OBJECTIVE
This drill is designed to introduce the techniques the quarterback as a passer needs to master.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Follow points identified in the setup below.
QUARTERBACK STATION PASSING #2 SETUP
Divide players into 3 groups, each with a coach.
(All players may not be skilled enough to master this technique but try to provide them all with the basic instructions)
The grip —Grip ball with the index finger an inch or so from the point of the football. Avoid gripping with too much hand on the laces. Smaller hands move closer to the point. Ensure an air gap between the ball and the palm of the hand.
The drop back — Use a 3-step drop. Keep two hands on the ball when setting up. Keep the ball at numeral height during the initial drop back. Use short cross over steps. During drop back, move ball closer to the ear while still keeping both hands on.
Setup Position — After the third crossover step, plant the back foot and position both arms up in a “goal post” like position. In this position, the ball should be up at ear height in the throwing hand and the non-throwing arm should be up and out. The shoulders should be pointed in the direction of the pass, i.e. towards the intended receiver. Players should repeat the drop back and setup position many times before ever throwing the football to instill good habits.
The Throwing motion--Throw from over the top—not sidearm. When passing, turn wrist on follow through so thumb points down (pronate)
Run drills practicing just the drop back and setup without a throw.
Run drills practicing the drop back, the setup and the throw.
Chose the more skilled passers for a live passing drill using receivers. Have receivers run routes as practiced in the receivers drill.
