplies with them. This included water, food, clothing, bedding, spare tire casings and inter-tubes, motor oil, puncture repair material, 2 pumps (in case one wore out). Rain, mud, forded creeks, side curtains to be put on and off, wrong turns and directions, narrow wood single track bridges, cattle and horses in the way, donkeys that failed to heed the honk, honk of the brass and rubber horn, mud chains on slick roads, even villages where no one spoke English, did not deter the men from reaching their destination. Leaving Clovis at 4 a.m. on Monday, they arrive Albuquerque Thursday 3p.m., a distance of some 250 miles. I.C. served as city commissioner, Clovis. Named after father's business partner in Bloomington, IL

They had Kit # 356103

Kit # 356103 - The descendant of John D's son James Barton had a 67 marker test and matched the group norm except for DYS570 with a 19 vs the groups 18 andDYS464c which was a 16 vs the groups 17 (This is a relatively fast mutating marker).

There are two others in the Olive group with this result who claim descent from the John who married Elizabeth Ellyson. The difference could be just a random mutation or the three might be more closely related. Other male descendants of John D thru his son Garland have been located and might agree to a test. This would help to see if it was random or not.
