Offensive Lineman Station 2

OBJECTIVE

This drill is designed to teach the players on the offensive linemen additional blocking techniques.

POINTS OF EMPHASIS

SETUP

Down Block on an Offset Defender

Utilize the initial move but make the first power step in the direction of the offset defender. Stress putting the blocker’s             head on the play side of the defender. Coach can demonstrate the use of the “chicken wing” to aid in the block. Stress “Low Man Wins”

Cross Block

Use two offensive linemen and two defenders aligned as follows

 D         D

O          O

The blocker on the right will block the defender to his left and will fire out first taking a power step in that direction. The second blocker follows immediately behind the first blocker to block the defender on the right. Check proper power steps by each blocker and that the blocker on the right goes first. Check that the second blocker does not take a backward step.

Bird Dog and Pull Drill-- Set up a line of five players as blockers.

Bird Dog Right--The blocker’s  first move is to rip his right arm back and take a very short pivot step with his right foot.. The next move is a short quick step with the left foot to a position slightly in front of the right foot.

Bird Dog Left —Repeat except the first move is to rip the left arm back and pivot on the left foot. Then step with the right foot.

Bird Dog and Pull—repeat the above moves and then roll to the right (or left) to create a wall/line of blockers to the right (or left) side

Pass Blocking

Initial move is a short jab step to the outside and slightly back. Practice both to the left and the right several reps.  From this position proceed to the Step-Slide Drill below.

Step-Slide Drill—Set up a lie of five players as pass blockers and have them execute a step, slide, step, slide move, first to the right and then to the left. Repeat this several times then have the blockers step-slide to form a pocket.

Mirror Drill and Pop

Set up 2 cones about 3 yards apart and line up two players  facing each other about 3 yards apart—one is a pass blocker, the other a rusher. The rusher will feint left or right multiple times staying within the cones and the blocker must mirror the rusher’s moves. After several reps have the rusher mix in a forward move in addition to the left/right moves. Check that the blocker does not lunge forward to meet the rusher. He should stay in his protect position and contact (pop!) the rusher with extended arms if the rusher tries to penetrate. Repeat this several times then have the rusher move down the line to left and make a forward penetration as he moves left. The blocker must slide-step to stay in front of the rusher and pop him when the rusher makes a penetration move.
