Receiver Station 1 OBJECTIVE
This drill is designed to give receivers different drill opportunities to practice skills.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Stress catching the ball out in front of the body with both hands. Receivers should catch the ball and tuck it away every time. They should make a habit of watching the ball at the catch as well as watching it until it is tucked away.
The foot nearest the ball (the inside foot) should be forward The hands should be out in front and the elbows at the side and bent. The first step should be a power step with the back foot--pushing off hard with the front foot. Check to see that receivers do not take a backward step first.
SETUP
Goal Post Drill
Line players up behind the goal post and throw the balls. Receivers must catch ball with hands in front of the goal post. This teaches them to catch the ball in front of their body.
Turn and Catch Drill
Set up a line of receivers. Each player in turn takes a position facing away from the passer (coach) and about five yards away. On the GO command the passer throws a pass and the receiver must turn around and find the ball, catch it properly and tuck it away, watching it all the way through the catch and the tuck.
Wide Receiver and Passing Drills
Two Wide Receivers run simultaneous routes against the two Defensive Backs. Coach calls a specific route for each receiver including a buttonhook, a down 5 yards and in, a down 5 yards and out or a slant in or slant out. QB throws to the open receiver.
In division 1 and 2 the coach starts out as the QB until the players understand the drill.
Make sure receivers start in an upright stance with one foot slightly ahead of the other and hands at the side with elbows bent. Receivers should take a quick first step with their back foot. Run in and out patterns “square” and not longer than 5 yards.
Set up multiple groups and rotate players as wide receivers and defensive backs. Use the best passers as the quarterback.
To make it more exciting, award points to players for a reception (WR), a completed pass (QB) and pass interception (DB). At the end of the drill match up the two wide receivers with the most points against the two defensive backs with the most points using the QB with the most points as passer.
Receiver Concentration Drill
Have three players holding hand shields lineup 10 yards deep and 3 yards apart from each other in and equilateral triangle. Have a receiver run a pattern into the middle of the triangle. As the receiver enters the triangle the coach or quarterback should throw the receiver a high pass. The receiver must jump up to catch the pass, when his hands touch the ball, the three defenders should jam the receiver with their shields.
