Johnston
There are silver spoons that have been handed down from the William Morrison Johnson family with the Johnson family flying spur crest engraved on them.
There is also a rubbing showing Major James Johnston 1779 with a similar crest engraving.
Was the silverware a gift for their wedding? Since James' sons Zachariah (8 Feb 1786 VA - 16 Sep 1848 OH) and John had both gone to Ohio the silverware would probably have been handed down or just kept by the local branch of the family.
New research shows that the spoons were manufactured after 1840 and were probably purchased by William M. Johnson.
DNA Tests
Garland had a brother the Rev. James Barton Johnson. A direct descendant of his has been tested and the preliminary results have him closely related to the descendant of William Morrison Johnson. See the Olive Group web page for further discussions on the Y-DNA tests

NEWS - The Probable parents of "our" James Johnson are James (Seneca) Johnson and Mildred Moorman (daughter of Zachariah) who were married on 1 Sept 1779 in Bedford, VA
Discussion of James Seneca Johnson vs James "GOV" Johnson
5/16/18 An at-DNA match with a descendant of Millie's sister Rachel Moorman who married Benjamin Butterworth makes Zachariah Moorman and Elizabeth Terrell the most common ancestors and strongly suggest that this James and Millie are the parents of my line.
Correspondence between my grandmother Viola Johnston and her 2nd cousin (Sally Campbell Byrd) in Virginia originally tied together the families of William M. and Henry M. but there was no proof.
May 2018 "at-DNA" tests from descendants of Henry, William, and their supposed sisters Permilia & Mary are all showing up as 4th cousins. This confirms that they were all probably siblings.
James M is closely tied to them by research. He was a surety for Mary's second wedding. He purchased many items at the Fosdick auction, and his son is buried on Mary's property.

Last Name Changed
The family name was originally Johnson.
Most of the Virginia line changed it to Johnston after 1850.
In Illinois, my great-grandfather Granville added the "T" around 1910 (my Johnson Family).
Johnston is only shown for those born after the name was changed.
Finding Where We Connect to a Johnson Family Tree
Henry Moorman Johnson worked for Garland Johnson in Port William, Clinton, Ohio. The family story was that Garland was an uncle, but that is impossible. More likely is that James was a brother of Garland's father John D. (born 22 Sept 1780 - d 19 Aug 1857 OH) the son of the James Johnson that married Millie Moorman on 1 Sept 1779 in Campbell Co, VA. There are only two children listed for James & Mille in Lorand Johnson's book, unlikely at that time.
My Henry Moorman Johnson was supposedly named after Millie's brother Henry Moorman. In the 1840 Census William Morrison Johnson and James M Johnson were living in southern Campbell Co, between two of Henry Moorman's sons, Drury & Zachariah.
