OBJECTIVE
This drill is designed to teach the player a proper 3-point stance
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Flat back
Head up
Hands out in front
Heels slightly off the ground
Balanced position. Not too much weight on the down hand.
SETUP
Have players line up in several groups on a yard line spaced two yards apart . Start in the Breakdown position, feet shoulder width apart. Then have the linemen squat down and reach out into a 4-point stance. Check the stance for a straight back, a good base and the head up. Heels should be slightly up off the ground. Then have the linemen take one hand up and place the free arm across their leg in a relaxed manner. Make sure the fundamental position is maintained after transitioning to the three-point stance. Check for stability by gently pushing or pulling the player slightly in different directions. Once all linemen in a group have a perfect stance have them explode out. After repeating this drill successfully for five times, have the players go from the breakdown position into the 3-point stance without first going into the 4-point stance. Those who can get set in a proper 3-point stance "graduate" from this class and move on to the next drill. Others continue to work on the 4-point to 3-point transition.
